I currently don't have anything to store boots in other than just standing them up next to the shoe rack, but they tend to fall down. Anyone have a great solution? I wish my DH and I were handy so we could just build something, but we aren't.

I used to put empty wine bottles in mine, to help them stand up, but now I use pool noodles cut into thirds.

I have a shelf I keep them on and stick cut down pool noodles so they don't get a weird crease.

I have a couple of pairs of boot stays (plastic forms that fit inside) that I got cheap, but a lot of people use pool noodles! I would use those if I didn't have the others (and wish I'd seen that idea first!)

@looch: Interesting about the pool noodles, but I'm not sure that I will be able to find them in the winter.
After that, where do you keep them?
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I keep them in one of two closets. One is in our laundry room, I kept one shelf off so it would fit my tall boots. I've also stored them on their sides, that works too, but I am fanatical about keeping them clean.
Another option is a hanger, there are special boot hangers you can use.

@looch: Our problem is that we have zero storage in our apartment (no closets!), so I'm envisioning some sort of shelving unit that can go in the entry way.

I keep the boxes for my nicest ones, and store them in the boxes, and stack them in my closet. I'm in a small apartment so my options are limited.
For my non nice boots I just throw them in my shoe bin in my closet

@Mrs. Pen: See, I don't even have a closet where I could store mine! Closets are really uncommon here.

@lamariniere: what does your entry look like? We had one closet in our last apartment, it was a built in and I loved it! Used every square centimeter!
We had a closet rod with a shelf over it, it was wide open, no doors. I hated it. I wish it was at least enclosed, so if you have the space, I'd get a three door cabinet from IKEA and put in some shelves, a rod, and a few shoe organizer things.

@looch: it's tiny, maybe 6x6 or so. I would take a pic but the lighting would be terrible right now. There is a tall window and a radiator immediately to the right of the door, so nothing on that wall. Facing the door we have an ikea shoe bench and a coat stand in the corner. The stroller goes to the left of the bench and that's it. I considered an ikea cabinet when we moved in so we could hide all the costs and shoes, but there simply isn't enough room for one.

At one point I had searched high and low for fun closet stuff to neatly and prettily organize everything..I remember at The Container Store there were boot "holder" things, basically tall metal things that sat on the floor that you would slide them in. I had planned to order those initially and would have if I hadn't changed my plans. I think they were really affordable too! Check there!

@lamariniere: Similar to @Mrs. Pen: I have plastic boot stays, and I usually line them up in the garage or have nicer ones stored in their boxes. The ones I wear constantly usually in a pile next to the door.
I've long wanted to find a vintage cabinet and do a shoe curio, but have yet to find one. We also have one of these things in the garage, maybe you can put it next to your door?

I put pool noodle pieces in mine. Now they don't tip over anymore!!

We have a cedar shoe closet but I keep the boots upright on the shelves by cutting wide strips of cardboard. Very classy.

I have boot stays from the Container Store and line them up in my closet.

Took pics this morning so you can see what we are dealing with. The space is pretty small and I hate just having all the boots scattered since they don't fit on the shoe rack. Also, I would love to get rid of the coat stand, but can't seem to for the moment.

@sarac: The current situation is a pile. But I'm neurotic and it makes me crazy.

I have this in my closet and keep my boots in the large compartments at the bottom.

@lamariniere: I really don't see why you can't get rid of the current bench and coat rack and get a small armoire? I mean, if you measured and it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit, but I have to believe that there is some kind of premade 2 door closet that could work.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@looch: the problem with small ready made armoires is that they are too small to fit ALL the shoes and coats. The big ones or customizable ones that we've found are more than we want to pay.

@sarac: haha! Mine too. I always wonder why my boots never look nice for long.... I clearly need to invest in some pool noodles.

What if you put a high shelf above the picture and then just lined them up on it, with boot shapers in them.
pineapple / 12793 posts
I used to have a low mounted rod and boot hangers. It was perfect. I haven't put it back up in our new house yet, but my boots fit my pregnant calves, so right now they are in a box in the basement waiting for next year.
Kind like this....

@oliviaoblivia: we literally do not have closets, none! Otherwise I would just store them in the closet.
pomegranate / 3244 posts
I do something similar to @oliviaoblivia. I use a slacks hanger and hang them in the closet. Could you mount some sort of shelf/hanging rod above the bench?
pineapple / 12793 posts
@lamariniere: you could build (who has time to build stuff?!) A bench and do something similar underneath. I see your pile dilemma. That would drive me insane (no judgment, our house is often like that too).
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@lamariniere: what about vertical space? Can you stack two things on top of each other, secured of course.
pear / 1955 posts
That empty wall with the scooter by it - could you do a boot rack there, vertically? Something like one of these?
pomegranate / 3921 posts
I keep mine all thrown in a laundry basket in our closet. I wouldn't recommend it.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@looch: maybe. The big question is finding the thing that can be stacked!
@raspberries: I like those ideas. The problem is that the the door is a double wide door, so nothing can go immediately to the right of the door because if we fully open it for things like furniture, it wouldn't be able to swing all the way open.

We used to magazines in the boots to keep their shape and store them on the floor.

@lamariniere: what a beautiful entryway! Is there an armoire in another area where the shoes not being worn can be stored?
