This is something we really struggle with. He basically refuses 100% of the time. Though I admit I don't try that often anymore.

I get DH to do it
This is when screen time comes in extra handy.

Well, lately, she's been chewing them down pretty far so I don't get a chance to trim them :T But before that, I would use nail scissors to trim them while she was nursing (when she was younger) or I would let her watch TV.

Sorry if this seems really gross but I bite the nails to trim them! He just won't let me near him with a nail clipper and I worry I will clip them too low when he is so squirmy. It grosses me out so I only bite one at a time (like one a day), when he's distracted. This method was actually suggested by the woman who taught the infant care class at his pediatrician's office, so that helps me feel less weird about it.
His toenails seems to regulate themselves and don't need trimming, thank goodness. I don't know how I would handle those!

I try and distract her with tv, book, toy, and do one hand at a time.
persimmon / 1147 posts
Distractions and quick clipping! Although often she will only cooperate one hand/ foot at a time.

She's not quite a toddler yet (11.5 months) but this is the only time I ever put cartoons on. Sometimes it only gets me enough time to do one hand but it's better than nothing. I was surprised that cartoons work better than adult channels (which seems pretty obvious now).

TV and quick cutting. He's pretty chill about it now, though (but that wasn't always the case).

I do their toes while they're in their high chairs and I do their fingers just after the bath bc the nails are soft!!!!

I use scissors like these, but this aren't the exact ones

Chloe is a girlie girl and likes having her nails done. This includes getting her nails and toes trimmed.
When she was younger and squirmier, I just used a nail file.

Since they're bigger now, we just use a regular sized nail clipper and put on Little Bear. When they aren't entranced with that - which is rare but does happen - we sing to them. Well, Mr. Bear sings to them and I cut their nails and hum along. Can't sing and cut at the same time. I'm just not that focused

I do it while she's eating. She's very chill then, and only then

Oh boy, I feel like I'm the only one who can't go near my toddler with nail clippers. You've inspired me to try out some these distraction techniques tomorrow!

@QueensBee: Yes. Yes. and Yes.
I do the same, recommended by the Pediatrician, and don't touch the toes. Not weird at all
ETA: I cut LO when she was only a few weeks old with clippers so I don't think I'll use them again until she is much older. The mom guilt was insane!!!!

Thanks for the suggestions! I have tried screen time and DHs help in the past but it has been a while do its worth another shot. I like the idea of doing toes while he is eating in the high chair too!
nectarine / 2994 posts
I make dh do it! She enjoys watching them being cut so far which is weird!
cantaloupe / 6687 posts
We sing "where is thumbkin" as we cut each finger. When she was younger I let her hold something she wasn't usually allowed to touch in the hand I wasn't cutting. Now I just sing the song. For toes we do "this little piggy" and again when she was younger I let her hold the snot sucker or the saline bottle so she would sit still for me

I do it when she's asleep. Sometimes she asks for the nail clipper and I can get a few done while she's awake and interested in the process.

@Mrs. Taco: Haha, thanks for posting! Nice to know that I'm not alone with my unconventional strategy!

Nail cutting and hair cutting is the only time he gets any screen time - so one of us carries around a 3 minute dinosaur train or What Does The Fox Say clip while the other cuts.

Bribery. lol.
My son is super interested when my daughter paints her nails, so I tell him I'll put clear polish on his nails if he lets me clip them. If that doesn't work, I tell him I need to clean the buggies (bugs) off his nails. Haha. Mean? Maybe. But it works. I do the same thing to get him to let me brush his teeth.

my kids are older so they're fine, but screen time always works!
pomelo / 5621 posts
Usually one of us distracts him while one quickly cuts. Maybe next time I'll try a cartoon, I don't know why I didn't think of that.
eggplant / 11824 posts
I do it covertly while she's asleep. Girlfriend does NOT like her nails being trimmed and no bribes or screen time will convince her otherwise.
pomelo / 5791 posts
I use scissors after bath time. He typically doesn't care too much.
bananas / 9227 posts
Cuticle clippers + screentime. It's been the only way for months now.
pineapple / 12566 posts
I find it is easier to have LO sit on my lap so that his fingers are facing the same direction mine would be if I were cutting my own (does that make sense?), instead of sitting facing him. We sing a song and it's usually over pretty quickly.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I use cuticle scissors and I find I have to do it at a time that is not after the bath, because his nails are so soft as it is.
I have been using cuticle scissors on my own nails forever though, I can't get a clean cut with clippers, especially on my dominant hand.
pomelo / 5720 posts
He's pretty good about it but we usually sing or count each one while I;'m doing it. Luckily he has huge feet which makes cutting the nails a little easier. lol.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
I do it after bath time every 1-2 weeks. Either while DH reads or he'll sit in my lap if I let him play with something with his 'free' hand. His toes I do once a month?
squash / 13208 posts
Holding them down while they scream in terror! Seriously, when younger neither of my kids liked it - so DH would hold them and I would cut as fast as I could!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@Mamaof2: Hahahaha - yes! I have to wrap my legs around her and use both arms to keep her still while trying to be stronger than her (how are they so strong?!)
It's slowly getting a *little* better. I make a huge silly production out of each nail clip, and count down each time we finish a nail. Then we have to clap for each finger... it takes forever
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@californiadreams: she's been much better about it ever since she saw me trim my nails! Now when she has a split she will ask me to trim them.
pomegranate / 3393 posts
I do a little of everything, and without too much success...I bite them off, try while he's sleep, in the carseat, give him a distraction...I can't wait until he just lets me do it already!
pomegranate / 3272 posts
I use the nail scissors as the 2 times I've used clippers, I've cut him. Never again! I still have a hard time getting him to let me cut them but I usually do it after eating when he's still in his high chair. It's not a good system.
