Would you be okay with your children (let's say they are 4 and the other just turned two) playing outside while you/your SO mowed the lawn (the other is inside)? It's a safe neighborhood with a cul de sac, but the yard is unfenced and they do like to run off at times. The lot is about a third of an acre.

Nope. Too easy to not hear something and if they're close enough to see and hear, they're close enough to get injured by a flying rock or something. Maybe I'm just paranoid!

Since the yard is un fenced, no way. I also grew up with a lady who was mowing her lawn and didn't see her 18 month old daughter had come out to watch her and she backed over her with the riding lawn mower and her poor DD lost her leg up to her hip.
So for me, lawn mowers and kids don't go together. There's also the possibility of a mower picking up a rock and throwing it dangerously and seriously hurting someone.

As long as the adult mowing was watching them closly. My hubby takes my two year pld put when he cuts.the grass and he loves it. Although my husband watches.him closly.the whole.time. it works for us.

i voted yes. i'm assuming that the person mowing the lawn is using a push mower and can see the children!

Nope, a fenced yard maybe, but my two year old is too wild so not for us.

No. Mowing demands a good amount of attention and it's hard to hear anything else around you. A fenced yard would be different.

No way. I'm going to be paranoid about any kind of mowers after a coworker's grandson had an accident last year. And I also don't think my DH could give both the appropriate amount of attention.

Nope. When the lawn mower is on, the kids are inside, regardless of whether another adult is around or not. Even in a fenced in yard, I think there are too many horrific accidents that could occur from just a moment's distraction, or even just a freak accident (ie a rock flying etc).
DH cuts the grass after work when the kids are done outside for the day, or early on a weekend morning before the LOs go outside. It's just not worth the risk in my opinion.

We have a big yard so not really room to run off. But that smaller space that's hard.

We have a fenced in yard and I don't leave my two year old out there unsupervised. There's no way I could pay close enough attention to her while mowing. Girl likes to figure out new ways to kill herself.

No way! A push mower takes concentration and is kind of dangerous, imo. I don't see how that's safe. With my personal SO no way, he wouldn't ever, because he isn't a multitasker AT ALL.

A 4 year old probably, but it depends on the 4 year old. Definite no to the two year old, particularly since it's an unfenced yard.

I feel like I can accept there may be some possible way that it could be safe... but I can't see it. Seems like it'd be too dangerous if you were on a riding lawn mower because it takes too long to hop off and run to the kid if they were headed for the road. But if the yard is small enough for a push mower it is probably too small to trust them to stay on the property without constant supervision. I grew up on a few acres and on a big yard like that it seems possible if they were in the back yard away from the road. But a suburban yard seems hard.

No. My husband struggles to watch zuma when she's a foot in front of him, let alone with him pushing a mower.

My father is a professional landscaper and owns a business in addition to doing consulting (residential and commercial). Children should never be outside while the lawn is being mowed; rocks can kick out from under the mower (push mower or ride-on) and the noise is a distraction. He would never allow us or a client's child to be on the lawn while it's being mowed. Never.

No, our rule in general is that if DH is mowing, then DS and the dog aren't allowed anywhere in the yard. The only exception is if I'm on the deck with them and I gate it closed. DH is also never allowed to have DS on the (riding) mower with him with the blades on. He can take him on short rides but no cutting grass as the same time.
To me, mowing is so dangerous that it's just not worth taking any chances. I would never let a 4 year old and a 2 year old out in a yard while it was being mowed, fenced in or not. I'm not sure there will ever come an age when I'll let the kids play out there while DH is mowing. It's very loud and takes a lot of concentration, and he wears noise canceling headphones at the same time.
So for me, lawn mowers and kids don't go together. There's also the possibility of a mower picking up a rock and throwing it dangerously and seriously hurting someone.
