I have friends who's kids wear whatever- stained- not the right size etc. While other people are very particular- as in they dress nicer than me. On here too I find lots of different thoughts on the subject. Where do you fall on the spectrum? Do you think you will care more at a certain point? Like entering kindergarten or when your kid cares?

I don't buy used much because I don't have time and if you buy sales online it's plenty cheap anyway. So we have some hand me downs but mostly new.
That said she gets a lot of gifts that fit but aren't really my style and she still wears those. And sometimes her favorite things aren't necessarily my favorites but as long as it's not horrible I want her to be happy with what she wears. so I think we are sort of in the middle.

I try not to have anything I don't like or not seasonally appropriate in their drawers - that way, they can wear what they want (within reason based on the occasion). That doesn't necessarily mean new and expensive though - we have plenty of cute Target play clothes and second hand Hanna/Boden. I've got no problem with used in great condition and sometimes seek it out when I don't like the clothes my favorite stores currently have in stock. I am pretty fussy about style/color/pattern/fit, but want my DDs to be happy and comfortable!

I only dress LO (2) in clothes I like. His clothes always fit well and I work hard to get all stains out! For summer he is mostly in comfy shorts from Target and tshirts with his favorite things on them: trucks, favorite characters, etc. I shop new, not because I am against hand me downs, but it has just been easier to shop new with sales etc. and I don't have friends with LOs of similar ages.

As long as it's weather and activity appropriate and fits her, I don't really care. I do cringe with the pattern mixing sometimes but if she doesn't want to change I won't make her.

I don't care about brands and I try to purchase most of his clothes at the 2 big annual consignment sales in our town. My only rule is I don't like shirts with "sayings" on them. He dresses up a little nicer for church.
I do think in another year I'm going to have to start going to the store for his clothes as it is getting harder and harder to find decent clothes in his size as he gets older at the consignment sales. Toddlers are hard on clothes!

I'm not a fan of having your kid run around in stained/ripped stuff (unless it literally just happened). I generally like most of his clothes and will buy used if it's the style I like but I mostly dress him in stuff that I like him to wear. I figure he'll get more picky as he gets older so I want to take advantage now while I can influence it.

I am particular about fabric, basically only cotton, and I will usually sew up a hole but don't care about stains. That being said. they wear almost entirely 'nice' brands like Hanna and Boden that I buy second hand. So I am a weird mix of preferences and not caring, haha!

I get a lot of great hand my downs but I over shopped during sales through size 2 so there's a lot to choose from. I'm not a fan of gifts that have appliqués and writing or characters- sometimes I return sometimes wear once and return. My Mom just takes me to HA and buys T a bunch so that's where most of her nicest clothes come from. I'm trying not to buy anything bigger than 2 since I expect her to have prefrances at that age that I will honor as long as it's suitable for the weather.

I voted 8. Only wear new basically as we don't really get hand me downs. I avoid stained stuff. Most of the stuff we have is new (but bought on sale) from gap. Then some nicer pieces from a local boutique store that I love.
ETA: I will put them in gifts I don't like. Just not really on a heavy rotation because I prefer to see them in cute outfits I've picked vs gifts I'm not too keen on.

Anything ripped or (too) stained gets tossed. I only buy clothes I like and mostly new because I don't have time to search for used (I mostly shop online). She does get a lot of clothes from my inlaws, a good portion of which I don't like (just not my style but it fits and is new). Most days though I don't care what she wears among her clothes as long as it is weather appropriate. Special occasions I do dress her in clothes I particularly like.

When my son was smaller, I cared a lot more...basically, I wouldn't put him in anything that had any characters, writing, wasn't cotton, etc. Everything is brand new, because i just don't have the time to shop second hand. I need specific things and sizes.
Eventually, though, he started to have his own preferences and now, he dresses himself. I also let him pick his own clothes from the stores I choose, so sometimes we end up with things I wouldn't have selected.
I think his outfit today would make a lot of moms on this board shudder: a pair of Lightening McQueen Crocs, a Spongebob and Patrick tee shirt from Uniqlo and a pair of hot orange shorts from Osh Kosh. None of it is dirty or torn, but it's for sure a character palooza.

