We drink Organic Valley. If we run out before I go to the market we'll get Horizons from Target or Publix.

I used to do Organic Valley but it is $5 for a half gallon around here and I just found out that Whole Foods organic whole milk is 3.79 so I get that instead.

We get the least expensive organic brand that is available wherever we are shopping. And I usually stick to the gallon size since those tend to be pasteurized (vs. ultrapasteurized).
ETA: I also buy non-organic whole milk sometimes too.
honeydew / 7444 posts
I find that Horizons milk tastes pretty bad, but i'm not sure if it's because it's ultrapasteurized.

Do you have access to Clover milk? I wish we had Clover in Canada.

I drink Organic Valley if I'm not going to drink much, but try to get Natural by Nature if there's a chance I might drink most of a gallon because it's not ultrapasturized. I wish my WF carried the smaller cartons!

I asked our pediatrician about organic whole milk or regular when we transitioned. He didn't seem to think it was a big deal to do organic or not. We just buy regular milk.

We all drink Horizons organic. We drink 1% though.... Whole for the little man - he loves it! We do too.

I get store brand organic. Its so much better than regular milk. No hormones or antibiotics and the cows are free range dairy cows who eat grass and hay as opposed to feed

We don't do much organic stuff in our house - LO gets regular store-brand whole milk.

We get whichever organic is cheapest that week. Usually Horizon, sometimes 365 (Whole Foods brand).
pomegranate / 3503 posts
organic valley or whole foods. The whole foods brand is usually cheapest, I find.

We get Horizon Organic with DHA added because it's the vegetarian DHA...but I am going to look into Organic valley.

This dairy survey is interesting and enlightening if you care about making sure that your organic milk is genuinely organic!

Interesting to note that Horizon is at the bottom of the list!

Whatever organic is cheapest at the grocery store that week, usually horizon.

@cascademom: I was wondering what the difference is and is it really needed?
We buy Organic cause it lasts longer and DH and I only use for cooking or cereal, but I would think it would much cheaper to buy just a gallon for R when the time comes.

We don't buy organic milk but we get milk delivery from a local dairy farm. It is from cow to our table in 1-2 days and there are no hormones used so while it's a little more expensive, we think it's worth it. We started out doing organic milk but it freaked me out that the milk would be good for weeks or even months at a time. That just seems like too much processing to me. I could be uninformed about that, but I just couldn't get my arms around it.

We try to stay away from whole cow's milk due to reports of contaminants still getting in the milk (even in organic brands). I most especially try to stay away from Horizon, actually.
That cornucopia link someone posted up above was helpful in my research in the past. When we do buy cow's milk, it's from Organic Valley or a local farm with high ratings.
I don't mean to sound alarming or elitist... I just read up on it in the past and just decided to diversify our diet a bit more and limit our intake with cow's milk. It made me sad because I love milk and was raised to drink it regularly. We still buy it on occasion though, but also get a majority of our calcium/Vit D/protein needs through other foods and milks.

Whichever brand of organic, whole, DHA Omega 3 that happens to be on sale that day.

We get the Costco brand whole milk, which comes in a three-pack of half gallons.
Costco doesn't carry a lot of organic whole milk, so when they are out, we just buy Horizon from the grocery store.

@plantains: yikes!! We are moving close to a farm soon and I think I may start buying milk there!
@hilsy85: oh no! He's not liking it?!

I don't remember where I heard this, but supposedly organic milk is ultra-pasteurized, so a lot of the good stuff is killed off. We usually have our milk delivered by a local farm. It's hormone- and antibiotic-free but not organic.

DH likes Organic Valley milk, but we try to buy it at Whole Foods because the other markets only carry the ultra-pasteurized version (ultra has the white plastic spout built into the carton, regular old pasteurized has the old-school fold-out spout). I'm just as happy to buy the Whole Foods 365 brand, since it's cheaper, but apparently he can taste the difference. We've tried milk in glass bottles from local diaries but unfortunately neither of us cared for it much.

We usually get our milk straight from the farm. We use to get out milk raw from a small local farm I was working at doing the milking and some other things. They, unfortunately, had to downsize, so we get our milk from another farm, but not raw. When we buy store milk, we get Natural by Nature milk.

Promised Land is the only brand of whole milk that DS doesn't throw up! It is so weird.

What's the difference nutrition-wise between pasteurized and ultra-pasteurized? We usually get the store brand's organic milk but i know it's ultra-pasteurized.
honeydew / 7917 posts
I like the organic milk from Trader Joe's since it is pasteurized instead of ultra. I also like Natural by Nature, which is local for me. Their bottled organic whole milk is delicious!
apricot / 319 posts
@yin: Natural by Nature is the only milk I'll drink other than straight from the farm milk. The other store organic milks just taste weird to me. :\
pomegranate / 3225 posts
good luck, everytime I try to give L organic whole milk she throws it on the floor! I'm scared!!!
grapefruit / 4554 posts
We usually buy whatever's on sale for organic, and it's usually the one in the red bottle with the cow on it

@betsyboop: I'm wondering this too.
LO won't touch organic whole. Not sure if it's the organic or whole part. She will drink some of my regular skim. I don't like the taste of organic milk tbh. And there are some brands that are non organic and don't use antibiotics or hormones.
grapefruit / 4049 posts
@sorrycharlie: @betsyboop: I believe ultra-pasteurized kills off more of the nutrients naturally found in milk. Food companies will then add the nutrients back, in synthetic form.
pomegranate / 3113 posts
To add to what @SAHM0811: said, it's not just vitamins that are affected (milk companies claim the loss in nutrients is minimal, but I personally don't quite believe it). Regular pasteurization heats milk to a lower temperature for a longer time to kill off bacteria; ultra-pasteurization heats it for a very short time but to a very high temperature. The higher temps denature some of the proteins in the milk, so companies end up adding things like carrageenan into the milk or cream to make up for the loss in texture. If you're buying UP milk and care about that, make sure to check the labels carefully. The other problem with UP milk comes if you're trying to do things other than drinking and basic cooking -- it won't work well for yogurt, cheese, or anything that relies on the protein structure of the milk remaining intact.
As an aside, ultra-pasteurization is a slightly different process than the one used to make UHT (shelf-stable) milk, which doesn't have to be refrigerated. It's easy to mix them up, but UP milk will go bad if left out of the fridge.
