We skipped setting up nurseries, buying a crib, etc. because I didn't think it was necessary and wanted to save the money for their toddler/big kid rooms.
We're building our forever home and I'm looking at twin sized beds that the kids will use until they're off to college.
This is the bed that my 2.5 yo said she wants (is it just me, or should 2.5 yo's not have an opinion on stuff like this?!) Was thinking about getting the entire set--bed, nightstand and dresser.

The only purchase for his room was his twin bed and some new sheets. Currently it's on the floor, and we might get a cheap low bed frame from Ikea. I don't think he needs it, but DH would like something nicer.

That being said, IDK if a fabric covered headboard will last from 2.5 to 18 y.o? That's a lot to ask, and I know my siblings and I all switched to a Queen bed by the time we were in Jr. High?
The dresser and night-stand look classic - I'm sure those will last forever! I kind of splurged on K's dresser and night-stand with the intention of her using them for a very long time since they are quality pieces built to last. I'd probably spend ~$500 for a big girl bed someday.

@chopsuey: Well, mine was my Grandma's hand-me-down - no headboard or anything. My sister and brother went through many, many beds with all their monkey-jumping antics.

That is a really pretty bed! I voted under $500. My SIL's family runs a furniture wholesale company, so we got my DD's bed at cost. Aside from that she only has two shelves, and a beanbag and rug for her reading nook. So far we haven't needed any bureaus, etc because she has a large walk in closet. I want to get her some big girl (non-Dora) bedding but haven't seen anything we like yet.

Gorgeous! I want to move into her room
I've been shopping sales for the past year since we started TTC #2, so much of it is half price or less from Ikea. So far we are $60 for toddler bed, $80 for mattress, $20 for a rug, $6 for curtains, $30 for bedding, and around $100 for a dresser. So far around $300 and we don't need much more. Wall art, I may get a sports decal or two, and want to make most of his wall decorations.

We are also shopping for a twin size bed for DS that hopefully will last through when he leaves home. We definitely won't buy a bedroom set though. I didn't vote because I have found such wide price ranges and we haven't yet decided.

Since you saved on their newborn/baby furniture, it's your time to splurge without guilt and inhibitions!

I would think about a queen if you want it to last that long. That way she has more room once she gets older and she can have a friend sleepover.

I would think it will probably be $500-600. We already have all the furniture (my parents kept my white, iron twin bed, just need mattresses)so it'll just be bedding, paint and accessories.

Nothing yet as a toddler. Still in her convertible crib (goes to full later) as the toddler bed and her room is still team green baby designed. LOL I'm going to change it up soon, but not sure how. I guess I could just ask her.lol

Our big expenses were the full sized mattress ($600) and the headboard/footboard ($600). Then the bedding was another $300.
The rest of the furniture is actually mine from when I was growing up, so we saved a lot there.

We will likely spend less than $500, it's a ways away though. His crib converts to a toddler bed so he'll probably be in that until he's 4-5.
We might invest in a PBK bed though, the wood ones are super nice.
We might splurge for a natural mattress too... undecided on that.

When we upgrade her to a big girl room, I want to get her solid wood furniture. There are LOTS of furniture stores here in NC so we have lots to choose from. I don't mind spending a little bit of money on solid wood since I know it stands up to the test of time.

Oh my gosh, I looooove this bed! I've seen it in the catalog and thought I'd love to have this bed for A's room. (or one of those kick-ass raised beds that look like a little castle or fort - haha, I'm crazy!). That being said, I agree with @shopaholic on the fabric part. I slept in a twin until I was 18 so I don't think that's a big deal. I'd be more worried about white and if the fabric was treated/coated to make it easy to clean. If it is, then I'd go for it.
For the dresser and end table, I'd suggest taking some trips to a furniture store first as well as visiting PBK to check on the quality of this. We did this and ended up getting our set from Jordan's Furniture. It's meant for adults so it's a bit bigger, but it was really well made and sturdy. We thought it would last longer this way.
BTW, I have a purple tulip and white tulle canopy I got from PBK and it is hung over A's crib. I also safety pinned a butterfly mobile underneath (I got this off etsy) and it is STUNNING. Something like this would look awesome over that bed. Just sayin'.

That's a beautiful bed and I really think that considering her opinion will make her room more special to her. We haven't gotten to that stage yet, but I can't wait.

I wouldn't mind spending $ on a quality bedroom set. $2,000 is a big upfront cost, but if it'll last 16+ years, I think that's a worthy investment.
I'm just not sure if I can commit to furniture for that long! Haha. I'd rather spend less and not feel bad if I want to get something new in a few years.

I was in a twin until I bought my own mattress in.college (after dorms), I will put J in a twin as well.
Love that set but also agree that it would be hard to keep clean over time.

I plan on buying quality furniture that the kids will use until they go to college, we are skipping twin bed and going straight to a full. I had a full growing up and can't imagine having a small twin.

Um, not much. Like $200 on bedding, $200 on wall art (plus from his nursery we had a Land of Nod light up globe of the earth), and my parents insisted that we take my old bed, mattress (it's actually new - was in their guest room) and dresser. We plan on getting him a new bedroom set for his 5th birthday and it'll be around $1500.
