Wow this is all good to know -- got me thinking and now I need to go research what my payments will look like!

Zero, my work has excellent health plans that they pay fully for all employees.

TIL I need to have my next baby in Canada. Or any other country other than the US.
We paid just over $3K for me (deductible + whatever percent after that insurance didn't cover. Then because of a misunderstanding on my part we had to pay for all of E's out of pocket, which was another $2400 or so. Bleh.

@DigAPony: That's a good point. I feel like we should all be able to access health care that doesn't but a huge strain on families regardless of income!
nectarine / 2522 posts
$0 and that's Without using health insurance. I never realized how good the public health system was in Australia compared to the US until I came on HB. Super grateful.

Nothing so far and I'm 29 weeks. At my first visit they told me my insurance will pay 80% leaving me with $525 out of pocket for my share. That includes all appointments and hospital stay. I don't see that happening. I haven't received a bill yet though. I'm sure after LO is born we will get a nice surprise amount in the mail!
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
@jedeve: @DigAPony: Exactly! Thankful for state government insurance for those who need it but it's a large gap between $0 and $5,000 to pay for a pregnancy/delivery.
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
$0, thank you military health... and now we'll never have another after seeing the shocking #s above.
If we have #2, it will be $10,000 + 20% of the rest. Ouch.

Nothing so far the only thing I think we have to pay is the circumcision and that $270 I'm on DH insurance and it's great we're in florida

$200 co pay for hospital(1 night stay - vaginal birth) and $0 for prenatal care.
blogger / coconut / 8306 posts
I had a $250 co-pay for the deliver and a $500 or $600 bill from the hospital. All pre-natal care was $0, though I did have to pay full price for all bloodwork and ultrasounds, then 10%.
We met our deductible and OOP max throughout my pregnancy, so we paid around $3,000 for everything.
papaya / 10560 posts
You have to pay 50% of deductible at my obs office by 28th week, so that was $1500 before baby. I have a HD plan, the reducible is 3000, so we will get billed at least 1500 more I'm sure for l & d and then max out of pocket is 3000. Our premium is 320/month to carry ds and I.

We've already been billed nearly $2000 and I'm only 18wks. We pay $250/mo for our BlueCross/BlueShield insurance, and that's after employer covers the bulk. But we'll figure it out. I can't think of anything more worthwhile to spend our money on (or go into debt for).
clementine / 984 posts
My current ins. through work covers all my prenatal needs, so zero cost there. However, insurance drops Jan 1, so I'll go on an individual BCBS plan, but my OOP is going to be $1,800. Not too awful, especially compared to what the total family OOP is if I were to go on DH's plan. Yay for the ACA (at least in our case).

About $300 for each of them.
Our monthly insurance payment is $165.
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
We were on an HMO plan and I paid $10/appointment for prenatal care and 3wk and 6wk pp checkups and $0 for LDR. $10 I think for zofran (generic.) $50 or $75 for ER visit for PPD, $10 for follow up, $70 total for meds. I don't know if that stuff counts, but it was necessary for me..
Eta however I did not get to go to the hospital or dr I wanted...and all the stuff that goes with hmos.

@mrs. wagon: Yes, I think it just depends on how much of teh premium the employer is willing to cover. For example, my employer covers the full cost of the premium for my PPO which was around $2000 per month for the 2012-2013 year although I have no idea what it is at the moment.

About $1200 for DS, but mostly because I had a private room.
I think we will be around €600 for DD, again, because of the private room. I also stayed 4 nights with her and only 2 with DS.

pregnant and delivered all in the same plan year, all doc visits+l/d = $1250

I spent about $2000 for the maternity coverage over 12 months , and then my deductible of $2500. If I hadn't had to have a c-section, it would have been much less because I wouldn't have had to touch my deductible. And then I had a $50 copay for every ultrasound (3) and another $150 for the room. So right around $4800?

@FarmWifeGina: That's a REALLY good cost from your midwife. Our midwife is about $4,500, but insurance pays for 70% ... Did your midwife do a 'deal' because you were paying 100%?
pomegranate / 3917 posts
Nothing, and extended employer coverage paid for the upgrade to the private room!
pear / 1571 posts
@Vegmama: No deal because none of her clients are able to get insurance to cover their births. But when you ask what she charges, she says she does it as a ministry and will take whatever a family can afford to give her, although $1,000 is what she suggests. But we knew what other people pay her and that this is what she does for a living, so we paid about the median amount in the range that others seem to pay. Yeah, she's a lay midwife and the best we can do in our state that is backwards in all manner of alternative health care.

$10 total, my insurance covered the rest.
HOWEVER, I'm still fighting a genetic test that my insurance only covers partially that the company is trying to charge my $1000 out of pocket for. pfff.
nectarine / 2177 posts
$0 for L&D in the US. DH had great insurance. We changed our timeline for having a baby because of it. Otherwise we wouldn't have tried to get pregnant when we did!
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
@locavore_mama: I didn't pay zero, but I only paid $150 total on the federal goverment's blue cross blue shield basic plan. It covered 100% of prenatal coverage including all my high risk appointments and ultrasounds and then it was $150 for delivery and hospital stay. We did have to pay more for the boys' time in the NICU, but if they had come home when I did it would have just been $150 total.

I was single when I got pregnant, then married and broke halfway through pregnancy. So, we were on state healthcare. It covered everything.
Health insurance baffles me. I do not understand why insurance is so expensive and yet people are still expected to pay THOUSANDS of dollars out of pocket. We teeter on the edge of eligibility for low cost care, but we would drown if we had to pay full premiums.
apricot / 358 posts
$50 for the hospital stay.
$400 for a doula (including placenta encapsulation.)
pomegranate / 3706 posts
Seriously what insurance do you all have?! We are both self-employed and pay $8k a year in premiums alone (that number is going up next month thanks to Obamacare), and we still ended up paying around $8k out of pocket for prenatal and labor and delivery- for a vaginal, uncomplicated birth. Makes me wonder what our premiums are paying for. Sucks we're about to do that again.
cherry / 115 posts
Have insurance but doesn't cover maternity.
I think we paid about 7k for baby out of pocket.
pear / 1823 posts
I paid $25 for my first OB visit and that was it for the whole pregnancy. My job had great health insurance. Now that I'm a SAHM, any future pregnancies will be covered by my husband's plan which is not as good. Oh well, at least #1 was free
persimmon / 1128 posts
$15 total, and that covered my first OB visit through my 6-week postpartum appointment. Total bill was $20K+.
@mrs. wagon: HMO for four of us is a $1,300/month premium. My employer {state education} covers $750/month. It's steep, but it's very good insurance.
squash / 13208 posts
We have Tricare and our yearly OOP is 3k -I had already paid for other doctor visits for the kids and then I paid my OB $500 and so I think my C/S ended up costing around $2200. Not bad considering the total bill was $25K!
