Hmm that's a tough one...if I were really close with them I'd probably just ask if everything is ok, and that they seem a little different lately and if they wanted to talk about anything, I would be there to talk. They may come out and admit the way they have been feeling.

Tell them about your experiences with depression and see if they describe something relatable.
It doesn't always have to be your personal experience, just describing and telling a story of empathy, may allow them to open up. You could always follow up with an open ended question after the story...."Have you ever felt that way?"
