Most places make you work an extra hour and take an hour lunch, that's pretty standard, if that's the question. DH's job lets him skip lunch so he just takes two 15 min. breaks and is only there for 8 hours.

Our office is open 7:30-4:30 with an hour for lunch. Most employees do go out to lunch each day. Some of the construction guys work 7:30-4 with a 1/2 hour lunch. We also get 2-15 min(ehh its really 30 min) breaks. Its the most amount of time I've ever had an employer pay for that is not billable.
I am in office 32 hours a week and they consider me full time though I typically only bill 28-30 hours I can work through my lunch if I want or take a 2 hour lunch, I just have to bill appropriately.

7:30-4:30 with a 10 minute lunch.
But what about the work at night? There's at least an hour of that needed. I don't always do it but if I don't my day is cray cray.

I"m also in corporate accounting and now work 8-5 with a lunch break on a normal week. During month end close and during year end, I might work until 6. I REALLY want to leave this job but the hours are so good that it'll be hard to find something with the same hours requirement. I've got a higher title but am not trying to climb the ladder right now since it's more important for me to pick up my boys since DH's commute is longer. Pre-kids, I was working a ton of hours since the company I was previously at was sort of a mess.

I work a 35/hour week full time job (public higher education) and my hours are supposed to be 8:30am-4:30pm. While that's what's on paper and the minimum required in my contract, it's pretty much the norm that my staff and I work closer to 45-50 on a weekly basis.

@Corduroy: wait, whaaaattt?? Is that even legal??? A 10 minute lunch??
clementine / 995 posts
It depends. I am in corporate accounting. When we are not busy I work 35-40 hours. During quarter-close it can be 50-60 hours per week.

It's super flexible, but I'm mostly in the office for 8 hours/day, 5 days/week. Basically, people come in between 8am-10am, and leave between 4pm-6pm. I tend to work through lunch, but lots of people take a break/go out. No one is tracking anyone's hours. As long as you get your work done and are generally available when someone is looking for you, you're good.
ETA: it's a European company (in the US). Not sure if it's a cultural thing or not. Also, we have offices all over the world, so you may need to come in early or leave late for a meeting occasionally due to the time differences.

I said 41-45 but on the days I'm in the office I try to arrive by 7:30, work through lunch, and leave by 3:30-3:45. On my WAH days I'll often work longer than 8 hours. I'm in IT consulting.
pomegranate / 3565 posts
I chose less than 40 though technically it's supposed to be 40. I'm salary so there isn't any clocking in/out. Most days I get to work around 8:15 and leave at 4:30. I usually eat a quick lunch. Prior to being pregnant, I would eat leftovers and have at max a 30 minute lunch - that's how I leave at 4:30. But lately I leave for lunch to pick something up. So now I'm probably here less than my 8 hours a day. When I interviewed I made it pretty clear flexibility was super important to me because I have small children. It hasn't been a problem - very fortunate to have a family friendly boss and working environment.

Exactly 40. My schedule is 8:30 to 4:30. Of course my commute is almost an hour so it feels longer! I work in insurance and this schedule is very typical in my industry but not many people are allowed to wfh or any flexibility really because it is very old school and male dominated

I work in medicine. I have 32 hours per week scheduled with patients and then admin time. That alone adds up to about 40 hours. I also round at the hospital and am on call for deliveries which can be 1-5 more hours per week most of the time.

It's so interesting to me to hear so many of you that are able to leave work at 4:30 or 5, that take hour long lunch breaks, etc.!
When I was working before LO I typically was in the office 9-6:30. Some days later. I would get up and work early in the morning then get ready and get to the office at about 9. I worked through lunch or had lunch meetings. Maybe once every two weeks I would go out for lunch and usually stay extra late to get everything done. And I often worked from home in the evenings and on the weekends.
It's the same for DH. He actually works longer days. He usually gets to work at about 8 and stays until 6-6:30. Some days later. And he works from home in the evenings and on the weekends. He does take a lunch but I think it is 20-30 minutes.
It's like this for most people I know in traditional white collar jobs! Just yesterday we went to a holiday event with friends of DH's from work. They were all busting tail to get out of there "early," by 5.

Wow I can't keep up with all these responses to be clear, I am super happy with my new job. Although I was a little bummed about 9 hrs in-office (I was hoping for 8.5 with half hr lunch), I think this is really as good as it gets in law and my employer seems extremely nice and understanding about my wanting work-life balance.
The comment my friend made was more about my having turned down a job that was 50ish hrs per week saying that is just the norm these days. I think it IS the norm in law (which is why I'm so grateful for the job I got) but I didn't think it was the norm generally.

@wrkbrk: I ended up taking a staff attorney position. Only way to get the sort of hours I was looking for. The firm seems more family friendly than most big firms though.

