I like guac so eating avocado is fine with me but it has zero taste alone.
I have heard about avocado toast but again, where's the flavor?
How do you eat it? Are you suppose to season it with something?

I looove avocado. I normally cut it in half, take out the stone then drizzle lemon on it and just dig in with a spoon. It's also delicious cut up in salads or in fajitas.

Oh, man, I eat avocado any which way. If it has no flavor, are you sure it’s ripe when you’re eating it? And are you eating good avocados like Haas vs. those flavorless everytime I've tried them imposter "florida avocados"?
If I’m eating avocado more plainly (like on toast, or just by itself), I only season with a little pinch of S&P and sometimes a tiny bit of lime juice, but it has plenty of flavor on its own.
We also have avocados in salads often, of course tacos, and you can make a pasta sauce from mashed up avocado.

I just had avocado for lunch. I took one avocado, mashed with a sprinkle of salt and served it with toast and swiss cheese on a closed-face sandwich. I think its my favorite lunch these days.
pomegranate / 3244 posts
A sprinkle of salt makes all the difference! Sometimes when I pack my lunch I'll cut it in half and scoop out the pit, and then use that as a receptacle for tuna or chicken salad, yum!

@yoursilverlining: hmm, not sure. I know it says "ripe when soft" but how soft is soft? I do try to buy the more firm soft ones - maybe that is the problem?

@Mamaof2: I cut it in half and add Tabasco!
I had to stop eating avocados though, alas. Each one is like a couple hundred calories! Didn't realize that... don't think it's tasty enough to justify the calorie count.

All the time!
I like to slice it up and put it on top of eggs. On sandwiches. In salads. On shrimp and grits. On toast.
The trick is definitely some salt and pepper and lemon or lime.

Yumm I love avocado! Toast, avocado, and some salt... delicious. I also like to add tomato, sometimes hot sauce. I can eat a half of an avocado by itself with a little salt. I also love it as a topping on chili, tacos, burritos, salads...

A little bit of salt (kosher or flaky salt, not table salt) makes the world of a difference!

Avocado on toast - with garlic and lemon or sriracha, feta, capers and salt/pepper!

I don't remember who told me to eat an avocado like this but I take a fairly ripe avocado (soft) and put a bit of sugar in it and mash it up. I think you can put some crushed ice if you want it cooled. It's like an avocado pudding, of sorts.
That's how I like it but DH will put sliced avocado in his eggs and spinach. I don't like avocado warm so I'll pass.
I do enjoy them in salads.

Avocado toast! Spread avocado on toast and sprinkle a bit of sea salt on top. The sea salt really adds an extra dimension to the avocado. So yummy!
I also like to eat it in a ground beef bowl. Ground beef, stir fried veggies, sliced avocado, and a fried egg on top! And in salads, and for avocado smoothies.

@Mamaof2: I buy firm ones too (sometimes even rock hard, since they all have to get shipped up here to New England) but then you have to give them several days to ripen up. If it's "crunchy" at all, or doesn't very easily mash with a fork, it's definitely not ripe and they are very flavorless before they ripen. Hope this helps!

@Mamaof2: salt helps a lot. Also there seems to be a variance in good fresh avocados versus green store ones. Kinda like a tomato from the grocery store tastes like cardboard compared to a tomato from a garden?

LOVE avocado, sadly DS does not
Guac, plain with hot sauce, plain with salt/pepper, any which way. Avocado is def about the texture

I like to take a half an avocado, mash it up, put it on a slice of toast, some S&P, then a runny yolk egg on top. Sometimes I put bacon on it too. So relish!
BLT's with avocado is also good.

I eat them almost every day! Avocado toast is my favorite, I don't think I've ever eaten a flavorless avocado? What I also like is avocado toast with prosciutto, yum! It's also great with eggs or plain or in maki rolls.

I do like avocado but DH doesn't and neither does LO. But these sandwich ideas are great for lunch for me! They're also fairly expensive imo so I don't buy them much.

Mmm, avocado. I eat it sliced up on toast with lime and tapatio, in sandwiches, on eggs, in salads, burritos, tacos, tostadas, on its own with lime and tapatio, sometimes in soup as a garnish, in eggrolls, wraps. The possibilities are endless.

On sandwiches, on salads, on eggs....I got hooked on avocado when pregnant w/ DD#2 (I'd eat one a day) and haven't really stopped. I think they're best with just a little salt, but will add lime or hot sauce depending on what I'm eating them with.
I eat pretty healthy and am breastfeeding, so I'm ok with the calorie count. I try to split one with my husband who is also a big fan. My oldest doesn't like avocados...am going to have to try her baby sister on them pretty soon!

Last night i just ate it with cheese
Avocado is mostly fat so is kind of 'buttery' by itself, which is probably why you feel like it lacks flavor... but yes it has to be good and ripe, too!
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Mamaof2: spread it on a baguette or some other fancy bread that you have toasted. Sprinkle salt and a little bit of lime juice on it. Delicious!!

@bluestriped bee: I looove avocado with sugar! It tastes like ice cream.
Or an avocado shake. I just hate waiting for them to ripen.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@T-Mom: I haven't put them in a shake yet but I should!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
I salt and pepper it and just dump it on things as a condiment. mostly eggs.
admin / watermelon / 14210 posts
make a salad with tomato, lemon cucumber, salt pepper.
avocado toast of course - just eggs over easy and avocado on bread.
crab or tuna over the avocado with sriracha!
pomelo / 5220 posts
Pretty much anyway you want to serve it to me. In ceviche, as guacamole, on a taco, in a salad, in sushi rolls, in avocado egg rolls (umm Cheesecake factory ones are amazing)... yum yum yum!
They definitely have no flavor if they aren't ripe!
clementine / 806 posts
A ripe avocado should mash easily with a fork, but still be green (huge brown spots = overripe). It will be flavorful, whereas unripe ones generally aren't.
Avocado toast: I love using a seedy bread or pumpernickel, mashed avocado, drizzle of lemon juice, sprinkle of salt, red pepper flakes. *Swoon!*
squash / 13208 posts
Thanks all - so many great ideas! I def think mine aren't ripe so I will try to get softer ones!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
@bluestriped bee: never heard of adding sugar! I must try that soon!
I love avocado! They're so good in sandwiches, salads, or in California rolls. Also love it straight out of the shell, with just a sprinkling of salt & pepper, or soy sauce. Yum!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
In guac or in a chicken wrap.
DDs absolute favourite food in the world is avocados. Just straight up avocado.
pomegranate / 3375 posts
I eat avocados alllll of the time. For toast: a little lemon juice, evoo, salt and pepper. I use them in smoothies (instead of banana) sometimes. You can mix with pesto to make it creamier. I put them (plain) on tacos or taco salad. Yeah, the key is seasoning them a bit, and making sure you get a perfectly ripe one.
grapefruit / 4085 posts
I like to mash it on toast and add some sweet chili sauce. M loves avocado too
