Any changes in benefits? As an hourly employee now I no longer have benefits and no bonus potential. It doesn't sound like that is the case for you, though.

I’m salary and don’t notice any real huge difference between that and hourly, except that I often work more than 40 hours a week without overtime (salary employees are not eligible for overtime, at least not anywhere I’ve ever worked as a salaried employee). But – that’s the nature of working salary I think – I think the idea is that you are better compensated, but expected to work until the job is done, even if that means staying late. The upside to that though is that my time is not tracked as closely. If I work late several days a week, but need to take a long lunch one day, or have a doctor’s appointment another day, it sort of all comes out in the wash, and I don’t need to use personal time for appointments.

@artbee: Yeah I hate that, sometimes I stay an extra 30-1hr and dont get paid for that. but I cant complain because I've taken lots of hours off for doctors appointments so it works out in my favor.

Also another good thing is when I go for lunch break I can be a bit relaxed and not feel like i have to rush back. When I used to work hourly I would always stick to a 30min lunch but now I take my full 1 hour or even more and go shopping and stuff..

@MrsBrewer: I didn't. But for my situation I knew if I asked for more they wouldn't give it to me and tell me to work less hours. Which was hard to do as a social worker, because people depended on me. And of course I ended up getting too wrapped up in it and felt awful when I couldn't do what I wanted to for people because there wasn't enough time in the day, and I felt super guilty and it stressed me out to the point where I was getting sick over it. And that's when hubby told me to quit

It's not often an accountant gets to work 8-5 all year long. There are certainly busier times (month-end, year-end, audit, etc) and I would be shocked if no one in accounting worked more than 40 hours during that time at your new company.

If it's true, I might need to find a new accounting job!

@MrsBrewer: Yes I did hate leaving, but I finally realized that my life and health comes first to me. Besides, right now I feel like I'm making the world a better place by raising my LO, who I know will do amazing things in her future

I'm on Salary, but get paid overtime hourly. So maybe that's something to consider. Because otherwise salary peeps usually don't get paid for overtime.

@MrsBrewer: at my last company, we were salaried with overtime. So, if we worked an extra hour, we got paid for it. At this company, we're strictly salary unless we get a bonus or stipend for something we did outside of our normal job.
