Like, a day. It's one of those things that I just mentally HAVE to get out of the way or it drives me insane.

I know people say a year is okay, but I have a friend who got married in September and I have yet to receive a thank you. And it totally annoys me! I'm old school like that.

ETA: for my wedding, it took like a month because of course there were A LOT. But for smaller gatherings, like showers or LO's birthday, I think anything longer than a week would start to stress me out.

It took me like 3 weeks after my baby shower to get them all done. I definitely wanted it out of the way before the baby came. Some people gifted us things after the baby was born, and they never got thank yous. oops. I hope they understand. I couldn't even remember who gave us what to send a thank you.

I definitely try to get them out in under a month. If I am motivated, I really like to do them right away, but I never let more than a few weeks pass or I'd feel REALLY guilty! I'm working on a few this morning myself - shower was the 7th, so I'm just over the 2 week mark and already feeling bad for not getting them out sooner.

I'm usually pretty slow with these, but I've always thought like a month is pretty reasonable. I made a big push to get the baby shower thank yous out before baby and just finished all of them (I think) last night! Now the challenge is that SO specifically wanted to write a few of them to his family members and friends, so I have to make sure those go out without being a total nag.....

Whoa, I had no idea people thought a year was ok! I felt terribly guilty taking 3 weeks to respond to some! I got all my shower thank yous out about 2 weeks after, and just have a couple stragglers...but yeah, I'd say a month is about my ultimate limit.
