Any ideas on how to get rid of them?
We saw 2 hanging out on our neighbors deck for the past week, which we thought was because they eat outside a lot. But now there were 3 on our deck and we don't eat outside! Our decks aren't large so they are maybe 8' from our sliding door and I'm afraid they are stalking our small dog (9 lbs) for dinner 
DS keeps telling me there are big birds outside!

Whoa. No advice.. but that is cray cray. I would worry about my small pooch as well.

Yup I'm not a fan either. They are a little too close for comfort if you ask me! The flew away and DH just left saying they are probably out front waiting for him! lol...sort of
BTW, that pick was taken from our door, so that is how close they are!
@Reese: We had a co-worker whose Chihuahua was taken for a ride by an Eagle the other year!

I did a google search and here is how to get rid of Turkey Vultures published but the Turkey Vulture Society. I have never seen them up close in person only in the sky. I have to say they are scary!

Totally no help whatsoever but that's a totally creepy picture...do they just sit around...vulture-ing it up?

I know they had a bunch at my old office and they would scratch up the cars with their claws. So they hung a plastic owl from a tree where the vultures kept coming. It seemed to do the trick because I rarely saw them after that.

Ah scary! They're such mean giant birds!
Maybe you can get some noisemakers to scare them off.
Although I would probably crack my door open and throw some stones at them to scare them off.

@swurlygurl: Hmm I think just the last week or two? We saw them several days on our neighbors deck and then in the trees right behind our house, now on our deck.
The wooded area is very small back there. Just a line of trees on either side of the stream. All beside us is townhouses and then on the other side of the wooded area is a bunch more townhouses, so lots of people/houses around in a small area.
My FIL said to call animal control or something because of the area we live in.

do windchimes scare them away? maybe you could get one of those pest scramblers and plug it in outdoors?

We have vultures but they only come around when they know something is dead and they would like to get at it. Are you sure there is nothing dead or dying in your yard/under porch? Or maybe its their mating season?
Other than that, maybe give animal care and control or a local game warden for advice! Sorry this is happening, thats pretty creepy!

There is an ongoing vulture issue in our area, and I've heard of the townships coming out and hanging something called an effigy - basically something to scare them off. It can be a fake owl like mentioned above, although I think they actually used dead vultures here! For a long time my next door neighbor had vultures hanging out in his yard and roosting on his play set and honestly it didn't stop until he tore down the playset. (His kids are college age so it needed to be done anyway) We have a lot of rabbits and birds in the area so I'm guessing that's what they were after.

I would do either a plastic owl or tie up some string and attach those cheap metal pie plates-the sound and light reflecting scares of birds.

@anbanan15: LOL I honestly think that would be for the most extreme situations! I never knew what exactly they wanted in my neighbor's yard but other than perching on top of the playset they stood in the same spot in the yard every time. It's possible that eventually they'll just go away one day...I think when we stopped having so many rabbits (and their scent) around the vultures stopped coming by.

We have a motion sensored sprinkler at work. It basically sprays when they cross the barrier and they fly away. My understanding is it was about $150.

@anbanan15: We have seasonal vultures. They pose no threat to dogs, unless said dog is dead. They are scavengers, so they only eat carrion (dead stuff). They're quite useful, actually. There would be a lot more roadkill carcasses lying around rotting (and posing a huge health threat) if it weren't for them!
I am not exactly a vulture fan, but I think it should be recognized that they are actually quite useful. (Also, my introduction to them was when they were circling the top of a building full of lawyers. You know, birds of a feather.... 
)
@spaniellove: Dead vultures aren't going to scare them off--they eat dead vultures. I've seen it happen.

@honeybear: Ah gross! Cannibal vultures! I can vouch for the fact, though, that they have not yet carried off the tiny annoying dogs that live in a nearby yard so @anbanan15's dog is probably safe

@spaniellove: I was pretty grossed out, too. I tried hard to think "circle of life, circle of life..." when I saw what was going down. I think you and @anbanan15 are both in the NE, yes? If so, they'll probably mostly start migrating south in a few months.
If all else fails, turn them into a show for your LO. They walk like I imagine Richard III did, and it's pretty amusing to watch them drying their feathers (wings spread out) after it rains. But yes, they're a bit on the gnarly-looking side.

Holy crap, I didn't know vultures actually flew around residential areas!! @anbanan15: I thought when you said "Vulture" in your post title, I thought you were referring to a person who is vulture-like and hovering...? haha.

@honeybear: @oscarthegoon: Thanks for your input! I actually really don't care that they are there except they are so close to the house and destroyed part of the deck (we are renting and that isn't our stuff). I know they eat carrion. The dog comment was supposed to be a joke (notice the smile), however a co-workers dog really did get carried off for a little by an eagle.
