I've collected a bunch over the last year and a half. Most of it was good deals, so I'm glad I got something when I did. (Thank you black friday!)

Honestly i have no idea because like you I spread out the purchases over the past year+, before even getting pregnant. Worked out because now I have almost everything I need and without one big upfront expense!

I have 24 diapers. 18 bum genius freetimes I purchased myself. 6 alvas that were a gift (we use initially but I hate them now that LO is older so they got put away for emergencies only). We bought a diaper sprayer, a large wet bag for at home, and a small wet bag for my diaper bag. We also bought a trash can for wet-only diapers.
Diapers - $236
Diaper sprayer - $60
Wet bags- $30
Trash can - $5
= $331 + maybe $10/mo in extra detergent and water usage (we wash e/o day and throw in whites, towels, or baby clothes with the second wash cycle)
ETA: I keep in mind too that BG free times are extremely resellable. I got most of mine on the bg b/s/t on fb and I keep them in good shape so I expect that when I'm done I will get back at LEAST half of my investment on the diapers.

I bought almost everything before my DD was born, and haven't had to spend much at all since then. We received as gifts 2 Bumgenius diapers, the trash can used for the dirty diapers (a simple human can), the wet liners for the can, and the spray attachment for the toilet, which totaled about $225-250.
In terms of my expenses, I purchased 24 fitted newborn Kissaluvs (for the first 2 months) for $312, 4 Bummis newborn covers for $50, 50 cloth wipes for $60, 3 pkg of hemp inserts for $45, 2 smaller wet bags for the diaper bag for $25 and 22 Bumgenius 4.0 diapers for $300 (there was a buy 5 get 1 free deal going, so I got 4 diapers for free).
So my grand total was $792, and if I had purchased the gifts, it would be around $1,000. We bought most of our supplies off of Amazon except for the BG diapers as the best deal at the time was through Cotton Babies. I am not the best deal finder, and like the ease of Amazon, so I imagine there could be a way to find some of these supplies cheaper.
My DD just turned 2, and that is all I have had to buy since the day she was born. Our water bill went up a couple bucks, and I buy detergent every other month. I do buy coconut oil for diaper rash, but a large jar is about $18 and lasts 2-3 months for us. We hope to use everything as she potty trains this year, and then reuse for a future child or two. So I hope to get my moneys worth. As Mae said, they are resellable and though I bought them new, I hope to resell them for at least half as well. You could save a lot of money if you bought them used and were able to resell them again.

I can't even imagine how much I spent...I bought dozens of GMD prefolds, 10 GMD fitteds, several Bummis and Thirsties covers, a wool cover, NB BGs, Freetimes, 4.0s, a pail, liner, wet bags, tons of fleece liners, disposable liners, Snappis...and he can't even wear CDs.