I work part time so I'm answering for my DH-- he is generally "in the office" 55 hours a week.
honeydew / 7444 posts
When I go to the office I am there from 8 to 4 and I don't take a lunch (chow down in 15 min). But I will do some work at night for maybe 1-2 hours, depending on how swamped I am. When I work from home, I will work start my day earlier (sometimes 6 or 7) with some breaks to get the kids ready. But I always sign off at 4.
I technically have a 40 hour workweek but probably put in something closer to 45-50 on average.
grapefruit / 4545 posts
I work in finance....my normal day is 7:30-5, then I usually have a handful of conference calls that take some more hours. A normal "slow" week is probably 50-55. At Month Ends and Quarter Ends I easily hit 70-80hrs a week (especially quarter ends). So I said 55+.
DH works in law, white collar criminal defense. He bills 35-40 hrs a week, plus admin time and what not...he is easily 45-50 per week. However, he also is "on call" I'd say 100%. Meaning - if there is a crisis on a non work time...he works. So he'd also probably average 55-60 hours a week.

@Mae: Oh ok! I hope you like it! Normally firms don't care if you leave at 4 everyday as long as you meet your minimum hours. Good luck!!

I am in the office 9-5ish. However, I work through lunch pretty much everyday and often end up getting to work 15-30 minutes early and/or staying 15-30 minutes late. Probably once a week or so, I do a little more work when I get home, and rarely I do a lot more work at home. I voted 41-45 hours in the office.

@wrkbrk: thanks I hope I like it too. My last job (pre baby) was a very small firm so this will be totally different. I am definitely hoping it is mostly about my billables, however I choose to do them. But they are already making accommodations to let me work an earlier adjusted schedule so I don't want to push it lol

I'm full time but I'm in the office more like 30 hours a week. I have the option to telecommute, which is basically the emails I read/respond to in the evenings and weekends. It's kind of a hush hush situation my boss set up for me after having kids. No one actually cares if I check email outside the office but I do it out of habit and my personal desire to stay on top of things haha.

I have worked at two relatively high profile places in my field (archival work) and in both places the salaried workers worked 8-5 or 7-4, both with hour-long lunches. But it's definitely a field where the higher up you're placed, the more out-of-office work is involved (usually dinners, events, and emails).
grapefruit / 4355 posts
I guess technically my jobs have had me "in office" for 45 hours because I work 40 hours (full time) and am given an hour to take lunch. Lunch doesn't count towards working hours though.
ETA: these jobs were in regulatory affairs at a medical device company and in academic research.
nectarine / 2690 posts
I work 8 hours a day plus an hour for lunch so I am at the office 45 hours a week. Add in two hours of commute and I'm gone for at least 11 hours a day.
persimmon / 1436 posts
I work 8-5 4 days a week and 11-8 the other. I always take my full hour lunch. It is a union professional job (librarian). I have to rearrange my schedule sometimes to accommodate an evening event.
nectarine / 2210 posts
I work 8-5 each day with an hour lunch. I normally take the full hour especially since I don't get paid anymore for taking less. And while it doesn't take me an hour to eat, but I spend that time running errands or reading.
pear / 1586 posts
I work 7:30/8-4. I eat at my desk 2-3 times a week and go out to lunch the other days; many of which are to some degree working lunches with my colleagues. I also do work at night and/or on the weekends as needed. I work in academic research.

I'm a CPA working in corporate accounting at a very fast paced company. During my slow time (~10 weeks a year), I work around 40 hours a week. The rest of the year I work 50-60 hours per week.

My hours vary as to start times, but I have to be in by 9. I work until 5:30, with an hour break. Most people take about an hour in my department.
My office offers flex lunches, where you can take an hour and half lunch and make up for it at the end of the day. I never do it, it's mostly for people that work out during lunch or go home for lunch.
pomelo / 5257 posts
I am in the office 9-5, and I rarely eat lunch away from my desk. So 40 hours. Although fairly often, on Fridays at around 3:30 or 4, my boss will say, "let's all go home now!" So that's nice I do sometimes do some work on the weekend though, so it probably balances out.
pineapple / 12526 posts
It varies. I generally work 8:30- 5:15/5:30. So about 45 hours a week. I work in purchasing/corporate sales.

I'm a BigLaw attorney and I work in the office 5days/week 8-8:30-5 then at home from 8-10pm. I had to go "part time" and take a 20% pay cut to be able to reliably leave at 5 and only do a couple of hours over the weekend.
I love the work I do, but I'm (unofficially) off partner track while I'm part time and don't think the late evening hours are going to be sustainable on my marriage so I'm starting to look for something new. I've basically resigned myself to leaving law since I can't handle the bureaucracy of government jobs (many of which are more than full time) and in-house work is rare in my field.

I am not working FT now but my most recent FT job I would normally work from about 8-5:30. It was frowned upon by some that I left so early but I also arrived hours before those people. My job was in the finance sector so quarterly and year-end were much busier with meetings running until 8-9pm and all weekends too. There were working moms that would leave early aka before 6 but they were still expected to at least work evenings at home. The hours at that job were SO much better than my previous job. Some industries I think you have to be "part time" in order to only work 9-5. So sad
pomelo / 5789 posts
I usually work 9-4 most days and 9-2 once a week with an hour lunch. So about 30-32 hours?
Hours are only tracked to projects to as long as I hit 32 hours a week I hit my target.
It's not tracked as far as which days or what times I work.
I work as a consultant for a large tech company.
