Since we stopped using playtext drop ins, I've realized I miss the fact that they had less parts to wash.. The new bottles we are using (playtex ventaire) have 6 parts including the cap. These are the parts: The bottle , the nipple, nipple ring, screw on bottom, silicone vent, cap.

We have gone through three sets of bottles and they all drive me crazy.
Breastflow - 5 parts
(outer nipple, inner nipple, ring, bottle, cap) - the harder plastic of the inner nipple kept cracking so we stopped using these.Dr. Browns - 6 parts
(nipple, ring, brown vent piece, blue tube vent thingy, bottle, cap)Avent - 5 parts
(nipple, inner ring, ring, bottle, cap)I switched from the Dr Browns to the Avent because I hated that the Dr. Browns were so tricky to wash. I wash all our bottles by hand every night, and I hated the little holes and stuff that required the pipe cleaner thingy to get them clean, in addition to the bottle brush and nipple cleaner.

Tommee Tippee- 4 parts
Bottle, nipple, nipple ring and lid. We rarely use bottles though so I don't need to wash them often. -
Funny - we use the Ventaire too, and yesterday I found myself counting the number of pieces in each bottle (6) and multiplying that by the number of bottles I was washing (7).

mOmma has three: bottle, nipple, cap.
When we used Avent, DH would sometimes forget to put the little ring in and there would be a huge waste of milk.

I also have the Dr. Brown's and all the nooks and cranies drive me crazy! I handwash at night.

Our Avent system only had the nipple, ring and bottle. There wasn't a second inner ring.

Born free have 6 parts, it does get annoying washing all of them!

We were using Dr Browns and all their million parts, busere itched to Comotomo bottles and are pretty happy! Only 3 parts and no need for special brushes to get in tiny crevices.

@crash806: Everyone said that we'd forget about sterilizing stuff with our second child, so I figured I'd save myself the hassle with my first as well. We only sterilized stuff when we first got them (bottles, pacifiers, etc...) by boiling them for 10 minutes or so. After that we just washed it by hand.

@mrstilly: My SIL is pretty lazy when it comes to some parenting stuff -love her but she is!- sterilizing is surprisingly one of the things she still does even with #2, 7 years later.
I don't know, everyone in my family sterilizes so it's never something I considered not doing. -
We're Dr. Browns too! I hate washing them but I love the bottles so... eh. Oh well. She won't be using them forever.

This might be a dumb question, but can you just throw everything into the sterilizer to wash it?

@regberadaisy: I'm bad, I only sterilized when we got them. I hand wash and run them under our stupidly hot tap water every time I wash though.

@zippylef: I think technically you only need to sterilize the first time around.
That's what 99% of people do.

@eiko2010: when I'm in a time crunch I rinse in cold water then throw into the sterilizer. But I wouldn't do that all the time because I find it doesn't get all the oils out.

We use the Medela bottles and they only have 3 parts! 4 if you include the nipple cap.

The bottles we have the most of have 3 parts (not counting a cap). We also have some Playtex Ventaire that have 5 parts without the cap. Even though they have a lot of parts, I prefer the Playtex over other brands.

I only just starting using these bottles and only sterilized them in the beginning. Actually I think I may have only sterilized the nipples and the vents. Is that wrong? thats what it said to do in the insructions.
I usually just hand wash everything.

3 (not counting the cap. We used Tommee Tippee and it was just the bottle, the nipple, and the ring.
@eiko2010: not really. I mean you could, but then you risk "cooking" the milk or formula on there and its hard to get off. Like someone else said, the oils dont come off that way either. You want to wash it before you sterilize.
@Mrsbells: I seterilized the bottles as well. Ours had some dust and cardboard sediment in them from the box and packaging, but Im sure its fine to not. I also just handwashed everything, and sterilized like once a month.
