Until he falls asleep :). I am very diligent about watching his wake time and putting him down when I know he should be ready to sleep so we get little fussing/crying. When it happens though, I let him work it out for as long as he needs to. The general rule for nap training though is to leave for 30 minutes (Ferber) or a full hour (HSHHC). 5-10 minutes is not a lot of time for them to figure out how to fall asleep on their own.

Well, he typically goes from fussing to inconsolable crying in like 30 seconds, so not long at all. I let him fuss as long as he's just fussing, but we aren't doing any sort of CIO at this point, so I rescue him pretty quickly. He become absolutely hysterical if we don't and then takes a good 30 minutes to calm down, so we dont mess with it. That mixed with reflux that has hit a rough patch again, and sleep training at this point seems well off in the future.

@winniebee: I hear you! I couldn't let my LO cry hard for a whole hour but we've never had that happen. Like @cvbee said, if you time it right and your LO is an independent sleeper then the fussing/crying should be minimal.

I should clarify that if we had any hard crying then I would intervene at every 10 minutes or so. For naps, the longest I have attempted a nap is 45 minutes before getting him up and it was always if I was attempting a nap after 4pm. I would then take him for a drive to get him to fall asleep.

For bedtime, hard crying occurred very rarely but again, I'd intervene once just to snuggle him after 10 minutes and then let him work things out. The longest he has ever cried at bedtime is 25 minutes.

Also keep in mind that babies usually cry harder after a check but they're protesting...not calling out for help!

Wonder Baby is almost 8 months old, but for me it's not about the time as the level of her fussing. I know her well enough now to know if she's just rolling around and grumping or if it's switched to her actually being upset. So sometimes I can hear her for an hour, but she's just complaining, not crying. And sometimes she gets very upset very quickly and I go get her. But we aren't pretending to CIO, just helping her learn to settle without constant help.

No longer than five minutes. But she's 14 months old so I can usually tell if she's fussing because she's just tired and needs to fuss it out and it should only take five minutes for her to lay down and relax, or if she pooped and that's why she's fussing.
