I think you can always find expensive/cheap photographers regardless of where you live. I think it depends on the competition and what you're looking for.
One photographer I loved charged $500 for a sitting fee and $1000 for the digital proofs. This is for family photos.
Eta: the photographer is established but I couldn't justify it in the end. We ended up doing photos in my home city (bigger city, more competition) but I can't remember the price. I think she had a $100 sitting fee that she waived bc of a promo. We had 5 digital prints and she charged $300.

For a well established photographer in my area is $250-$500 sitting fee..packages $750-1,500!
There are many up and coming cheaper ones that do great work it seems they seem.to be about 1/2 that!
I have had bad experiences both ways, so I am bitter to buying photos.....

We paid $400 for her sitting fees: 4, 8, 12, and 18 months. Then we had to spend $300 in prints to get the CD.

It varies. I would say ask around.
Last year I got an one hour session for 9 people with all the digital photos in dropbox to me for about 400 dollars. I didn't get any prints or canvas from him but I had the high resolution imagine and I was able to get some great stuff printed on my own (Costco and Shutterfly).
This was a middle range number.
I think the high was probably 2k for an all day session with prints, they didn't offer anything else but they were so popular that they were booked way in advance so I couldn't even book this person if I wanted to.

@Raindrop: seems to be around $250- $300 per session, nothing included.. DH astonished by cost

We live in a large city. I spent hours looking for someone I loved that also was reasonable in price. Maternity through one year photos cost us 1300 for sitting fees plus digital rights, which I thought was an amazing deal. Most other photographers I contacted had about a 200 sitting fee per hour session plus at least a required 200 print commitment.
eta: The package included birth photography and a full studio newborn session. The other sessions are mini half hour shoots.

Totally varies, but we have paid anywhere from $200 to $1k for the session plus all digital files for baby/family photos. The $200 one was a shorter session, fewer photos, and not as many good shots. The $1k one was amazing. Next time I will probably find someone charging somewhere in between.
We never buy prints or canvases from photographers because the prints are insane. Like $35 for a single 5x7 print or something. So we generally just get digital files.

@BandDmommy: Yeah I know what you mean I was a bit sticker shocked at first too! 200 dollars for just one person sitting fee and maybe 50-100 dollars for any extra person. That's just for the person to take pictures. Getting the pictures was a whole another story. One person I asked... it was 100 dollars for EACH digital photo I wanted.
I will say that they are charging what people will pay for it. So those high end ones are probably worth it. If you pay less just prepare yourself for not the "best" if that makes sense.
I was lucky I found the guy I found... but he doesn't do family photo sessions anymore. He only does weddings now. But he was super reasonable... for the 400 dollars I got all the pictures he took which was around 150 pictures. Which was a steal!! I actually liked the pictures a lot but wasn't looking for masterpieces just pictures to capture LOs age in his life.

Cost of living in my area isn't "expensive." But photogs range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars for sessions and prints. I don't think it's dependent upon cost of living area as much as quality and what you're looking for in experience and style.

I expect to spend anywhere from $500-1000 when all is said and done depending if it's a newborn vs. mini session.

@catomd00: we just spent $2,800 on 1 year pics and DH is in sticker shock

Our upcoming newborn/ family photos are costing about $550 and include the session and five digital images. We can purchase more images individually or all the them for a large fee, or buy prints from her. Haven't taken them yet (baby is still cooking) but I do really like her photos online.
We previously did family photos for a cheaper rate and they were fine. Nothing spectacular, though certainly better than I could have taken.

@BandDmommy: We have a photographer in the NOVA area we LOVE. She charges $180 for a mini session (30 mins, 10 digital files). I think it's totally reasonable for this area. I have seen other photographers charge a lot more. That being said, we've only ever done mini sessions because those meet our needs.

Our particular photographer waives the sitting fee if you are an established client. Digital images are crazy expensive with him and he doesn't do packages except weddings, 5x7 starts at 45 bucks....

I have found that there are photographers at every price range. On the high end, sitting fees + digital photos for $1000+. On the lower end, $300-500 for a 1 hour shoot + digital photos (sometimes unlimited, sometimes limited to a specific # like 5, 10 or 20).

I'm in NYC and some of the photogs I was looking at for newborn photos were around 800-900 for the session, no photos included, and 1000-1200 for the session and all digital negatives. We luckily found someone less expensive who I loved more than any of the more expensive ones!

I agree with others, there is a range from Craigslist to super high end. Some cities are more saturated than others. The highest quotes from two top area photographers for newborn photos were about 2k for everything I wanted. An acquaintance who was portfolio building for lifestyle sessions charged much less than that.

@BandDmommy: $400 for all! I would never pay $400 for one session plus pictures.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
@BandDmommy: did you buy large prints/canvases? I can easily see it adding up. Baseline newborn shoot here is around $1000-1500 with a handful of digital files and maybe a print credit for a few 8x10s. i can get on board with paying for high quality photography, but I see tons of amateurs charging way too much considering they have no formal training and only a couple years of experience. I guess if people will pay it they can charge it. Our family photographer has Moved away from providing digital files to doing a la carte ordering and I'm not a big fan. I like the option to not spend an extra $500 minimum on prints if I don't love the pics.
honeydew / 7444 posts
@BandDmommy: that's relatively inexpensive considering what you are getting. Those albums are crazy expensive and I find it better to get the digital prints and get them made through an online company.

Man - we live in a big city and I just paid $100 for our family photos. We spent ~45 minutes shooting at a local park and she edited all images and I got all the digital files (and a print release).
grapefruit / 4400 posts
I mean, you basically got a wedding package, so I guess it's about average for a canvas, prints, and a fancy album. Do photographers in your area not offer digital files?
We live on OC and paid $30 for a mini session and 50 digital images. I'm going to get a few canvases done for grandparents and our fireplace and I think we'll spend under 10% of what you did.
pomelo / 5660 posts
@Mrs.KMM: I think you can get mini sessions for that price but most photogs around here start around $250 for a session which includes nothing
grapefruit / 4400 posts
@BandDmommy: I think that's a better deal than getting the finished products from a photographer. What if the canvases got damaged after you put them up or if you wanted to put them on another wall and they were too big/small? Or if the prints got ripped if the kids were looking at them? At least of you had the files, you'd be able to replace them at a fraction of the cost.

@catomd00: our photog is amazing! She has formal training and won tons of awards. I think what I can take away from this thread is I can find someone cheaper but the prices aren't that crazy for what I'm getting. We had amateur photographer for DS and she charged less but I did not like the pics.

It's hard to find a good photographer in the Seattle area for under $500. We paid $600 and that included the digitals.

I never use a photographer for their printing services, that's where I feel the mark up is! There is so much out there now in terms of printing services, you just have to experiment a little, but I can see where someone might not want to spend the time with that kind of stuff.
I have come to terms with accepting that I don't need 1000 images from a session. Take my wedding for example, we have 3 photos in the house, one 8 x10 and two 5 x7s. The rest we've done nothing with, not even an album. Eventually, we might do an album, but I am in no rush. Our house has photos and things around, but there comes a point where it's oversaturated and that's not my style.
We just paid about $100 for a mini session this year, via a fundraiser at my son's school. 30 minutes, one 8x10 print and about 25 digital images. It's more than enough for me.

I agree with others, don't go with the photographers printing services. Digital files will save you a lot of money. Aside from that. As others have mentioned, having the digital file gives you security if something ever happens to the prints.
