@mediagirl: @Mrs. Twine: Just makes me sad/full of rage. I remember when we set up a payment plan for our L&D, and I looked at DD and told her she was the most expensive thing I've ever pushed out of my vagina.

$750 copay for hospital, plus probably another $150 for the epidural and the circumcision.
eggplant / 11824 posts
Over $3k. I'm not really sure how much exactly; I just shut my eyes and handed over my credit card.
Some of our expenses were not "normal" (i.e., heart specialist visits for LO before and after birth)

@locavore_mama: We have a zero deductible plan with no copays. It's fantastic!
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Um, I'm in my own category here. We paid just over $5K in copays all-in. We got an $1,800 bill for me, $2,900 for DS and a couple of individual Dr. bills for $300, $100, etc.
Until now I thought I had good insurance lol!

$1200 but that also had LO's NICU stuff, I'm not sure what the breakdown was for me vs her! I also received a check back from my OB after delivering beause I "overpaid" (i prepaid each month.) So it was really $600.

It cost me 50$ because our benefits only covered a semi-private room and I wanted private!
kiwi / 673 posts
We paid "$0" for actual labor and delivery... only because we had already met our $3,500 deductible and $6,500 OOP max for the year. It was a rough year.

$250 copay for L&D
$250 copay for E's 7 day hospital stay in Special Care.
pear / 1769 posts
$25 copay for all prenatal visits. Just over $2k for L&D and stay after. LO and I have different insurances, though, so her bills were higher.

Just got some insight from Wagon Sr. ... We paid a $280 copay for delivery, $0 for all pre and postnatal care. No copays for well child visits either. With the better insurance with my first, we did have well child visit copays.
We always have stellar insurance because one or both of us has always worked in a non-profit. Less pay but great benefits.

Probably 6k total - already met my individual 2k deductible for this year and we just started a new plan year which I added DH on to so now the deductible is 4k. It's going to depend on your plan though. L&D is covered 100% after the deductible with no benefit limitation.

$0. But we did upgrade to a private room, which should have cost us $1000 out of pocket, but we were never billed (private insurance at $200 per month).

WOW! I am just amazed at the good insurance some of you have. We don't have a LO yet, but I *thought* we had good insurance (DH's work - state university employee). We have a $500 deductible, then it's they pay 80%, we pay 20% until we hit $5,000 OOP. I was in the hospital for 4 days last yer and had surgery and we paid about $2000 after it was all said and done.
The insurance through my work (which I don't have, I'm on DH's) is HORRIBLE. Like $5,000 deductible and $15,000 OOP. And I work at a non-profit so a lot of employees, especially people like secretaries, make peanuts. It makes me sad thinking about those people who are stuck using that health plan for their family. I know a lot of people who work there who can't afford to go to the doctor.

@mrs. wagon: I think the lack of co pays for well child visits is an Obamacare thing, at least, that is what my HR told me.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@plantains: yes! I think so too... unfortunately we had to switch plans for the upcoming year because our monthly payment skyrocketed. But the new plan is supposedly just as widely accepted and Wagon Sr.'s coworkers all said it was fine.

@mediagirl: @deerylou: Jumping on the paid an arm and a leg (and everything else) wagon.
Seriously...if we paid less than $1k, I'd feel like I won the lottery. I have a unhealthy rage when I think about how much I paid while being employed, insured, and 'doing everything right'...

Yay for Canada! I did have to pay $40 for my private room though, but that was it

I am in the U.S.
Total cost of all prenatal care (ultrasounds and testing including) + labor and delivery was $150. Zero deductible.

I'm wondering how monthly insurance payments factor into all of this? We pay quite a bit per month for an HMO... there are 4 of us, but still, we pay a good amount for a good plan. I guess different companies pay different amounts per plan? I don't know ANYTHING about health insurance.
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@mrs. wagon: I think we pay about $275/month for a family plan (this won't change as our family grows, luckily). It seems like a lot, but we have EXCELLENT insurance, so it is worth every penny.
apricot / 431 posts
We ended up paying around €200 for L&D, insurance premium is €100 a year. But that's without all the prenatal check-ups, I'm guessing those cost us at least another €200 total. Without insurance, the whole thing would have cost us around €1500 I think.
blogger / watermelon / 14218 posts
@septca: we pay much, much more than that!! is that per month or per pay period?
apricot / 431 posts
@plantains: what's a well child visit? Is it like a check-up for a child that's not actually sick?
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@mrs. wagon: Per month... It's $136/pay period, I think. (It comes out of my husband's pay check so I am not sure the exact amount.)
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@mrsvdv: Well child are the scheduled appointments (1 month, 1 month, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, etc.). Ours are free, but we pay a copay for sick visits or anything else (for example, we paid more in copays for newborn weight checks than I paid for L&D. Sigh.)

$0.00
I didn't even have to pay for my private room because my husbands cousin is a L&D nurse and hooked me up with sweet digs!
blogger / pomegranate / 3201 posts
@locavore_mama: I paid zero and am in the US. I'm a public school teacher and my insurances covers all L&D and maternity care (and everything for the child until he/she is 7 years old).
GOLD / pomegranate / 3688 posts
@jedeve: $275 is what *we* pay, so I guess - yes - after employer contribution.

@mrs. wagon: Nothing comes out of my paycheck for our HMO for all three of us (I'm a teacher).
cantaloupe / 6791 posts
Wow this is depressing. We're going to be paying nearly $3000 for l&d after over $1000 for OB office visits. We pay $500/month in premiums.
Another reason why being a teacher in my state sucks.
pear / 1787 posts
Please don't automatically be jealous of those of us in the U.S. who paid $0. Some have great insurance, as some PPs have shared, but some of us (including me, I'm brave enough to admit it) have such low income that we qualify for the state insurance. I am extremely grateful for and humbled by it, and would much rather be in a different financial situation even if it meant I had to pay.
apricot / 431 posts
@septca: that's what I thought, thanks! In Belgium, we can choose to have these scheduled appointments at the consultation bureau where they are free (i.e. payed for by the government = tax money) or with a doctor/pediatrician who will charge the standard rate for a visit.
persimmon / 1081 posts
Zero for prenatal care, $700 for L&D. We had a private recovery room (all rooms are private, so we didn't pay for anything extra). We could have gone with a lower ranked hospital and paid $300.