I like most of her clothes but she has lots of opinions now about getting dressed and i def pick my battles just to get her fully clothed! I only keep seasonally appropriate and right sizes in Her drawers. All of it is new-- about half I buy on sale from like, gap or old navy, and half is from mil who is a shopaholic and buys fancy brands like Boden, tea, peek, etc. she doesn't rip clothes usually, but gets paint stains at daycare sometimes and I still let her wear it.

I don't care about having my kid look trendy or like a little fashion model. I like her to be in cute play clothes that she can be comfortable in but aren't ill fitting or stained/ripped. I don't like her to look sloppy but I don't care that she looks like a kid having fun.
Around 3 she started having her own preferences - she only wanted to wear dresses but I can get away with tunic style shirts with leggings too. If it were up to me she'd be more of a jeans and tshirt girl but she's more of a dress/tunic with leggings girl.
We buy mostly new or good quality used just bc the hand me downs stopped after she was a baby. We don't buy expensive clothes bc I'm too practical and her growth hasn't slowed like everyone said it would. She always moving up a size so I'm not going to spend lots on something she'll wear for maybe one season.

I voted 6 but we may be higher than that. We have a lot of hand me downs but I go through and only pull out the things I love plus maybe 3 outfits for the diaper bag and play clothes. I supplement with a handful of everyday outfits from Boden, Hanna Andersen etc plus usually one special occasion outfit like Christmas, Easter, weddings etc.

We buy new mostly because I can get online deals or Target sale items as cheap as consignment and I don't have to leave the house or wander far.
We get a lot of clothes gifted that are super nice but he just doesn't have many settings to wear such things.
My main requirements are that the clothes fit properly, are comfortable, seasonally appropriate, clean, and I'm not into character clothing (which I can get away with currently because my kid doesn't care about characters yet). So he mainly wears soft cotton separates year round, with appropriate layers, since he naps at daycare and I don't think denim and collared shirts would be comfortable to sleep in.
I also go for supportive comfortable shoes over anything cute once they're walking. It's a pain finding wide shoes for DS every 2 months but it's worth it with all the foot/ankle/knee problems we have in this family.

The only thing I spend money on is shoes. Otherwise I'm content with gifts and hand me downs. My family and friends have great taste so it is easy to be grateful for what I get!

If I dress him he wears what I like and for the most part purchased myself. I'm particular about his clothing in that I want it to be pleasing to me, but I am not a label or brand whore. LO doesn't have any hand me downs or used clothes yet (I found a consignment shop that looks promising).

I voted a 9. I don't put him in stained or ripped clothes, though of course food accidents happen sometimes during the day, and I don't bother to change him. His clothes are all things I've picked out and I like them. We do have some consignment sale stuff, but I generally only get things I like unless they're super back clothes that live at daycare. And the vast majority of his stuff is new because it's easier for me.
I try pretty hard to put him only in stuff that fits, but sometimes things are a little shorter than I'd prefer at the end of the season. And DH has a talent for putting those clothes on him, lol.
With all that said I don't buy a lot of high end brand stuff. Lots of Gymboree and old navy.

No ripped or stained clothes and she wears her size. We no longer receive hand me downs...she used to wear more when she was younger. I like her to look cute and age appropriate. I'm lucky that my mom and sister usually buy the majority of her clothes and I fill in with additional items she needs. My sister's taste is better than my mom's but there have been things my mom bought that I didn't like that LO has liked and wanted to wear.

Nothing super stained or ripped, I buy mostly new stuff as I have 3 girls and almost everything will be worn again and I don't buy expensive brands. Our favorites are Carter's, Oshkosh, H&M, Old Navy and Circo.
My LOs pick their own outfits and I don't veto very often unless it is for weather concerns or special occasions. -
I voted a 6. We've been lucky and grateful to receive a lot of gifts and a lot of hand me downs from buy nothing and friends. I buy a decent amount for her as well, usually used items for around $1 each, with the occasional splurge item (on sale or consignment) for around $4 each. I don't dress her in anything stained or torn. I like her to be in cute, but practical clothes. I'm not anti character clothing as she gets older and has a say in what she wears.

