I'm really impatient, so by the time this scenario comes around for me I'll probably be begging for the induction... BUT, I'm really trying to avoid it. She's been measuring small, and I'm a first time mom, so I'm expecting to go after my due date (Feb 11th). I would obviously prefer baby girl to come when she's good & ready, so I'm wondering how long they would let me go past my due date without inducing me. How long did you go after your due date before being induced? Did resisting induction work for you -- did lo come on his/her own?

I went into labor on my own at exactly 40 weeks, my ob was going to talk to me about induction at my next appt!

I went a week overdue. The plan we had was since I had no risk factors to going past due, to do a non-stress test at 41 weeks, and induce at 42 weeks. Obviously if the non-stress test showed it would be safer to induce, they would have induced then, but it all ended up being unneeded since I had the baby a few hours before my NST was scheduled!

Until there is a true medical indicator that I NEED to be induced, (low water, heart rate issues) which aren't that common because most babies will come on their own between weeks 41 and 42 with no issues at all, my midwives will not induce me.
They start doing non-stress tests at 41 weeks, I think, unless there is an indicator for one sooner.They do not induce for convenience, a "big baby" (since that is known to be completely inaccurate), or for any other reason that is not a true medical need.
As I tell my clients all the time though, the doctor can't FORCE you to have an induction. It's called "informed consent". Unless there is a real medical indicator and you actually need one, you can just say no, or don't show up for the induction. It is your child, your body, and your choice.

2 weeks. Luckily she came before then. They did want me to come in every couple days for a nonstress test once I was overdue.

In my birthing class they said they induce at 41 weeks because they've found the babies older than that have issues with meconium.

My lo measured big, so I had an induction scheduled a week after my due date. She came on her due date though.

My midwives would "let me" go until 42 weeks. And even then it would be a matter of discussing our options, not a pitocin sales pitch.
You have every right to refuse medical procedures - it's called informed consent. A doctor legally cannot force you to do something you don't agree with.

in my drs practice its 40 weeks, imho i would not feel comfortable going past 40-41 weeks, to me the risks outweigh it, ( i know not a very popular opinion with the all natural crowd) but there are risks when going over due, i think you have to find a balance between the baby coming on its own BUT also what is safest for you and your baby, really its a personal decision betwween you and your dr.

When I was exactly 40weeks, I had an OB appointment and my OB told me that if I didn't go into labour naturally by 40w5d, I would be induced. I ended up giving birth on 40w4d.

Between 41 and 42 weeks, and my doctor only induces on Thursdays due to her schedule. So if LO doesn't come on his own, I'll be induced at 41weeks 2days.

The Mayo clinic says that unless there is a specific medical indication (high blood pressure, low fluid, etc) that they recommend a wait-and-see approach, not an induction, until 2 weeks after the due date.
I think that is has just become culturally acceptable to think of the due date as a expiration date, and automatically induce regardless of medical indicators.
I'm not knocking women that choose to induce, just pointing out that if you don't feel an induction is necessary, you are probably right, and backed up by medical research.

I haven't even asked yet. I've been having some high blood pressure issues, so I will likely end up needing to be induced before my due date (I'm 36w3d now). I'm hoping to put that off as long as possible though (to 38+ weeks if I can). If my bp were low/normal/stable, then I have an OB appointment at 40w2d and we'd probably discuss induction plans then. I'm not sure I will make it that far without needing an induction for medical reasons before then.

Doc usually does 41 weeks but she said sed let me go to 42 to respect my wishes. That said I had plenty of fluid, great BP, NST all looked good. DD came at 41w3d on her own

I would have been given two weeks, and then maybe a few more days, but extra monitoring started at 41 weeks. I was then found to have way low fluid and reduced movement and needed to be induced pronto. I was totally closed and not effaced, so my induction was hell, and I just barely avoided a csection. I would absolutely suggest avoiding one if at all possible - especially if you're not dilated. It was awful.

I went into labor at 41 weeks, but I had an induction at 41+6. That's as far as my practice will let me go before induction.

I think it's standard practice here for inductions not to occur prior to 10 days past due unless there are medical reasons that necessitate an earlier induction. Fortunately, LO was born on her due date so it was not an issue.

My doctor suggested induction from 41 to 41+3, which is next Saturday to Tuesday for us. We will schedule it Wednesday, and see if we make it. I am still not sure what date we'll choose. The earlier side works better for more DH time home once she's here, the later allows greater potential for her to come on her own, so I'm not sure yet!

I talked to one of the practice's midwives about this at my last visit and said I don't want to be induced just because the clock is ticking, and she said, "no worries, not going to happen here." She said their c-sec rate is also very low, which they are proud of. We didn't talk specifics but I feel very comfortable that if it came up before 42 weeks, unless there was a medical reason, they would be cool with me waiting it out. That was especially important to me because I ovulated on day 20 so really could be a week past my due date and still not be late.
Now, ask me again how I feel at 40 weeks + 1 lol

I know another mom that just went to 42 1/2 weeks! Her lo showed NO SIGNS of being overdue and had lots of vernix.... her nst & bpp had all come up great so they waited it out!
With that, no practioner can legally MAKE you have an induction! If all looks good with you & baby then there is no. reason. not to wait!
With DS they basically induced me at 40+3 and I had a failed induction that ended in cesarean. This go round I went to 41+4 and DD came on her own! She was 6 lbs 1 oz and I am SO glad I had a provider that was willing to wait! Had I been pushed to induce at 40 weeks (if I wasn't a vbac) then DD would've been close to 5lbs.... if I had scheduled a repeat at 39 weeks (the norm for erc) she would've been even smaller and NICU time would've been a definite!
Any doctor that practices elective inductions before 41 1/2 weeks, in my book, are not up to date with evidence based medicine. All studies that I've found on induction have all shown a 40-50% cesarean rate for elective inductions done before 41 1/2 weeks.
My lesson learned was find a new doctor if yours starts pushing induction without legitimate medical cause, including "big baby" since acog does not recommend need for induction or cesarean for this. Yea it may seem rash but I didn't and ended up being a statistic, my friend did and she's had 2 successful vaginal, non-traumatic, births.

I'm in New Zealand and my midwife typically does not induce until 42 weeks.
As it stands I'm 41 weeks today and on Wednesday (ten days overdue) I go up to the Hospital for a post dates assessment where Baby will be monitored for thirty minutes and I will have a scan for fluid levels and providing all is well I'll be left till 42 weeks.

It really depends on your OB but I think most like to wait till 41 weeks. Some 10 days after EDD.
The initial plan for me was to induce at 41 weeks but the week prior I was in enough discomfort and progressing enough that we ended up scheduling a induction ON my due date. But she came 2 days before by herself!

My doctor said 10 days. But I developed pre-e and was induced at 40w1d

Mine said he wouldn't let me go past 41 weeks. I went into labor before that and DD was born at 40 w 4 d.

thanks for all of the insight, ladies! i definitely trust all of the doctors and midwives at my practice, so i have faith that they'll do what's best for me and baby girl (my hospital actually has the lowest c-section rates in virginia!). i actually have an appointment on wednesday, and i'm going to talk to them about their induction protocol.
