@Silva: I got my first loan repayment grant during fellowship, which paid $64k. It was sponsored by the NIH for people doing pediatric research.
After fellowship, I took a job at an institution that has a loan repayment benefit of 20k/ yr in a competitive process. This program paid off the remainder of my loans in March. When I was looking for jobs, I only looked at jobs that had loan repayment because otherwise I'd be paying loans until I was almost 60!

I hate to put this in writing, but we have $57k in debt (excluding our mortgage) all student loans.

@Mrs. Jacks: I think a lot of the jobs he will be looking at offer some. There will also be some opportunity for some federal loan repayment because he will be doing primary care in a "high needs" area (our whole state qualifies, I believe). I'm just anxious about how large our monthly loan payments will be when we first start out (and need to replace cars, move, etc). Oy.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
@Silva: if he qualifies for some, you can call the loan servicer and they will reduce the amount of your payment commensurate with how much his program is paying. Most people don't know you can do that! It took my payment down from $600/mo to $130 a month :). You have to call to get the adjustment though!

70k in student loans and about 11k in car debt. I used to be embarrassed about it but eff it.
persimmon / 1361 posts
Sooo much debt here! A little under $200k in student loans (MD) and about $15k on our car. We also own 2 condos (each owned one prior to meeting) that have mortgages (we rent them out) and our house mortgage. We are special

@Mrs. Jacks: You'd think that I could, since we're an underserved area, but the state cut back grants for the primary care physicians and pediatricians to practice here. Honestly, I'd rather pay back my loans over the next thirty years and have the state continue giving incentives for primary care. The continuity of care for children in the rural areas (which is basically the entire state) is appalling.

About 90K left in student loans (2/3 of which are mine) to pay. That's it. (But it's a lot and it sucks).
persimmon / 1343 posts
Not counting the mortgage, we are about $75k in debt, most of that being student loans and the rest being our car, and a plumbing loan(had to get our pipes replaced last year). I really envy those without debt, but to be fair DH and I are both 25 and I think we are doing alright considering our debt lol. It is annoying, but manageable payments and we should have our student loans paid off in 2019 :x

About 80K, mostly student loans. I consolidated at 2%, make the payments, and I'm not really concerned about it. I wanted to go to law school. It's a cost of living and allows me to earn my salary.

@DillonLion: Ugh ... So much! Minimum cc debt (like $2,000), but we have a car payment, medical bills, and our student loans. About $80K. The student loans are the biggest chunk.

Professional school debt (DH) and a car payment with 20 months left
GOLD / nectarine / 2884 posts
Hubs has 90k (JD) and I will have 15k soon, but I'm not panicked. DH is on a IBRP and I am going to Ed. school so they can be forgiven. Plus with me earning a second income (fx) after I graduate I think it will be more than worth it for me to go back. Right now we scrape by on DH's salary so ideally we would continue to do that and my salary could go toward the debt for a few years. Fx of course!

DH and I are both lawyers, so we had a LOT of law school loans when we got married - literally like a mortgage on a single family house. And we did not go to school when the interest rates were low.
However, we've paid off over 40% of our loans in the last 3 years by living on like 30% of our income. DH and I both work full time and he also runs his own law practice from home. We carry no other debt and we stick to a strict budget. So while the balance on our loans is still wicked high (now its like owning a condo), I'm proud of us for making so much progress. Things will slow down now that I'm going on maternity leave, but we just paid off my smallest law school loan last month, so my monthly payment will be smaller.
Seriously, we will be SO happy when these stupid loans are done!

I am super surprised at how many of you don't have car payments! That seems unusual for everyone I know! We could pay off my student loan and car but the interest rates are so low that it doesn't make sense. Better to keep that money invested and earning...so I don't feel like we are in debt. Just balancing our money.

Just under $6K left on student loans. Could pay it off easily right now but with buying a house, I'd rather keep that money in my pocket and use it on house related things. I have such a ridiculously low interest rate on it, it will be the absolute last thing I throw extra money towards, besides the normal payments of course!

@Espion: I have several friends working their as pediatricians, FPs or sub-specialists, so I definitely have gotten a sense of just how bad the shortage is. Especially when you are talking some of the islands where you can't even fly out depending on weather!

Not really sure. I think "my" credit card from before we were married is up to 10k. Yikes! But we use it jointly if we need to put something on a US credit card. And then I don't even know how much in student loans I still have. DH has no student loans, but he's paying mine off ::cringe:: I give him money to help when I can from the cash I make. But if I'd had to guess, I'd say I still have almost if not 20k left on that. So, around 30k all together? Oy.

@Mrs. Jacks: that's what I am doing too to pay off my loans. Well worth it!!

Wow, I'm shocked at how many are debt free... must be nice (sigh). Dh and I have made major headway over the past 5 years and although we aren'd debt free I'm pretty happy with where we are now! As of now our debt consists of 2 car loans (total $12k), 2 student loans (total $15k) and about $1k credit cards.... so $28k
And for the record I don't think having "debt" should be looked at as "bad" per se.... we all know there is good debt and bad debt. Unless you were very fortunate in life I don't see how you can get through without incurring some debt along the way. So don't be embarrassed if you have some debt...

Debt free except for our house, which we hope to have paid off in the next 10 years. We would like to build our next house with cash. No more debt for us ever.

I have close to 100K in law school loans, but without those loans my earning potential would be much lower, so I don't look at those as a bad thing (even though it breaks my heart to pay them each month!). We have one car payment but I'm not sure how much is left on it...maybe 9-10K?
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
Besides mortgage, like $23K - that's DH's student loans & our car that we've only owned for not even a year so we still have a while to pay off. His student loans are under $10K so majority is the car.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@Ajsmommy: I agree, that when debt is used as part of your overall strategy, it isn't a bad thing...it's just something that we're not really taught how to use in that sense.
clementine / 880 posts
we're debt free except for mortgages, except we have 5 mortgages because we own 4 rental properties and our house.... so it's a LOT of mortgage debt. All the rental properties make more than enough rent income to cover the debt though.
Also - we don't have any car debt but we're going to donate my 210k+ mile junker and buy a (used) car in January before my March due date for the baby. Don't want to buy one before January because we want to pay property tax on my old junker instead of the new car and that's based on what car you own Jan 1st.

We have a 0 percent interest solar water heater loan for 2 k but that is it!
pineapple / 12802 posts
We have 20K in tax debt which we are slowly paying down.
Besides that, it's just our mortgage.
