LO is getting so many colds at daycare I started looking into nanny shares and other childcare options with smaller groups of kids. I don't see how we could afford a nanny.
There are a few SAHMs that are looking for babies to watch along with their LOs. Only one posted their rate, $15-18/hour. That doesn't seem like much less than a nanny. Most nanny posting I've seen are $15-20 /hour.
Does anyone have this arrangement? How much do you pay or how much are you paid?

Yes, we will be paying her $25 a day. That seems to be the going rate around here -$25-35 daily.

Would they be watching your LO at your house? Or theirs? What are the age of the other children? I think you are better off with a nanny.

If we were to do this I would pay her approx. half of what I would pay a regular nanny since her attention will be split in half between two children. The rate would also be affected by whether she would be coming to my house or my child would be going to her house.

We have a friend watch our 22 month old, she has a 3 year old, and watches a little boy before and after school. We pay her $25 a day.

How much are nanny shares in your area? I'd probably pay around that rate since that is basically what you are doing. Like LittleK said, I'd make sure that they have proper CPR training.

That seems expensive to me! How many hours would you need care? Even at the lower price point, assuming 8 hours a day, that's $120 per day.

Your house or hers?
I am a nanny and when interviewed to watch another child I charged my hourly rate. But that was less than what you quoted, nannies are cheaper in my area I guess.
But I would say probably over minimum wage? More if they're coming to your house.
I think it IS hard to choose a SAHM for care though. Natural instinct generally tends to respond to their own child - if both kids are crying who does she respond to? Her own child, or the one she is paid to care for? It's a predicament. When I was a nanny with a child, it was for a family I had been with for nearly 3 years, so I already loved those children and it was never an issue for us... but for someone you haven't known previously, it's hard to know what it will be like.
I wouldn't worry so much about her having her attention split between two children though, since that would be the same "issue" as using a nanny share or enrolling in daycare. I like the idea of "built-in" playmate as well.

We have a SAHM of two older kids (7 and 11) watching DD. She charges $25/full day and $15/half day. She us uh-may-zing!!

Thanks for all the responses. Sounds like it could be an affordable solution if I found the right SAHM. It's all still hypothetical at this point. I'm having a knee jerk reaction to daycare colds (& exhaustion since I'm up with a sick baby) and just wanted to re-investigate my options.

What about an in-home daycare? We pay $50/day (which is on the high end). A friend of mine pays half that.

@blackbird: we would also consider in home daycare. My current concern is the number of colds she's getting so if I made a move to address that concern I would want LO around as few kids as we can afford. Part of me thinks it's not worth making a switch since even one kid that has siblings or goes to Gymboree or a playdate can spread colds.

Wow $15-18 per hour is exorbitant! When I watched a toddler (my house and my baby was there too) I got like $25 a day I think.

Nooooooo way. I'm not paying a SAHM $18/h to watch hers & mine.
I'd rather up it to $20 and get a nanny. You can get a $20/h nanny here in MI. You would save gas and commute time because the nanny would come to you.
I used to nanny but I was not certified and I was 18-21 years old, so it was different. Either way, I charged $15/child so for them with 3 kids, it was $45 a day for 3 kids.

Before we found our in-home caregiver, there was a SAHM in our neighborhood who watched 3 other children in her home and wanted $18/hour.
We passed.

@Corduroy: @Mrs. Pen: A DAY, girlfriend :'( a daaay, not hourly! Yeah....they used and abused me because I was just a kid. But hey, I got to drive their car and eat all their food so, whatevs.
@Corduroy: yeah, you guys are a little higher than MI. I think I could find daycare here for $275 a week versus that $350. Granted, it wouldn't be the best available.

Wah! I just got LO from daycare and there was a note on the sign-in sheet saying a child was just diagnosed with Hand Foot & Mouth. I feel like we're never going to be healthy again. Ok, end vent.

We pay a SAHM $10/h on the two days per week that I work. She has a 3 year old daughter who M LOVES. I think M actually gets more out of the socialization at her babysitter's house than she would if we had a nanny at our house.
We live in Boston and most people that I've talked to are actually shocked that we're paying that little. I guess it just depends where you are. I hope you find something that works well for you and your LO! These childcare decisions are so hard...
