DD's birthday is coming up in a few months and 1st birthdays are pretty big in our family. I'm trying to budget and see what my options are. I am leaning strongly to having it at the zoo. We'll probably have around 50 people (including kids - maybe 15). What did you all do and how much did you spend?

We saved our extra cash for about 6 months and made that our budget for the party. First birthdays are a pretty big deal and we probably spent a little under $1000 (most of it going towards food for guests, a chinese/japanese buffet) which I thought was a very reasonable budget considering our guest list (about 50).

I guessed @ $500-750, we made a lot of the food but we also had spent a lot on decor, flowers, DIY invite supplies, her outfit, furniture, etc.

Growing up in my family, birthdays weren't a super big deal and they tended to be very low-key. I don't plan on doing much of anything for the baby (they won't remember it after all), but I'm always impressed by other parents' plans. Lucky kids!

It'll be about 25 people at our house. I'm making pretty much everything. I already made tons of tissue paper flowers, and used things I had around the house as vases. I bought some stuff at the dollar store for decorations and plates, etc. I found favors for the kids on sale during easter (it's garden themed so I took advantage of all the flowery things) and I'm making cookies for the adult favors. So really all I have to buy is stuff to make food.

It's still a ways off but I'm already thinking about it! Def DIY, I want to make her cake every year. Including the smash cake. It'll be at home since our new home is decent size and great for entertaining.
@Minnie_Girl: It's funny because birthdays were not a big thing growing up . But for me that's exactly why I want to make it a big deal for our kids

We had about 22 people at my LO's party and had it at a nice restaurant..
food + DIY decorations + cake + favors + flowers + fruit (korean tradition) totaled about 1800? -
We will probably spend $1000, mostly on food though since we have large families. We are actually hosting a
1 month party in a couple weeks which is very common in the Vietnamese culture, we will probably end up spending the same amount. -
First birthdays are very important to Koreans. We've rented out the private dining area of a nice resto for 40 people, 3-course meal. Cost was just a little over $1000.

DD 1's was at a historic carousel by the beach. We had about 50 people (only a few babies/toddlers), pizza/salad/pasta, cookie favors (my sis made), 2 tier birthday cake, cotton candy & popcorn machines, homemade flower centerpieces, balloon decor and a photographer... it was about $1200 total.
DD 2's will be at home and we are expecting about 50 adults and 15 babies/kids. We're having it catered, planning a small dessert table and 2 tier birthday cake. We are also renting cotton candy and snow cone machines, a big bouncy house w/ ball pit and slide for toddlers, two generators, tents for shade, and tables and chairs. I'm making goodie bags, a banner and poms. A florist will make the centerpieces and a photographer is coming also. I'm hoping it's under $2,000.

We opted for 2 smaller family parties - one with each side of the family. At my in-laws we had about 15 people total. The birthday really just included a monkey cake and some presents from my in-laws and BIL/SIL.
At my parents, we combined it with Easter, and it was more of the same. There were more people there, since my stepmom has a huge family, but we really just celebrated the birthday with cake.Birthday's weren't a big deal when I was growing up. My sister, brother and I were all born on holidays (what are the odds of that?) and so there was always another reason for a celebration with family, and we just got added in to the mix.

We had about 30 ppl at home and spent about $1k. It would have been way cheaper but I wanted a fancy cake that was almost $500. Otherwise it was super low key.

I did almost everything myself, but splurged on a tiered cake from a bakery. That was the biggest stress reliever ever for me.

having it at my parents home for about 60 ppl, with a petting zoo, bakery cake, cake pops (favor), decorations from etsy, cake smash session the day before, rented tables/chairs with pizza/pasta/ salad about $1000

We did two small parties, one with my family at my aunt's house and one at our house with close friends; about 25 people at each. We or my aunt made all the food except for the cake served at the family party (my mom had a really good coupon for a great bakery). In total we spent less than $100 but decor was very minimal (picked up mainly at the dollar store by my aunt and then reused at the second party).

Wow! There are more expensive parties out there than I thought! I would like to see picture of everyone's 1st birthday party! Anyone else?
