Have you ever been to, or have you had a housewarming party? Since we have never owned a home we have not, and I have never been to one. What are they all about? Do people come over to see your new place and you feed them? When our friends got houses we just went there to hang out and see the place, but it was just us, no party.

This is a great question and I'm curious to learn the answer too. My MIL wants to throw us a house warming party whenever we get our house and I have no idea what all is involved. I'd rather find out now before she turns it into a three ring circus.

Usually you just put out some food, friends stop by with a small gift and you give them a quick tour/hang out and catch up.

We've lived in several houses, but have never had a housewarming party. Would probably be fun to have a bunch of people over for a bbq after the boxes were cleared out though

So can you have a house warming party without it actually being at your new residence? The house we're trying to get the financing to purchase doesn't have a lot of space for parking and we have a lot of friends/family members.

@NaturallyCathy: I don't think it would make sense to have a housewarming party in someone else's house--the point is kind of to reveal your new casa.

@tororojo: Then we may have to have an all day affair. My DH said that it was probably going to be held at his mother's house, which I thought was kinda odd...

Yes, we had one when we bought our first house last year! It was GREAT! We had about 30 people over and I provided a bunch of appetizers and beverages (alcoholic and non) and just hung out and showed off the house! As groups came I gave everyone a tour, and everyone was really excited to see our new space!

@tororojo: Oh I wouldn't want them to bring a gift! I'd feel weird. Little appetizers or a BBQ would be fun though

@Bao: I don't think they HAVE to bring something, but I imagine most people would...like a bottle of wine or a candle or something. That's what I would do, anyway!

@Bao: Yea I don't think the gift is required but a lot of people bring bottles of wine or little house warming plants (I've gotten money trees & bamboo plants & rose bushes!) haha.

I felt guilty and didn't have one because I didn't want people to feel like they needed to give us another gift right during the height of our wedding/shower/engagement phase.

@Bao: I think I have gotten mailed invites, but an evite or facebook one would be fine if it's just a casual affair, in my opinion. Some of that might be regional? I'm from a big city in TX and am not a super fancy person, if that makes a difference.

@prettylizy: As long as people don't think it's a gift thing, I would love to have close friends and family over for dinner...but yeah I'd feel really weird if they thought they needed to bring something, or that's what the party was about.

@tororojo: that makes sense, we do Facebook invites for small occasions and it would be just real close family and friends.

We had one when we bought our house. We just invited a bunch of friends over for apps and drinks and showed off the house. Most people brought a bottle of wine or something small for the house like candle holders and picture frames.
@Bao: we used evite to invite people.
@NaturallyCathy: I would find it extremely strange to be invited to a housewarming party that wasn't in the new house!

@NaturallyCathy: I agree that would be very strange to have a housewarming party not at your house. Could you do it outside at the new place to allow for more room? I think the point is to show off the house

I totally wish it really grew money, if it did I probably would have tried to keep it alive longer....

@NaturallyCathy: Yeah I would think you have to have it at your house. People will want to see it, not your IL's house. Do an open house, so that will spread out the parking situation.
@Bao: I would just do an evite. We have talked about having one sometime this summer. That will be months after we move in, but gives us time to get settled, buy furniture, have the baby and get a little comfortable with parenthood.

Love housewarming parties, both attending and hosting! Usually with our group of friends, it's not about bringing a gift. It's just eating, drinking, taking a tour of the new place and hanging out.

I've been invited to a couple housewarmings. I sent a gift from a friend's registry to an out of town housewarming. Another housewarming was hosted at the sub-division's clubhouse. Typically, a housewarming is an open house, people can come and go between a set amount of time- 3 or 4 hours.

Ours was nothing fancy. We had a party with lots of appetizers and it just so happened to be at our new house. People will bring gifts though. You will get ALOT of wine.
