I say it what I believe is the traditional "correct" way, "Mahr-rio", like this:
BUT DH says, "Marry-o" which I've NEVER heard!!! I think he's weird...
what do you say?

@katiew92081: I *almost* noted in my post that DH is from Long Island so he says a lot of things funny, to me at least hahaha!
@mrs. bird: I KNOW RIGHT?!?!

I'm on my phone so your video won't play for me, but I say Mar e o. I think that's the same as your Marry-O?

Unless corrected by the person, I say Mahr-rio. But, there are some Marry-os in the world.

I'm from NEW JERSEY (Italian-land) and say Marry-o. My husband refuses to "know" what I mean when I say Marry-O Kart and says "what??" Until I say Mahh-rio Kart, LOL

I have a cousin with that name and we pronounce it the way you do (aka the correct way).

@KJfromNJ: hahaha yup. I think it's the Italians that say it like that then!!! cause that's NOT how you'd say it in Spanish and it's an equally popular name in both cultures! LI is primarily Italian too so that may be where DH gets it from.

@Mrs. Pen: well, it IS an Italian name
I say it Marry-o and I'm a Long Islander.

I'm a New Yorker so I say "Mary-o". My husband, a dude from the country, pretty much rages whenever he hears it. He's staunchly on team "Mah-rio" on refuses to acknowledge that technically, both versions are correct. I've known a few "Mary-o's" in my day so obviously they're not saying their name wrong.

Funny we just heard that on HIMYM and were discussing it- Marshall's mom said Marry-o, which I'd never heard before. In AZ we have tons of Mario's, and they all go by Mahr-io.

@swedishfish: But it's also a Spanish name!! When I went to Peru I met at least 5 Mario's!!
@KissMeCait: must be a New York thing

@Mrs. Pen: I pronounce it the Spanish way. Italians in Italy also pronounce it like that, but the first syllable is drawn out a bit. (I'm Italian! and I speak Spanish)

Mary-o as well... I am pretty sure all the commercials here in Canada pronounce it that way for the Nintendo game...

I am from NY and I say MAH-ree-oh. Everyone who says Marry-o, you must be a super gringo.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
@mrsmate: seems the Italians say it that way though. So only super gringo to any Spanish culture.

@Mrs. Pen: the Italians in this country are pretty gringo-ized, no? I married into a large Italian family in Boston. The only thing Italian about them is their last name and the bragiole at Christmas. And no one speaks the language. I don't think I've ever met an Italian-American who speaks Italian.

Yup! Prairie, white as they come (even had to google what gringo was lol)
But I still blame the Nintendo game for my pronunciation lol...
