After potty training? When will you trust them to wipe on their own...Age 3, 4, 5 ? Or is that right away? I know nothing about potty training...

DD's been potty trained for about 2.5 months now and I still wipe her butt when she poops. I have her bend over and I use diaper wipes.
She can wipe when she pees though.

haha..from my experience with siblings and nanny LOs, help wiping #2 until around 4. sometimes, they just don't get it all, but I guess you could always stain treat after the fact if necessary? LOL! so gross.

I don't trust DD to wipe herself with poop. She doesn't get the concept of front to back, and I don't want her to make something weird or bad because she wiped poop. I don't even think she can reach that far.... I'm assuming 4 to 4.5

I am hoping by 4? Still wiping for her at 3 but it's usually clean after she poops so it's not big deal. I'll use a wipe and there's usually nothing on it.

@chopsuey119: I guess that means they eat super healthy? And I do not eat quite as well??? LOL!!!

We still wipe DS1 and he'll be 4 next month. I'm hoping by 4.5 he'll be able to do a good enough job to do it himself.

I think I have heard (either read somewhere or heard in a class) that from an anatomical stand point kids aren't really physically able to effectively wipe their entire rear end until closer to the age of 5, so I think somewhere between 4-5.

@prettylizy: Not yet, maybe at 23.5 months?! Haha

Dd is almost 5 and we still wipe. We are working on it but you would be surprised how much coordination it takes to wipe front to back! It's one of our summer projects before she turns 5...

I will definitely wipe #2 until they got the hang of that, mostly it seems to be around 4. Wiping pee, they should have that down with the whole peeing in the potty

DS, at the beginning of Kindergarten (right when he turned 5 years old) was still having me clean him when he pooped. I guess we were stuck in a habit of me taking care of it for him.
One day, DS yelled for me to come tend to his butt, and DH asked me when he was going to start cleaning himself. I said, "Soon, I hope!" and then DH asked DS what he does when he poops at school and DS said, "I clean it myself!"
So, I stopped in my tracks and exclaimed, "then I'm not doing this!" and left the bathroom.
He's been doing it himself ever since, lol.

@Dandelion: I was just going to ask what happens when kids enter kindergarten! I guess they learn pretty fast to wipe themselves!

@delight: Yeah, they learn a lot of independence skills there. Mostly by necessity, lol.

I have no idea but I remember my little bro and he was getting help until well into the 1st grade (maybe even 2nd grade). He'd yell, "I'm done"! I didn't realize how weird that was until now!

Ellie was 5. She'll still ask for help occasionally if things were particularly... messy.

By 3.5 at the least. I teach Pre-K (4 yrs old) and they can wipe themselves and I never smell poop on them, so they are doing well.LOL
