Okay, so I will admit, I've never thoroughly cleaned or sterilized my washing machine before, but I recognize that my machine is probably gross as heck! We wash cloth diapers in there as well. We have a top loading washer and I'm always aware of the dirty clothes/diapers that touch the top of the agitator where the water doesn't get to it, and that kinda grosses me out! How do you wash your washing machine? How often? What cleansing solution do you use and what is the water setting you use?

If you have a modern front loader the best thing to do is run it with just hot water. That cleans it better than anything else, because any other solutions or detergents leave residue

I use the tide HE washing machine cleaner. I run that through on the sanitize setting (with an extra tub rinse) once a month.

I have a front loader also, but I used vinegar and some baking soda and set it on the "clean washer" cycle. It sanitizes.

I have a front loader and use Affresh whenever the machine asks for it.

We live in an apartment and have a common laundry room, so I try to not think about how icky things might be.

we have a front loader & use a cleaner (forget the name, i got it at target, it's a blue pkg) if it gets stinky. but now we try to use warm water sometimes and always leave the door open for it to dry out which has really kept it from getting icky.

Top loader and have not cleaned it in the 3.5 yrs I've owned it!

Top loader, cleaned it once with a vinegar solution, it needs it again! I found the idea through Pinterest, I bet you could just type in "washer cleaning" or something like that and find it!

I've never cleaned it, but sometimes use bleach in the laundry so I figure that does a good job of cleaning it. I am careful to leave the door open so it doesn't get funky in there.

I've never done anything special to our front-load HE machine either. I try to leave the door open to let it dry out and always make sure the gasket doesn't have any little water puddle left. I wipe down the gasket rim with a Clorox wipe every few cycles. Never had any smell or issue.
