Anyone have a toddler who likes to wake up at 3:30 or 4:30 in the morning and start yelling your name? Mommy! Mommy! Daddy! Daddy! Not crying, not sad. Just "I'm up! Come get me!" Type of yells. Our 2.5 year old has started doing this and it's killing me. What do you do about it?

Have you tried a toddler alarm clock? They have those ones that change color or something when it's ok for them to get out of bed and/or disturb you.

With DD she is my more relaxed kid - I usually have her pee and then put her back in bed and tell her its not time to wake up yet - she eventually falls back asleep.
With DS it was a nightmare. He is 6 and if he sleeps past 6am I am THRILLED!!! I think he was around 2.5 or 3 when he started waking early as well. We tried the stop light clock (aka: ok to wake) and he could care less! On the bad days I admit we totally locked his door (I had a video monitor so I could watch him). Sometimes DH (who can sleep thru anything) would go lay in his bed while he colored or played with some toys in his room. Sometimes I brought him in bed with us and tried to get him back to sleep, which never happened and I would eventually just get up!
5am is a very much normal wake time for him - he must have low sleep needs like DH - I figure I cant force him to sleep. As he has gotten older he does great with coming and telling me he is up but then going back to his room until 6am during the week and 7am for the weekend.
The ped told us that btwn 4-5am if they wake its VERY hard to fall back asleep and this was so true for DS!
So not much great advice but commiseration - praying this is just a phase for her!

Yeah, she never goes back to sleep when she wakes early. We started a habit of letting her watch TV just so we could close our eyes for a few more minutes, too. But then...15 minutes after being in our bed..."Let's go eat, mommy!" Child. It's 4:57am. We are NOT eating breakfast now!!@ShootingStar: I have heard about these a lot but I just don't know if they will work with her yet. That is, unless I get some kind of microphone into her room that I can speak through and say..."Is your light green yet??" Hahaha.

That happened to us this past weekend. M (she's 2.5) came into our room at 5:30 and my husband said to her "go back to sleep" and for some reason she listened and did just that... and went back to bed until 7:30...yes! I don't count on that happening ever again.

My son has never woken up that early as a toddler/preschooler (feeling so lucky!), but what did work for us was to leave a cup of water, his potty chair and a stack of books in his room at night. We told him that if he woke up early and didn't hear us (our rooms used to be right next to one another), that he had to stay in his room and he could look at books.

We always say "it's still dark, it's night time, go back to sleep" and she usually does with little fuss, however it is 90% always in our bed, since she doesn't yell out she comes running into our room and expects to crawl into bed to cuddle.

This happens all the time - at 27 months, if it's before 6:00 a.m., I pop the pacifier back in, lay him back down with his lovies, sing, and then walk out. Sometimes there are a few tears for a while, but he usually falls back to sleep.
