Well, my son was in a 5s program last year, it was play based and only 4 hours, 5 days a week. I can count on one hand the amount of worksheets that he brought home in the entire year. They had a ton of time outdoors on the grounds of a nature center.

Now, he's doing a lot more academic work and the day is 6 hours long. He has to sit for long periods and only gets 20 minutes of recess. He's much more tired and gets easily frustrated during the period between dinner and bedtime.

We are mostly OK now but the first few weeks were rough. DS was only in a 3-day 9-2 play-based preschool last year so going to a 7:45-2:45 academic program 5 days a week was a big leap. He's also one of the youngest, so not quite as up on his fine motor especially. That said, he's gotten much better, and it's amazing how fast he's starting to read.

He definitely gets tired. Once Thursday rolls around he always seems so annoyed that he has two more days until the weekend.

Dropping all naps was challenging. She was still napping fairly routinely. It was a fairly smooth transition for us, but I credit that to the Pre-K program we did. The transition from daycare to Pre-K was a little more challenging.
