With all the winter gear talk, I'm finding stuff on clearance at Target (mainly a snow bib) for DD who is 8.5 mo now. But even at less than $10, I worry it'll go to waste if she isn't 12m by the time she is 12m, although she is pretty avg and true to size now. Then I'm worried that 18m is too big and won't work if she's swimming in it either!

At 8.5months I wasn't super comfortable because I didn't have a great idea of how she would grow. Now that she's 2.5 I know her growth curve better and buy stuff ahead all the time.

I buy ahead, but I wait for bigger things like coats, jackets and shoes.

Not at all, I wasted too much money in the past, so now I don't estimate.
For something like a snow bib, though, get the 18-24 month size. You can adjust the straps and cuff the legs.

I still don't really at 2. Mostly because I don't trust I'll get the right size, but also we get a lot of clothing gifts. So for a winter coat, if I can squeeze her into last year's for the first couple of months, probably someone will offer to buy her a new one for Christmas.
I do agree with @looch: that for snow pants you can prob go a little big or small and adjust the straps and cuffs.

I do a lot, but mostly with warm weather stuff. It doesn't get very cold here, so it's a pretty safe bet that short sleeve shirts and dresses can be worn all year. Just add a sweater and pants for our 3 months of cooler weather.

I do with warm weather stuff. Things with short sleeves and dresses and such can be worn for a very large portion of the year in Georgia. So my growth estimate doesn't have to be super accurate for things to work out!

I only buy for the upcoming season. Otherwise I'd just wasting money. But I wouldn't bother buying a baby that young snow gear, you probably won't even use it.

I buy stuff in advance all the time, but that's because so far it's always worked out for me! LO 1 is really steady with her growth and is on the small side of average, so I can safely buy exactly the size that corresponds with how old she is, and at worse she wears it while it's a little big.
She's never grown out of stuff before getting to wear it. She's 70% for heigh and 25% for weight.

I will do this now at 3, but before no way, she was all over the place. with my youngest I don't' buy ahead 1) due to having DD1 clothes to go through first to see what works (opposite seasons though) & 2) she's so petite I keep thinking a growth spurt has to happen.

@ShootingStar: yeah.. it's only $9 so that's why I figured it could be worth it to just get her in the snow even once for a picture, lol!

Not at all.
I think buying in advance makes it really easy to over buy. I never know exactly what my toddlers will need until we are in that season.

I did it more I. The newborn to 12 month sizes.
If I do it now, it would be only staple pieces that can be worn regardless of season like jeans and t shirts. I actually just purchased some gap jeans for J in the next size because they're less than $10. So I'm not opposed to buying ahead, though typically don't make a habit of it.
Though I never buy shoes ahead of time.

I don't buy much for her at all (grandparents like to take care of it), but we usually only buy one size ahead once we are heading into the new season.
