We're exchanging a crib bumper for curtains at Pottery Barn Kids. They have two kinds I like - one is sheer, and one is blackout. The blackout are $20 more per panel which means we'd save $80 total. The store credit for the bumper won't cover the full cost so I'd like to save money, but are blackout curtains really important? The windows have blinds.

How dark is the room during a bright sunny day?
For us, they were critical, because even with blinds, the room didn't get dark enough...but my son was a light sleeper!

We didn't have blackout curtains... we don't even have regular curtains, just blinds here. P has always been a light sleeper (if you even thought about going into the room she'd wake up), but they still didn't make our "necessary" list.
ETA: I think your views on baby sleep/training would play a part too. Since we don't sleep train, expect P to sttn, then having an environment that would inhibit/contraindicate training isn't that big of a deal. If/when she wakes up we just cuddle/nurse back to sleep.... if sleep training was something important to us then having her sleeping environment set up with black out curtains would've been very necessary (her window faced the afternoon/evening sun & was on the second floor so it was pretty bright).

We got them after we we moved LO to his own room because it was much brighter in there than ours had been during the day and I found they made a significant difference in terms of getting him down for naps as well as duration

We just use our blinds with regular curtains, works just fine for us, no need for blackouts.

We didn't have them until the kids were about 9 months old and it started staying lighter outside. Since we put them to bed by 7, the blinds and the non blackout curtains we tried just kept the room too bright. So in short, for winter, no big deal. For summer, they are essential for us. But we just got cheap panels from target, so if you have pbk curtains you love, I'd probably splurge on them.

I wouldn't get them from PBK! They are cheaper elsewhere. Still expensive though.

Our LO has never had a problem sleeping in a bright room so not necessary for us.

We have blackout curtains from PBK and while we've never not had them, I think they are SO helpful! They are really good quality. In my opinion, its better to spend the $80 now, rather than replace them in a few months when you realize you need blackout curtains. As PPs have mentioned, think about the brightest of the room during different times of the day/year.

I think this is one of those things you won't know until the baby is here. In our case they were VERY necessary.

No idea for with kids, but for our schedules, it's DEFINITELY necessary or it messes with our sleep. You can always pull them back to let light in the room.

@daniellemybelle: we just did blinds and regular curtains. I'm hoping we can get away with that.

We have blinds but it was a necessity to blackout curtains as well. I fell in LOVE with the ones from PBK but couldn't afford them, ended up with black out panels that attach to regular curtains. So I say get them!

We have sheer curtains and blinds and we've never had an issue.

not necessary for our daughter. she goes to sleep and wakes up at pretty consistent times, whether its light out or not.

We have wooden blinds plus the blackout curtains. For us, the blackout curtains were not a necessity even though we have them. We definitely could have skipped them.

Blackout was an absolute necessity for us... Little c would wake with the sun if he could see it. Thank heavens for black out curtains - I would buy them now in case you change your mind and end up buying them down the line...you won't be saving any money then

We didn't need blackout curtains. We purposely didn't tiptoe around LO's sleep because a friend advised us that she would come to NEED darkness and silence to sleep. It worked out for us, but as others have told you - every baby is different so it IS possible yours will be pickier about sleeping conditions.
