If you had an RCS, how long were you in the hospital for? I have an RCS on the 26th, but I am hoping and praying that I go into labor on my own and have a successful VBAC before that. If I make it to the pre-op appt on the 23rd, I am going to ask if I can be discharged after 2 nights (if all goes well with me and baby, of course). I wasn't sure how realistic this was.

I had a RCS (breech baby) and stayed for 3 nights. I needed a blood transfusion after my c-section and they didn't ID it until my blood work on day 2, so I don't know if they would have let me. I do know people how have left after day 2, though! Fingers crossed for the VBAC or a short-stay RCS.

@ocean81: My first c-section I was only in the hospital 2 nights.. That's pretty standard here in ontario barring any complications... did you have to stay longer last time?

I only stayed two nights for my first unplanned c-section, which took place at 9:00 in the evening. I wanted to go and didn't have any complications, so there was no real reason to stay. I'm in the U.S.

I've had 3 c-sections (most recent was last week) and I've been released after 2 nights each time. My RCS was last Thursday at 8am and we were discharged Saturday at 12:30pm.

With my first I was there for one night - arrived at 6am Tuesday, left at 6pm Wednesday. With my second I had to stay a second night, but that was because I had internal bleeding and had to get a transfusion and have my hemoglobin levels come back up.
@ocean81: I was right there with you, just wanting to get home to my toddler. In fact I basically had a tantrum, told them I was leaving either way, and got them to run bloodwork at 6am and 2pm in order to get out of there after two nights, because they were talking about keeping me for one more.

I was only in for two nights with my RCS. My OB was aware of my desire to go home quickly and she was very supportive of doing whatever it took in the hospital to make that happen.

My wasn't scheduled but I was in the hospital for two nights with my c section. Plus the during the night I was in labour (baby was out justbebfote 5 am). So total nights in hospital 3, but 2 after surgery and we left in the morning after the second night. I couldn't wait to get home and contemplated leaving after one night. I think I had the option to stay 4.

With #1, I was in 3 nights, and with #2, I was in 2 nights.

I stayed for 3 nights with both of my c-sections. With my first I needed a blood transfusion late on the second day post-op.
With my second, I could have gone home after 2 nights, but my baby was in the NICU and I wanted to stay in hopes that he would get to go home the next day with me (which he did!!).

I had an RCS on a Sunday, I was discharged by lunch time on Tuesday. It was great.

Two nights is standard in my area for c/s's.

I had my planned c section at 11:30pm on Tuesday (I kept getting bumped for emergencies!) and was discharged Thursday afternoon.
Even for my unplanned c section I had had to stay two nights. Both times I was offered the option to go home or stay another night.

I only stayed 36 hours post birth for my unexpected c-section. I had such a miserable night (uncomfortable, noisy, no room for DH, baby up all night), that I started asking that morning when I could leave. They were so crowded there, they let me out 12 hours early with instructions to take it easy and had the public health nurse come visit my house the next day. It was really fine, but I was told I recovered incredibly fast. I think it was sheer willpower so I could get out of the hospital.

@Grace: In Ontario, one night is standard if you have a midwife, that's how I got out so quickly as well. I had the same experience with it being uncomfortable and noisy - people kept saying "don't you want to stay longer and get some rest before you go home with the baby?" but what rest? Beeping and lights and people coming into the room all night, sleeping in an uncomfortable hospital bed? No thank you.

Baby born at 8am Friday and I went home around noon on Sunday. Standard here (ontario) is 2 nights for a c section.

#1 I was there 4 nights (daughter was in NICU so my doc signed off on another night to have us close) #2 was 3 nights, I had my RCS at 2:00 on Friday and we went home on Monday after lunch, I tried to go home Sunday but my doctor wanted me there for 72 hours) We had our toddler with us almost all day on Sunday at the hospital though, so she got to be around us and we went for a walk together and stuff.

Mine was not a repeat c-section, but I had an emergency c section with my daughter and was discharged after two nights. I was only discharged early though because my DD was transferred to the NICU at a children's hospital, and had she been able to stay with me, I probably would have stayed longer because I felt pretty rough. I would recommend if you get discharged early, send someone to fill your RX for pain meds prior to you leaving, so you have them ready at home. I was discharged on New Year's Day and had to drive around with my mom looking for an open pharmacy, which was miserable.

@Grace: No, you're right, midwives can't do c sections. How it works with a midwife is they're in the OR with an OB, standing by (actually, my midwives were doing some training program with the hospital where they were actually assisting, but there was still an OB) and once the baby is born, they're in the care of the midwife, while the mom is the patient of the OB. So the midwife still does the follow-up visits at home, which is why you get let out early.

I had the same as @erinbaderin with my midwives. Also in Ontario. My midwife could actually be the second person partnering with the ob for the c section if they needed her to because she has special training. She wasn't, but that was kind of cool. If I have a scheduled one this time then they'll just send one midwife for the baby vs. the two team that usually go to the hospital (one for baby and one for mama).

@Mrs. Goose: One of my midwives was the second person, and it was her first surgery, and she passed out right at the end - they were closing me up and suddenly she hit the ground. It was very exciting.

I was in for three days with my first (emergency), one night for my second, and two days for my third.

Standard in my area is 3 nights. I stayed for 3 for both of my C-sections.

@erinbaderin: drama! I'd actually like to watch my surgery, but I don't know if they let you and if in the moment it would freak me out. I did watch a video of a surgery after I had my first and thought it was pretty interesting. My midwife was 36 ish weeks pregnant during my labour and then c section so I'm glad she was alright. Although she was just there as an extra and it wasn't her first time!
