And the car in front of you doesn't go.
How long do you wait to honk?
I give them 3 seconds and I'm being nice!

I never honk. I mean unless the light comes and goes, then maybe I will. But I don't think that's ever happened.

I wait between 3-5 seconds depending on my mood Distracted driving isn't cool. People should be paying attention.

Depends on if LO is with me. If he's not with me, I honk after a few seconds - I'm very impatient! If he's with me, I try to wait longer and keep my temper. But seriously - we all have places to be....move!

I also follow a three-second rule. Anything longer than that is just like, come on dude, eyes on the road!

Hahaha. I am a northern transplant to the south. I honk almost immediately.
nectarine / 2765 posts
Ugh. This is such a huge pet peeve! When it turns green I expect you to go immediately dammit! I wait a few seconds & only honk if it's been a few good long seconds.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
I'd wait around 3-5 seconds too... Most of the time I'm not honking to be mean but to really let them know! Some people are on their phone and what not and really have no clue that the light turned green.

I'm usually pretty patient, but if its an advanced green arrow and you're not going...there's a honk coming your way.
nectarine / 2465 posts
I always feel bad when I honk so I wait about 5 sec and do it as quickly and light as possible, haha
watermelon / 14206 posts
I'm not an impatient driver but I'll honk after a few sec to let them know.

I'd probably lightly tap the horn after 3 seconds or so. I'm pretty patient, so it would have nothing to do with how much of a hurry I am in. But if I was in some weird daze and didn't notice the light go green, I'd hope someone would prompt me before I slowed too many people down!

3 seconds sounds about right. But I also do that "light honk" that I mean as "wake up and drive yo" unlike the "heavy honk" I do when someone is truly being an asshole on the road.

I'm a very impatient driver so I barely give them any time at all
nectarine / 2936 posts
I never honk, just mutter things under my breath. The worst is when they finally go right at the yellow light and you get stuck there another cycle.
pomelo / 5469 posts
I can't recall ever honking someone because they haven't gone on a green light. Maybe everyone here is just in a rush, idk.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
@Mae: yes.
I HATE when people honk at me when it's been like, two seconds. geezus. sorry, but regardless of how much of a rush you're in, a few seconds won't make a difference. sometimes I don't like to waste gas by gunning my engine.

@alohaorchid: are you originally from out east? I feel like everyone here is a super slow and lax driver. Drives me crazy.
Sometimes I'm patient and other times I'll honk right away. If they're obviously not paying attention then I'll lay on the horn. And I don't think the horn should be reserved for danger, it's perfectly appropriate for "wake the f* up!"
persimmon / 1404 posts
@Sammyfab: I actually grew up here, but I do feel like everyone here is slow and lax. It drives me crazy too!
I'm the worst... a few days ago I actually honked at someone because they were driving too slow. I'm sorry, 20 in a 50 is not ok! If you're lost, pull over so I can move!
honeydew / 7444 posts
@Mae: I wish there was a "polite honk" option on the car...i sometimes try to wave so they know i'm not being a jerk!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Few seconds. But usually they go while I'm doing the should - I - should - I - not hover over the horn
pear / 1998 posts
@Mae: I do the same thing. A light, quick "beep-beep" if they are not paying attention. A good long 2-second HOOOONK if they cut me off or are doing something dangerous.

Poll results are interesting. Most of us honk after 3 secs. I'm amazed that there are people who never honk. Guess my east coast blood makes me a bit impatient, but really people should be paying attention to the road and not holding up traffic. Whatever they are doing is distracted driving.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
I never honk...unless it's something crazy like 30 seconds. But I don't remember the last time I used my horn
pomegranate / 3791 posts
@sorrycharlie: I'm not saying they need to gun their engine, but if it's been several seconds and you haven't even taken your foot off the brake...yeah, you have a honk coming your way.
I'm surprised there's some people who never honk! While walking L in his stroller, I've seen cars around here sit there for a full light cycle - like red, to green, back to red, without moving! Usually because they're on their cell phone and paying zero attention. Sometimes not honking is just not an option unless I feel like sitting there until they're finished with their conversation. I hate some of the drivers around here.

Ha! What a timely thread! I guess I must have been in front of a hurried east-coaster today, because I was at a light, it turned green, my foot was off the break and I shifted into 1st when the lady behind me honked! It couldn't have been more than a second!! Sheesh!! I usually give it 5 seconds or so before giving the polite honk.

I have been honked at AS SOON AS the light turned and I had no idea why (eta: I was already hitting the gas!), so to be honest I find the people who honk at every little thing just as annoying as people who don't go when the light changes. I don't count, it just depends on the area/situation. If I had to guess maybe five seconds? Four? Whenever I think they aren't going to go without someone letting them know the light changed.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I don't usually honk in that situation. I am a pretty cautious driver. I am more nervous that someone might shoot me, lol,
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@wonderstruck: Yeah, I'm pretty sure that if a cop was behind one of the drivers that didn't go within 3 secs, they would definitely get a honk. I don't know if they can pull them over.
Drivers are bad here in Seattle, too.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
Ugh! I was behind someone who was distracted at 3 different intersections. I almost had to honk 3 separate times!! Each time, I gave them 3 seconds. The last time, I laid on the horn! (I honked the first time... light tap.) Come on! If you are honked at once, don't you think you should pay attention the rest of your trip?? Get off your freakin' phone!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
If they are looking down (like at their phone!) I honk IMMEDIATELY!
Otherwise I usually don't honk, unless it's been like 6 or 7 seconds or so!
grapefruit / 4800 posts
I might do a light honk after 5 seconds or so. I feel like people regularly take a second or two to get moving so 3 sounds pretty quick to me. If someone honks at me I drive very conservatively afterwards, no ones getting anywhere fast if I get honked at for something silly like that.

I'm an awful angry driver - and a bit of an a**hole behind the wheel. Not sure where this comes from but it's true. I don't hesitate to honk if I can tell they aren't paying attention - but I always feel like such a jerk afterwards. But while I"m sitting there waiting I feel all sorts of rage. I try to "light" honk but it's hard to achieve.
Also, if I'm sitting in the passenger seat - I cannot keep my mouth shut - I always blurt out "it's green" the second it turns green if I feel like the driver is lollygagging. Drives my husband insane. Whoops.

If it's a regular green I wait a few seconds.
If it's a green arrow, I honk immediately! Let's get gooooing!
