Just got the new cesarean rates per hospital for 2010.....
I'm posting the Texas link since that's where I am, but you can find your State along the right side of the page.
The 2 hospitals where I live have a 43.5% & 40.7% rate..... EEK!
How's your hospital measure up?

When I have children in the future, the hospital I would deliver at seems fairly low at 26.9%

My hospital is at 33.3 according to that list. Not bad considering the sheer volume of births that take place there.

Ours is 26.2% at Wake Med in Raleigh. Interestingly enough, the other hospital in town (Rex) has a 36.5% c-section rate. The practice I go to is really into vaginal birth if at all possible. One of the OB's in my practice talks about vaginal births vs c-sections in this article. I'm so glad I found this practice:

The two hospitals I might go to are 38.1% and 22.6%. Now I'm leaning towards going to the latter!

Wow, 29% and 13% are the 2 we're debating between. That 13% is appealing!

My hospital has a 35.8% rate. Although it’s not the highest rate in the state, it’s on the higher side because it’s the biggest hospital in our state, and also the only one with a NICU and also the one hospital where mothers with any sort of serious health issue or high risk pregnancy from across the state have to go to deliver…so I’m sure that ups the rate a bit.
Interestingly enough, despite the sort of high rate, the hospital recommends and encourages natural births and supports all natural birthing methods (except for water births due to risks/liability). They don’t push for medical intervention, even epidurals, unless the patient asks, and only after you’ve labored for several hours.

The hospital I was going to deliver at (switched to a birthing center) is New York Downtown Hospital and their C-section rate is 26.4%.
This is also interesting because the week I switched there was a report on the news that this hospital performed a C-section on a 16-year-old girl who wasn't pregnant!
The hospital my birthing center transfers to has a 20.7% C-section rate and had the most births of any of the NYC hospitals--I'm pretty damn pleased about that.

According to this website, the two hospitals I may deliver have c-section rates of 45.6% and 44.2 % But I think I have seen lower numbers on another site. but maybe that was for a different year.
I'm not going to let all the rates to affect me though.
These rates dont really tell us much in terms of how many of these c-sections were actually requested by the moms and maybe even scheduled ahead of time. I dont think its the hospitals fault if more moms in the area ask for c-sections.

Mine hospital was pretty low actually, also my doctor really wanted to avoid a c-section if possible.
But the numbers are also several years old from this survey, I would ask the hospital on a tour or find out more current numbers to be sure.

@Mrsbells: Not sure what state you're in but I know Texas gives risk adjusted rates.... so it should be low-risk mom's who went in for a vaginal delivery.
Just to add to all: A tech that works at one of our hospitals responded to my link with
"....Lets remember ALOT of those deliveries are from young teenagers who's bodies can't always handle a delivery. Their bodies aren't capable most of the time...."
I always thought it was the opposite =/

@mrsjazz: Yeah I heard about that 16 yr old but apparently she told them she was pregnant and couldnt feel the baby anymore and her belly was actually protruding as if she was pregnant... I guess they should have done an ultrasound first but they just kinda took her word for it that she had a baby in there.
@runsyellowlites: Oh I wasnt aware that these are risk adjusted rates? so these percentages are only for people who ended up with c-sections but didnt actually want them? thats disturbing..
I also kinda agree with the comment about teenagers. theres lots of 15 year olds having babies and they dont have a fully mature female pelvis' although in the old days teens gave birth naturally...

What really freaked me is when I saw the 100% for one hospital. I actually went & checked the dshs site & it was accurate! I went and looked on the hospital site JUST to make sure they weren't like a high risk hospital or something & nope, just a regular ol' Medical & Surgical Hospital. *gasp*
ETA: the dshs site I checked is "risk-adjusted primary cesarean rates" =/

@runsyellowlites: Well, the girl thought she was pregnant!
@Mrsbells: Even if she had that psychological disorder where someone thinks they're pregnant--doctors are supposed to monitor the baby, too! Two of the doctors are still at the hospital and would've possibly been on call if I stayed with that practice. Yikes!