I buy new clothes or she wears gifts...it's easier for me to buy new during sales vs going to a consignment store. I do have outfits I prefer her to wear but for the most part I let her put together her outfits. Anything ripped I toss but I will occasionalLy keep stained clothing for her to wear for those times I know we are going to get really messy (an art class etc).

As long as it is clean and fits her and is approriate for the weather/activity, I don't really care. Not that I don't care per say, but it's just not a battle that's important enough to fight.

No rips, stains, and everything should fit her comfortably. I don't buy used because shopping for sales is so much more convenient. I try to make sure that the right type of clothes is out to match the season (I put away sandals and sleeveless dresses during winter, etc) to avoid struggles. Aside from weather and play appropriate clothing, I pretty much let her be. If it's a special occasion, I do my best to get her to wear what I want, but if she refuses, I don't fight that battle.

I'm not a fan of ripped, stained, worn out clothing. I mostly buy new bc like others have said, I buy new from old navy, gap, etc and secondhand can cost just as much. I don't mind hand me downs if they're in good quality (no matter the brand) but not stains. LO1 is almost 4 and likes whatever I pick out to wear. She dresses herself sometimes and it's usually what I would pick.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I am very particular about making sure LO's outfits match in color /style and are free of stains or rips. But, I'm a fan of hand me downs / buy nothing, and family members gift her tons of new clothing that I generally use regardless of whether it is my taste or not.

I like DD to be in cute clothes, but I am definitely not against taking hand me downs or shopping consignment. I don't like anything characters, that has sayings on it, animal prints, or tacky-sparkly so I donate anything we are given like that if it's new or used. I try to keep her clothes clean and unripped but she is 2.5 so her stuff isn't in perfect condition. Our biggest problem with clothes is that DD is extremely tall and skinny so her clothes are always a little too short! At least capri pants are stylish hahaha.

As long as it's clean, tidy, fits well and is weather appropriate then my big girl has free range of her wardrobe. I tend to buy a fair bit of gender-neutral stuff so that it can be re-worn by my wee guy and I don't like to spend $$ on brand name clothing that my girl refuses to wear!

I will not put my kid in stained clothing. Some people do and that's fine by me. I buy what she will wear. She is picky so we struggle a lot. I care that she looks cute. That's all.

@mediagirl: ditto. No rips and stains and I do want them to look cute. My DD is only 2.5 but has been picky since right before her 2nd birthday. My son is 5, so he's also picky now. I let them choose clothes as often as possible so that we don't end up with drawers full of things they refuse to wear. I buy a few nicer brands but all on sale, H&M for fillers or daycare-specific and I'll buy second hand if I find something I like.

@Portboston: your husband sounds a lot like mine. He went hog wild buying Nike baby booties with the Jumpman on them, so I guess they are technically Jordans. Anyways, those only see the light of day when DH dresses him. BTW, your little guy looks too cute with his StrideRite shoes!

Both of my kids are extremely opinionated about what they wear- I really don't care, as long as they're comfortable and warm enough.

My main thing is that I like for her to look like a little girl, not a tiny woman or fashion plate. So as long as it is cute, seasonably appropriate, and comfortable, I don't mind. I don't buy a lot of cheesy sayings and I do limit the character clothes (except underwear because she prefers princess underwear). I also don't let her wear things that are ripped or stained unless it happens while we are out.

As long as it fits (leggings totally turn into capris...right?!) and is unstained, my 4y picks out what she wears. I do request that it be at least relatively seasonally appropriate, and it's not like I buy a lot of crazy stuff for her to choose from...but I swear she comes up with the wackiest combos sometimes! My 18m I can still select for, so she usually looks cute and matches. Most of what I buy for each of them is fairly basic, comfy, mix and match.

I kinda care a lot lol. I like clothes and shopping for clothes so that extends to my family. I prefer classic looks with some trends mixed in. No stains or tears and I donate or return clothing gifts I don't like. Not everything is expensive necessarily, but for as long as I can manage, it has to match my aesthetic.
