Just 1! That's the rule (for now), lol. But we also pray, sing 2 songs, and then pat her back for a minute or two.

3 for the toddler, all short. Usually just 1 for the older kiddo, buts it's long.

3 books, potty, and one more book. The last book motivates her to go potty or she'll insist she doesn't need to go.

1 book, but he's not quite 11 months yet. Then we sing the "Snuggle Puppy" song from the Sandra Boynton book

I've never set a number. On average, we do 15 min. at night in bed in recent months, but we do most of our reading at other times in the day.
It seems like this question comes up a lot and I'm curious why you'd set a number?

4 books. If it's later than usual for some reason, she picks one longer book and a few shorter ones. It usually takes 20-30 minutes to read books at bedtime.

@honeybear: For us, if we don't set a number, DD will keep asking for more and more as she loves to read... so this prevents whining/meltdowns. She can then read in her bed for as long as she wants to (usually 45 minutes).

@LulaBee: I understand. I had the same issue--we'd finish a picture book, or I'd say "we'll finish this chapter" for a chapter book, and then he'd say "Okay, now this one!" (Uh, no. Mom is tired, kiddo!) I started telling him to put whatever he wants to read next in a certain spot on the floor by the bed, and we'd read it first tomorrow. That seems to satisfy everyone.

@honeybear: That's a good idea! Oh man, when we get into chapter books... bedtime will last forever, lol!

I think it's about 3, unless one is really short or really long, then we will adjust accordingly.

1-3. I'm bad about waiting too late, so sometimes it's just one while she's getting her diaper changed and jammies on (one of us changes her, the other reads). But we try to always at least do that.

None. We read books a lot during the day. Bedtime is just brushing teeth, changing diaper/clothes if necessary, and then a brief cuddly chat in the glider and rocking to sleep.
Reading is really important to me, but I am glad it's decoupled from bedtime. I like the option of a short bedtime routine.
