I would do at least $8. Care.com has a pay calculator if you want to see what the going rate is. If she is really excellent it is worth paying her well. I know I always go above and beyond for families who pay well. I'm almost always willing to be flexible and come again.

That seems a little low? When *I* was a teen babysitter I got paid at least $8/hour, and this was at least 15 years ago. I was in Utah.

I lean towards $8 or $10 since she's not an "experienced" babysitter.

Man, I used to babysit 11 month old triplets when I was in junior high and the parents would pay me $20 for an evening (4-5 hours or so). I thought that was awesome back then! Now I'm feeling old and realizing yet again that times sure have changed!

@MediaNaranja: haha I was just thinking back and I think I was paid $12/hr, and that was a loooong time ago!! Although, I was also watching 3 kids.

I would say no less than $7. $5 seems a little too low.

I would say $7 or $8 is appropriate for that age. I think I got paid around $5/hour in Indiana when I was a teenager and that was about 15 years ago.

I'm in Connecticut now and I know I couldn't get anyone for less than $10. We pay our 26 year old, experienced sitter $12.

I also like @JerricaBenton's suggestion of maybe going with a flat rate for the evening.

Teen, no car $7-8 (assumes I am doing pick up/ drop off or within walking distance )

Teen, with car $9-10 (assumes teen is driving herself)

We pay ours $5/hr plus like a $5 tip. C is usually asleep already when she comes over, her mom normally comes to hang out with her also. Shes 13.

I just "hired" a 15 year old student to be a mother's helper for a few hours a week over the summer and asked her what she charged. She felt a little awkward naming a price, but she thought about it over the weekend and came up with $8 an hour - though she said she'd totally leave it up to me. That's about what I was thinking I'd pay, so it worked out.

I pay $10 an hour. I'm in Texas. Most the girls I get to sit for him are in HS.

I was making $10 an hour as a teenage babysitter 15 years ago! I'd at least pay her $10 an hour.

I think there is quite a bit of variance, but I got $7-8/hr as a teenage babysitter 10 years ago. I did babysit for one family for $5/hr but I saw it as a favor because they were not doing well financially. Nowadays, I would probably pay $8-10/hr plus pizza money. But if you know $5/hr is standard for your area/family that sounds fine! I think you did the right thing by asking what she charges.
