My books are currently in stacks next to my bed, not ideal but I have no other place to put them right now. I want them out so I have easy access to them. How do you organize your own books (not your LO's) ?

We have one large bookcase in the living room and nearly everything is there, arranged in alphabetical order by author. I keep books I am reading or haven't yet read on my nightstand.

My husband is an avid reader, and he has one large bookcase from Crate & Barrel, and a tall, skinny one from Ikea. We are buying a house soon, and he wants to have a dedicated library, where he hopes to have custom built shelving for all his books. He currently has run out of room, so they are stacked everywhere.

In bookcases. We have four in the living room and I have another in the bedroom. Although they are all overflowing, so I need to figure out even more storage...

I have a small bookshelf in my office. Usually I read a book then pass it on. I never have more than 50. We also have a shelf in the kitchen for cookbooks. DH has a 9 section cube wood IKEA bookshelf in his office. He hangs on to a lot of books for work.

I have two tall bookshelves in a room we haven't really defined (you enter it when you come in the garage and it has a fireplace, but it's award for TVs or seating so we have a table for mail and keys, bookshelves, and a desk)
In my room, I keep a few books I'm currently reading on my bedside table.
I try to buy on kindle if it's something I'll likely read once. If I know I want to highlight and keep around for future reference, I get a hard copy.
I sort books by category. DH has a shelf and we have one of kids books, one or two of photo albums, one of religious books, one of my dad's books, and one of old books. Then I have shelves for things I've read and want to keep, and things that are waiting to be read.
And I sort nicknacks on the shelves similarly (religious things on the religious shelf, things of my dad's on the Dad book shelf, things of my grandparent's on the shelf of old books, etc)
The bookshelves are the simple 6 foot Ikea ones (Billy I think?) and they've survived 3 moves.

I mostly get my books from the library, so I don't have too many hanging around. I use a small bookcase as a nightstand, and keep some there. We also have a bookshelf/cabinet thing in the living room with glass doors and I use that to store the "nicer" looking books and decorative things. I have one small shelf in the kitchen for cookbooks.
My rule is that if it doesn't fit in one of those three places, I get rid of it and am pretty ruthless about it. And unless it's something that I'm likely to read again it goes in the giveaway pile once I'm done.

We have a large bookcase in the office. We also have some bins of books in the basement. I need to go through them all to see what we can donate.

DH has a VAST book collection... When we decorated our house, we lined the whole back wall of our den/office with bookshelves, and he has additional bookshelves in the basement.

I have a nightstand that has 2 drawers, all the books that I am reading go in there.
As for other books, I have a ton at my parent's house, every once in a while I go threw them and weed out a few. But I buy very little any more...that's my main organization technique.

We have a lot of bookcases and I organize by topic and author within them. I have some nicer copies of some books that I like to put either on top of the bookcases or in prominent spots within them. The bookcases are where about 90% of our books are at any given time. The other 10% are scattered all across the house or in a stack on or next to my desk!

We have floor to ceiling bookshelves in our bedroom where most of them are stored. They're organized mostly by size because a couple shelves are shorter and can only accomodate the smallest paperback size. I try to keep everything by an author together, but they aren't alphabetized. Sort of grouped by catagory, but not strictly.
We also have a short bookshelf of books in our dining room that is somewhat randomly organized.
And for both bookshelves, I do the think where I'll have most of the books th normal way, but then stacks of horizontal books here in there, which helps break it all up, visually.
