I have a two and a half year old and a 10 year old cat. Recently my toddler has gotten very aggressive with the cat and the cat (for some reason) hasn't learned to stay away from her. We do our best to keep them apart and have talked to our toddler until we are blue saying she's hurting him/ he will hurt her but she doesn't listen to a word. Time outs, talking, yelling doesn't matter she just plain doesn't listen when it comes to the cat. The situation is getting pretty bad

Ugh. We are in the EXACT same position with our 2.5 year old and out 13 year old cat! Don't know what to do!!! It's getting worse

@hellobeeboston: exactly! Our toddler thinks she's being loving by giving "hugs" and "playing" but we just can't get the message through for some reason. I've even warned that the cat will have to live at a grandparents house to keep him safe

It sucks, but our cat goes into another room with her litter pan and we shut the door. She's out during LO's naps, and since he goes to bed at 7pm, she has the run of the house after that time.
I know it doesn't seem fair, but it lowered her stress level (and mine) considerably.

@Tanjowen: we might have to do this but I feel bad because he is such a social cat and has his favorite places around the house

@autumn865: I know, our cat loves being around the house and loves DH (me, not so much). I remind myself often that it's just a stage and soon LO will be able to gently handle the cat, but it's best for both parties right now. We do take her out every so often and let LO give her treats and "pet" her and demonstrate how to do it correctly and she sits and takes it like a champ.
Maybe try it and see how your cat does? She might love the peace and quiet, or she might hate it and be miserable. Hopefully the first option!

Lo is 2.5 and we are dealing with her "playing" with our dog. Our dog is friendly, has always been great with her...even through the tail-pulling phase. However, now our dog just wants to be left alone and can't seem to hide from DD. We've talked and said Finley doesn't want to play, ect. but it doesn't work. I've tried everything so I hope someone has some tips!

When LO first came home we had to separate him and the cats. Not because he was being aggressive with him but he's just unpredictable and loud and that was too much for them. The litterbox is in our en suite bathroom so we were able to just shut the bedroom door and give them a safe space. I would rarely, if ever, allow LO into our room.
Once both LO and cats realized that the bedroom was their space, they come out and roam freely and interact with him. They all generally kind of ignore each other but he does pet them gently.

We have a lot of places up kinda high for the cats to escape to. We have a lot of cat towers around the house, this way they can be out and round us but safe. N still gets in their space sometimes and work on gentle touchs but I would be lying if I said it always worked. Just last night on of the cats had had enough and nipped N on the back of the head.
Our dog is pretty chill with the boys but she has a lot of options to get away from them if she needs to.

We just reiterate over and over, "gentle hands, we pet <dog> gently" and show him what gentle is. He likes to pat kind of aggressively, so I'll usually stick my hand in between them so he pats me instead. Our dog likes to generally be close to us, so when DS comes over to her, one of us is there to monitor the interaction. If we're not on the couch, I figure the dog is smart enough to walk away if DS bothers her. There's plenty of places she can go that he can't reach her. Usually she just takes it though, lol.

We have this issue too. I want them to get used to being around each other but I don't want things to get too rough. My son tries to be affectionate with the dog but he's kind of unpredictable so the dog wants none of his hugs. Then he pulls on her giant tail and won't let go. She just licks him but it's not right and we're always getting him off of her. The other night he had a super grip on her tail and she took off, with him attached until he slammed his head into a chair. I felt horrible about it but he just will not give up! I don't want to have to completely separate them but I also have no idea how we'd do it.
Our dog is pretty chill with the boys but she has a lot of options to get away from them if she needs to.
