How did you know your LO was for sure teething? DS is drooling like crazy and very grumpy/irritable, so I'm thinking maybe teeth are coming? But I don't really know. He's 5.5 months.
What did your LO do that were sure signs he/she was teething?

Honestly? I knew when I saw the teeth cut through. My boys never let me get a good look in their mouth, so I just have to guess based on (1) grumpiness, (2) night time sleep, (3) chewing and drooling. I know some moms can always see if their gums are swollen or red, but either I don't have that talent or my boys are particularly uncooperative about that. Good luck!

I could tell because of all the symptoms you described - excessive drool (he would soak through 5+ bibs a day! I got a master drooler on my hands), extra fussy/cranky, biting on things more, and swollen gums. 5.5 months sounds about the right time for teething to rear its ugly head.
Hyland's teething tablets worked really well for us. I'd also get one of those silicone/mesh feeders and stick cubes of breastmilk in there. He loved that. Frozen grapes in the feeders worked well too!

When the tooth cut through. I did a lot of unnecessary Advil dosing. Oh well.

I think most parents think their kids are teething before it's really happening. Babies just are a drooly bunch For us, it was a couple of months where he was drooling a lot and mouthing everything when I thought he was teething before any teeth started poking through. I was never really sure until I saw them. Recently as his upper teeth are coming in, he is definitely chewing on his hands right where the teeth are, so I know that's why, but I can already see them starting to come in.

Honestly we didn't know at all til the teeth came in. I remember at 5 months she was biting down on my finger and I felt teeth. I was shocked cause I hadn't seen signs other than a little drool. We've been lucky that her teeth haven't bothered her.

@Emsmems: our first one cut through today. She was cranky and drooling and gnawing on everything.

Crying for no apparent reason which was very out of character for her. Didn't become obvious it was teeth until they came through though.

@Mrs. High Heels: great, thanks for the tip. I'll bust out the mesh feeder tomorrow!
@SleepyMonkey: that's what DS is doing. He's normally very happy until he's tired... But today he has been crying and screaming out of nowhere.
If this is teeth coming, it really sucks because we are flying to a family wedding tomorrow. Of course it would happen now! Haha!

@Mrs. Blue: Ditto!
I can only tell once I can feel the tooth. LO didn't get his first tooth until 8 months, and I was certain he was getting one so many times prior to that! Of course, he cut his first tooth while we were on vacation, and literally a day later, a second one popped up!

The excessive amount of chewing 24/7 and the non-existent night time sleep. Hate teething because that means terrible sleep for like a month till the teeth break through then we get maybe a week of decent sleep before more teeth come through. Arg

Usually her grumpiness, excessive chewing, and horrible sleep are sure signs. She also gets awful congestion. This last time she had an unexplained low-grade fever and was tugging her ears, so I was sure she had an ear infection. I felt really dumb when the doctor pointed at the tooth trying to come through.
She was a grumpy, chewy mess for a good month before the first tooth popped through.

chewing and swollen gums. It's hard to get a good look though so, I really only knew for sure once the tooth cut.
@Grace: So do we.
