With Charlie I was in pain for 6 1/2 hours before I received my epidural. With Olive I was in pain for 2 hours before I received my epidural.
How many hours of your labor were really painful?

Three. Everything was uncomfortable but not too painful before I got to the hospital. Then my water broke as soon as we got there and the contractions were painful until she was born.

With my first I wanted the epidural at 2am and didn't get it til 11 am... So 9 hours. (They had sent me home for not progressing at 4am, I labored at home for 4 hours alone, went back to the hospital, and it took a while to get admitted, an IV in, and an anesthesiologist, etc...)
With my second, the total labor was just 6 hours, but I would say about 4 of those hours were painful.

13 hours! I was in labor for 15 but the first two hours were bearable.

I would say just a couple hours of mild pain for me when I was induced.

No labor. I had one day were I had some contractions. They definitely weren't fun so bravo to all the ladies who go through hours and hours!!

7 hours of excruciating pain...3 after I was sent home from L&D, 2 when my epidural failed at the start of transition and 2 when it failed again when I was pushing.

20 of 24 hours (6 spent in the bath) were manageable, then 2 painful, then 2 of pushing that ended in vacuum extraction - excruciating! Didn't have an epidural or any other pain relief.

Out of all 45 hours I would say the last 3 with the last 1 being incredibly difficult to bear. Mainly because I got really discouraged & my confidence plummeted. Almost immediately labor hurt more.

I was only in labor for 4 hours, so all were painful, but the last hr (6 to full dilated, right before epi + pushing) was intense.

i was in labor for 9 hours... 3 hours were mild, and 6 hours were painful. The 2 hours of transition from 7-10 cm right before I had to push were the worst. I didn't get an epi, so pushing her out was such sweet sweet relief!!

I think about 19 hrs, when I factor in how long it took me to get to 4 cm, the 2 hrs it took to get the epidural after I was admitted & requested the epidural, the time where the epidural wore off, etc. The pain management for my c-section went much better, so that was a pain free, awesome experience.

About 3 hours...I was only in labor for 9 hours though. The 3 hours immediately before my epi were the worst.

9 hours before the epidural, then 4 hours when I hit transition and pushing. I'm pretty sure the epi failed - at one point the line fell out and it wasn't right after that.

I was afraid an epidural would stop my labor, so I waited 10 hours until I was 7 cms. I should have kept waiting because it did stop my labor!

I was in labor 9 hours, the first 2.5-3 were painful, then I got the epi and got some relief, but then the last hour of pushing was intense, it was worse than the beginning contractions, the pressure was insane!

2-3 hours were painful out of the 14 total. I didn't recognize my labor until it was very active. Walking around the condo in pain was bad. Being in the waiting room and then in triage were the worst times I felt pain. I remember pacing around the waiting room just waiting to be admitted or checked out. Once in triage and monitored, I remember writhing around a lot until I was sent upstairs to be admitted. After my epidural, I felt pretty good for the remainder of my labor.

2 hours. I went from 4-10 cm in less than hour. Everything before that just felt like cramps.

I had to cope for maybe 5hrs of contractions. A couple hours before that were definitely painful, but not let's get to the hospital painful.

Almost all of them, they had to induce labor! They hooked me up to the pitocin at about nine and he wasn't born until 4:28 so I'd say at least six to seven.

The first time was about 7 hours of real intensity that I had to focus, focus, focus on breathing through. Second time was only about 2 hours. Both times minus the pushing because pushing feels dang good for me.

It's really hard to pinpoint when it actually got painful so I will just say 24 out of 48 hours the first time was really painful. The second time I was only in labor for 2- 2 1/2 hours before my c-section and the last hour to hour and a half was pretty painful (going through transition).

5 of the twelve. My labor came out of no where and my contractions were immediately 4 mins apart and lasting a full minute. The first hour of that was bearable. But the next five hours of progressing at home, driving to the hospital and waiting to be admitted suuucked until I got my epi. The epi was sweet bliss. I felt no pain and dilated so quickly after that!

I had about 24 hours of contractions that kinda built in severity but never were really anything that bad. Sometimes I'd have to stop walking for a minute but I was still walking and talking and happy.
Then my water broke and I had 7 hours of escalating oh my freaking gosh why does everything hurt, like drops of water hurt, my body went into sensitivity overdrive. Then I got an epidural and had her a couple hours later fairly pain free.

The entire night. My epidural wasn't working and I kept trying to tell the nurse, but she ignored me all night. I was thrilled to discuss that matter with her supervisor the next morning after new, fabulous nurse got me new drugs immediately!

I would say maybe 3? That's when things got real and I couldn't joke or do anything else but concentrate on surges.

The 45mins I labored at home? And those were bearable.
I got the epi waayyyy before things got bad.
I'd say the only part that hurt like hell was the last "ring of fire" 5-10mins, if that.
blogger / apricot / 427 posts
I think maybe around 3? I labored for 12 hours at home because the contractions were bearable. We got to the hospital around 12, and they were starting to get really painful at that point. I labored in the tub for a couple of hours, the Dr. broke my water and then things got really serious. I'd say excruciatingly painful for maybe the last few pushed after my water was broken.

Like 30 hours? Labor took so long I don't even know! The back labor went from "not fun" to "jackhammer in the spine" pretty quickly.
kiwi / 673 posts
I would say that probably 14 hours were painful. I may have called more of them painful when going through it, but my view of pain has since been redefined.

I was induced on a Wednesday and had my LO on Saturday morning.
6 hours Wednesday
4 hours Thursday failed induction and I went home Friday morning , then went into labor
6 hours Friday
16 hours total! I got my epidural at 9pm friday and no more pain!
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
I was in pain from about 6am until delivery the next morning at 5:15am, so almost 24 hours! Once I hit about 7-8 cm I really thought I was going to die.
Second time, I was induced and my contractions got pretty unbearable around 6-7 cm, and I got my epidural-turned-spinal pretty quickly. Then no pain at all!!
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
My entire labor was 26 hours, 1 hour of contractions before i got the epi hurt. Then the 2 hours of pushing was brutally painful (i think my epi wore off early). so 3 of the 26 hours of labor.

@PrincessBaby: im with you! id say I was in pain for about an hour. water broke at 530 am, got to.hospital around 730, had minor contractionsnot painful then got epi around 930 when I was around 5 cm, before it got to the point I couldn't take it. I was only in labor for less than 12 hours.I progressed pretty fast for a first timer the dr said.
didnt feel a thing the whole time!
