I would like to get a good suit this year since we have a pool.
What are good places to look and what's a realistic number to budget for?

Heh I'm super cheap. I bought a two-piece during a sale at oldnavy.com yesterday. I think each piece was $12 before the 20% discount.

I usually get one (or a couple!) from Victoria's Secret . . . the on sale suits are really inexpensive, and there is usually a good deal of variety.

Depends on your size, too. I have a hard time with swimsuits because I'm busty and need the support, so I end up spending a lot more than I want to because I'm pretty limited as it is. If you're an average-ish size, I'd say $50 and get two, so that if one of them is wet, you have another to wear! When i had a pool as a kid, I felt like I went through a swimsuit or two a season from just the wear and tear

@FutureMrsMcK: hahah that's what I want to do or go to Target! But we have a pool so the suit will get a lot of use! So I'm thinking of splurging on a good suit that will last me a few years?

@blackbird: I'm small busted and petite but not short.

@regberadaisy: Yeah, I probably won't be using it very much so I'm okay with it being cheap. If I had a pool I'd probably invest in a really nice one.

I like Jcrew, but they are pricey. For cheap, I like Target - Mossimo specifically!

I tend to spend $100+ on a suit. But I'm super picky and have a weird body shape. Petite frame, a big booty and big boobs.

@regberadaisy: I don't know if suits ever last that long because they start to pill or fade after wearing them a lot. I have paid $20 for a bikini and $60 for bikinis and I don't know if I think there is a huge quality difference! (Both were on sale... Probably at least 40% off knowing my shopping habits!) I would get one that you feel good in. I typically buy mine at Macy's.

I spent around $70, which is way more than I usually would. The bottoms were $50 something at Nordstrom and I used a gift card. The top was under $20 from Target.

I just bought one from J. Crew. It was $80, and I typically would not spend even close to that (usually about $20 at Old Navy). But I wanted a nice, supportive one piece that would last me a few seasons. And MODG gave a great review on a J. Crew one piece, so that sold it. http://www.modgblog.com/2012/06/22/just-say-no-to-mom-swimwear-your-life-depends-on-it-a-brazilian-told-me/

I probably won't go swimming this summer, but I plan on getting a rash guard from Jcrew when the time comes!

I just ordered a few different bottom/top combos from athleta to try but stuck to their sale section, so it'll be $50 or less.

Less than 50, I'm a Target girl. VS has good options too for cheap.

I tend to spend a little more to feel better in it-- any time I try on cheap ones at Old navy or Target I usually feel pretty terrible about myself after. I find J Crew to be a lot more flattering, even if it is a little overpriced. So for me it depends on how much I'm going to be wearing it, but if we had a pool and I'd be in a bathing suit a lot, I'd be OK with spending $100.
Usually I'll order a whole bunch of sizes and styles from J Crew when they are all full price, try them all on at home and decide which ones I love, which I like enough that I'd want them on a good sale, and which ones look bad. Then I return them and wait for the ones I like to go on sale-- they have so many 'final sales' that this way, there is no risk. But that's when I have plenty of time.

Interested as well. I want to find a one piece for around 50 or less.

I usually get 2-3 swimsuits each year from target or VS. I spend $30 or So on each one.
This year I will get a maternity suit and want something flattering and comfortable and am hoping to spend $50 -$70.

Jcrew has the best suits, but they are super pricey so I actually haven't bought one I think since college. For basic color tops and bottoms target is great and you can usually buy both pieces for under $40. I just bought a top at Asos for $30 that I pair with bottoms I already own. And as a preggo I splurged on one from pea in the pod which was $79, but worth every penny since I'll be wearing it all summer.

Before baby, I lived in a bathing suit for most of the year, so I almost always purchased 4 suits at the beginning of the season. I usually spent $40/piece so $80/suit.
But now that I'm not comfortable in a bikini, and I hate spending clothing on myself since I'm not thrilled with my body yet (working on it!) I'm pretty cheap and just buy Target or Old Navy pieces on clearance. And I've only purchased 2 suits. So we're talking a whole $20-30 per suit.

J. Crew swimsuits are my favorite, so if I'm lucky I can get one in the sale for like, $40-50, but usually it ends up being more like, $80. However, they have such classic styles and I end up wearing them forever.

@meredithNYC: do they last quite a few seasons w/o looking ragged? How's the sizing on their suits? I know Jcrew tends towards petite girls so I think their suits would look OK on my frame.

i order from lands end during their sales (with a coupon code, haha) & try to get pieces i can mix & match. always under $30 for tops & $25 for bottoms or $40 for a 1 piece.

@BananaPancakes: @Rainbow Sprinkles: do Target suits last a few seasons w/o getting all stretched out?
eggplant / 11287 posts
@regberadaisy: I think so. I don't wear them a TON since we don't get lots of hot days but I still wear tops from 3 years ago.
pomegranate / 3314 posts
@regberadaisy: I think they last a long time, but then again I have lived in the city so long that I don't wear my swimsuits all that often. Fit-wise, I think they're pretty true to size. I haven't ordered one this year, but one of my friends just got a bikini from them and the top was more bra-style and came in bra sizes. So that's kind of awesome, I think.

$70ish because I love Panache! They are pricey, but I'm petite with big boobs and I love that the tops come in bra top sizes. And they're cute, too!

I got mine from lands end last year one sale it was $60 for tankini and bottoms. It had minimal bust support so I really want a different one with actual cups.
I like athleta suits because they size by bust size! I would spend a little over $50 for a good suit.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
@regberadaisy: I'm guessing it would depend on how much you wear it, but personally I think they seem better quality than the few VS suits I've purchased in the past. I'd wager they'd hold up well. I bought my first one last summer and only wore it 3 times, though. .

The one I bought for this year was $35 - more than I would normally spend, but I just don't have that body where anything looks good anymore.
grapefruit / 4903 posts
@blackbird: exactly this. I wish I had the luxury of picking up a cheap suit at Target or even splurging at JCrew. I end up spending at least $75, usually for something I don't love but fits up top.

@meredithNYC: @regberadaisy: I love J Crew suits! I stalk the website and when the final sale has an additional percentage off, I pounce.
I am pretty hard on my suits and they are all great looking. I have several that I have had for at least 3 years, and I wear them both in the ocean and the pool. I even machine wash them on the gentle cycle in a mesh bag, and they've held up fantastically.
