I don't know what I'm doing wrong! We got a new washer in July (HE top loader) and maybe that's the issue. I tried stripping diapers last week by washing and rinsing repeatedly w/water only (like...all day long) but just changed a wet diaper and it reeked of ammonia already! We don't have hard water. Should I change detergent? Use less? Use more? Add something to the cycle? We have all BG freetimes and 4.0s. I pre-rinse w/cold water, do a heavy duty hot cycle and an extra rinse. Should I add towels to the load so there's more water? Any ideas would be appreciated, I'm so annoyed. Also...DD barely drinks water, most of her fluid intake comes from fruit and milk- could that be the issue, really concentrated pee?

You should give their customer service line a call. I did, and they helped me find a stripping solution that worked for our diapers and our washer. With an HE washer, I think you have to do something different than we do with our traditional washer. We do a hot wash with Dawn dish soap, and 2 cycles of hot rinse to strip. Then a normal wash with the BG laundry soap. We get the WORST ammonia build up, too. It's horrible.

I boil my inserts when we get stink, usually every 4-6m.

I did hear that HE machines make cloth diapers difficult because they don't use enough water. What kind of detergent are you using? We use original tide powder and it works great. Rumparooz recommends using it because the enzymes in the detergent get them cleaner and prevent this problem. Ive been using ours with your same wash routine for over a year and don't have any issues, and have never needed to strip. Every couple months i will notice a faint smell, and i buy a trial size of rockin green and use that in a wash. I dont use it all the time because it is too harsh for most diapers. But occasionally it is enough to knock any little stink issue out.
I would definitely talk to cotton babies and see what they recommend. Different manufacturers have very different recommendations.

With my HE top loader we've ended up with pre-rinse cold, then heavy duty wash with pre-soak and two extra rinses. I occasionally use Penguin Sport Wash instead of Bumgenius detergent and very occasionally add bleach to the hot wash (Bumgenius recommends once per month).
Fluff Love & CD Science on Facebook has a lot of advice and information (although a lot of it invalidates the warranty). Just want to make you aware of that resource. They tend to recommend using a stronger detergent than some of the cloth diaper ones. Often in this type of situation they'll recommend RLR soak followed by bleach soak followed by a few rinses.

I strip using something called squeaky pieces I have also added vinegar to the rinse cycle and it helped, but the local cloth diaper folks said it was bad with our water.