The hospital I want to deliver at is 31.5%. Definitely not great, but the lowest in the state of a large hospital. All the ones lower are small regional hospitals, which I would imagine don't take as many high-risk moms. They also have a midwife practice, which lowers your chance of a C section by 50%.

33.8% at the hospital my gynecologist works out of. When I get pregnant I am going to tour some birth centers before making a decision.

They won't post Georgia's rates. I do know that the hospital we are delivering at is one of the highest though. They deal with a lot of high-risk births so I am sure that plays a big part.

@marriedandlovingit: Wow I can't believe they aren't available... I'd also ask them if their rate is a "risk-adjusted rate" or just overall.
Like I told a pp Texas' rates are "risk adjusted primary cesarean rates" so they don't include high risk or repeats in that number.

@Leialou: A friend of mine moved from a hospital birth to a birthing center & LOVED it... she just recently had her 2nd lo all natural at the same birthing center. =)

@runsyellowlites: I am curious. We need to write the state dept to find out though. (?!) Too much trouble to go through lol :P. I know that the reputation of that hospital is where you want to go here if you are having a high-risk pregnancy.

The hospital I delivered at is 33.6%. I'm surprised it is that high - they did everything they could to (successfully) avoid a C-Section when I had DS. The hospital is in a very natural-granola kind of town, so I'm really surprised the rate is that high.
Interestingly, the hospital I was delivered at (in my home town) has one of the lowest rates in upstate NY at 24%. They also have a new maternity ward with awesome birthing suites.

The hospital where I delivered has a 16% rate, definitely one of the lowest in the area! the other hospital in my area that I had been considering using is 13% and it's the lowest in my state. Pretty awesome! However, both these hospitals are 1 hr+ away from where I live, I actually chose my hospital because of the low c-section rate and the doctor's reputation for respecting mom's wishes to go natural. I had a great experience.
The hospital that is local to me, 15 min away, has a 32.8% rate.

My hospital is 31.8%. It's higher than I thought it would be since I chose this hospital because it's known to be very friendly towards natural births and midwifery.

The hospital I used shows at 40.1% for the Cesarean rate. I was not in that percentage!

Our hospital is 22.1%. This is in laaaaaaaarge part due to the fact that my midwife exclusively delivers at this hospital, and she has a really low c-section rate.

The hospital I work and will deliver at was like 14% last year (that just the straight count up the numbers and divide number of sections by total number of births from the birth book). From my experiences working there, I have every confidence that they only do c-sections when necessary.

We're 31.8%. Not great, but I know they're actively trying to lower it. Also, they claim their rate is on the higher side b/c they're one of the hospitals in the area w/ the highest level of NICU, so a lot of high risk pregnancies end up delivering there.

The hospital we're delivering at is 38.1%. The hospital down the street from us is 21.6%, but the NICU isn't nearly as good as the one we're delivering at, and that was a major consideration for us...and the second hospital never called back when I tried to make an appointment. I'm not thrilled with the C-sec rate at our hospital, but I get my primary care from a midwife, and we like the hospital and our satellite clinic, so I'll take it.

They don't list MI rates by hospital, but the state average is 35%??

@Mrsbells: exactly. These are just stats without and discriminating data about how the numbers were arrived at.
My hospital landed in the mid 30%. But also has a NICU and other variables to consider.
Regardless of means, healthy delivery is delivery.

@Nskillet: I wish all states got them the same! Like I had said, Texas rates on this list are "risk-adjusted primary cesarean rates" so they are for low-risk 1st time cesarean moms.... not high risk and not repeat.
That actually scares me even more for my city b/c they don't do vbac in the hospitals here SO that 40+% doesn't even include elective repeats! eek! Especially since "elective" or not absolutely necessary cesareans have raised mortality risks for both mom AND baby. =/
I really wish all states retrieved their data like Texas though so we could look at it more objectively & accurately!
