Did you buy, adopt or take in a stray?
My MIL's friend couldn't take care of her dog when her husband got really sick with cancer so we "adopted" and renamed him!

My husband bought the runt of a litter.
I met my cats sister in a shop I used to go to and asked the lady where she got her. Called up the woman and she had a litter of kittens although they were all claimed. I got a call a couple weeks later from the lady saying one woman backed out, and so that's how I got my cat. He was free.

We adopted both our cat and dog from the same no kill shelter. I wanted a cat and said we could just look at them but we came home with one. Then a few months later DH said he wanted a dog.

One cat was adopted from a rescue, the other was a kitten in a box outside the mall. Our dog came from a breeder.

People were selling puppies out of their trunk in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart. We were with my in-laws at the time and they took one of the males and we took the other male.
I promise to adopt from a shelter next time

We tried to adopt (privately, from an owner who had posted on petfinder.com classifieds) and failed. We were heartbroken so we found our Dory from a backyard (but responsible and champion-winning!) breeder in NH. She was supposed to be bred but ended up being too small, so the breeder sold her as an adult (9 months) to us at a discounted price. Then we spent 2 years looking for our second dog because we were determined to adopt or rescue. It was tough since we didn't have a fenced-in yard (our apt had a fenced dog run but most adoption agencies in Boston require the yard!) but ended up again with the petfinder.com classifieds. We found Remy in southern NJ, from a woman who had taken 2 chihuahuas from a neighbor who was moving away and needed new homes from them. The 2 chihuahuas ended up having 6 puppies unexpectedly. We got our pick of the litter! She kept the parents and 2 puppies, and adopted out 4 of them.

A Christmas gift (I had been wanting and picked her myself) from my ex. I had to wait until March to get her, but she was worth it. Furbaby is turning 10 y/o next month, I can't believe it!

We adopted our older dog from a shelter about 7.5 years ago. About 4 years ago, we were talking about getting a second dog and a friend said she knew someone who needed to rehome their puppy. We invited them over to meet the little guy, and they ended up leaving him with us! So his was private adoption.

I had been bugging Hubs to get a cat for a while, and finally after spending a long weekend at my sister's and realized that he is NOT allergic like he thought he was, he caved. We went to PetSmart one afternoon just to look at the kitties, with no intentions to adopt yet. But we were standing there talking to the woman from the adoption agency, and this one little girl was just staring at us...and then she started winking at Hubs. She was so adorable, so they let us take her and her sister into the back room to play. She was really sweet and very friendly. We ended up submitting an application that day and picked her up a week later.

We got our greyhound through a greyhound rescue organization. It's terrible what some race tracks do to their retired race dogs. Without these rescue groups, so many greyhounds would be killed and "disposed" of after they're done running!! And they are just the sweetest animals...

He was a rescue. DH got him before we met. He was 4 months old and had been brought back twice, but was the sweetest dog there. It was all a front, the second he brought him home he went crazy. But DH wouldn't give up and kept trying with him, and I'm so glad he did. He's still a crazy, but he's our crazy

We got both our cats from the free classifieds here. Our tiny girl cat was the runt of the litter and would sit in the palm of my hand and still have room. She still is the size of a kitten 1.5 yrs later.

We adopted our dog from the local SPCA. I got my cat (now our cat) 10 years ago from the friend of a lady I worked with. She couldn't take care of him anymore because he hated her other cat.

We got our cat from the shelter when she was a teeny, tiny baby. She was curled up against her mama in the cage, sleeping, and someone adopted mama-cat so they reached in and took out the mama cat; and our girl didn’t even wake up. I got all choked up and told my husband “she fell asleep next to her mama and will wake up all alone with no mama!” and so we took her home

We got ours from the local Humane Society. We knew we wanted one, checked online for when they had lots of puppies, and went in and played with a whole bunch of them in one evening, and decided which one we thought was the best fit for us in terms of energy and personality. A year later, we can't remember life without him!!

We bought our male, and then adopted our female from a family that suffered a huge loss and couldn't take care of her any longer. I hope to adopt all future pups
