I love reading to the kids, but only want to read one book and then kiss them goodnight. The kids prefer to hear 3 books, so I force myself to motivate for that second book... and that third book is killer! But if you don't read the books then you pay for it with a later bedtime, so that's good motivation.

I'm exactly the same as you!! E has three every night and, oh man, that last book is a killer!
I don't mind if the books are good, but E always picks books I hate - Peppa Pig books or bloody Dr Seus!

What's not to love?
We have always read three books at night, with The Going To Bed Book being last. Now that we are otherwise out of the board book stage, these books are getting long! If we are getting to bed late, she only gets one. Right now she always seems to pick a Franklin book and a Barenstein Bears book.

We only read one, and sometimes I pick it.
I am seriously considering introducing Harry Potter or some other chapter book series, but I struggle if my son is too young (5).

We have managed to cut it down to 2, and he picks. It's been the same 2 books for a few weeks now and I am so ready to move on.
@Cherrybee: My LO has yet to discover Peppa Pig, and I'm kind of hoping he never does...

We read throughout the day and I track what we do to make sure we're good on quantity and quality, but I rarely do more than one picture book or one novel chapter before calling it a day! I'm tired by bedtime.

1 for DD1 because her stories are so long now! LOL
DD2 I'm OK with 2-3 since they're so short.

We just read while he drinks his milk. Usually the same book over and over! Always about trucks.

I want to read 3 but if he chooses a long one, I'd probably do 2. We are big readers so sometimes I read him books before we go upstairs, then a few more as part of the bedtime routine. It's partly that we love books and partly because it's a way to get him to sit quietly with me!

I am on a time schedule so I have no problem reading 10 books IF we have time. I usually tell DD if we go upstairs now you can have an extra book but if we wait you only get 1.

1 would be ideal, 2 is doable and 3 is exhausting! We do 3 every night

We used to do 3 but I'm tired so now we do 2 lol i prefer 1 just because I'm tired. Any other time of day I wouldn't mind reading 3.

DD sometimes will asks to read 5+ books, but she goes through them quick (sometimes) too quick so I don't really mind, for now!

I usually don't! DH reads to DS1. I nurse DS2 down for the night!

I don't mind reading a bunch of books since they are still pretty short. We usually do 5 or 6. The killer is that he wants to read the same books every night. Curious George goes fishing may go missing soon

@mrbee: Depends on the length. I can usual stand about 10-15 minutes. So it can be 5 short books, or a whole bunch of poems, or half of a longer book... I imagine one day we'll move on to books that take weeks to finish.

She can "earn" up to five if she does bedtime without fussing. She's 3, so everything seems to be a struggle these days. Two are automatic, one for brushing teeth, one for putting on pull-up, one for putting on jammies. She had to do it all herself. She's been doing really well (it was working better than attempting to take away stories if she refused) but last night was killer. She only had 2.

We do anywhere from 1-3, depending on length.
@looch: we just started HP this past week. I'm not sure he gets it all since its fairly descriptive with a lot of detail, but I've been reading half chapters at a time and we talk about things as we read it and I kind of ask him about the highlights. He keeps telling me he wants me to read more, so we will continue for now!

My LO likes to read during her bath (often as many as 7 books) so by the time we get into her room, I'd prefer none at all. If we don't read during the bath, I'm happy to read 2-3 before bed.
