For those who have your kid in a preschool, hoe much do you spend a month? I'm asking about part time programs (a few hours a day, a few days a week), not full time care with a preschool curriculum.

Ours is $1200 for the school year, 2 days a week for a few hours.
The Montessori that we wanted to send him to was $7000 for the same schedule.

We pay $350 per month for 4 days a week, 2 hours per day in the afternoon. The price will be going up to $440 next year for the same program.

We are very fortunate to be part of a co-op type preschool that only charges $175 a month. There are fund raising and volunteer requirements but they have only amounted to a few hours per month.

@shellio: Our co-op preschool is $350/month for 3 hrs/day, 3 days/week. We have similar volunteer and fundraising requirements, but we live in a HCOL area.

Ours is around $1300/month but it is an all day, 8-2:30, M-F special needs inclusion preschool that builds therapy (for both special needs and typically developing kids) into the school day. So maybe I shouldn't have voted because it is such a unique situation!

The one we are looking at is aroud $65 a month for 2 days a week 2 1/2 hours each day. It comes out to $570 for the year. The three & four day programs are more I think are $675 for 3 mornings or $900 for 4 mornings.

@macintosh: we don't have public preschool in our area. Pre-k can be free but not preschool.

@Smurfette: forgive my ignorance, but what's the difference? The child's age? This prompted me to look at my local district's primary school programs.

@macintosh: They don't exist in our area. You can get a government subsidy for daycare if you are very low income, but I don't believe public preschools are a thing here. I am in NC.
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
@macintosh: preschool starts 2.5-3.5 and then preK 4 or 4.5. Pre-k are often at the elementary school, and regular school hours.

@macintosh: Where I live, public preschool is all day, 5 days a week and is not free. I previously believed public = free, but not with preschool!

@Mrs. Lion: Wow, I never would have thought they didn't have state pre-k. I'm pretty sure I went to pre-k at a public school here in IL.
@Smurfette: I see, that makes sense. I looked at my town's district site and it can't find the age ranges for their early childhood program. I did find that IL has a state funded "preschool for all" program for ages 3-5.
Sorry for taking this thread off on a tangent

@macintosh: ours is through the public school system but there is tuition. The only free programs are based on no or low-income. I think that's pretty common.

@Mrs. Coral: Interesting! I wouldn't mind paying something for public preschool, but I can see looking elsewhere if it's cost-prohibitive.

@macintosh: Ours is public, but we have to pay.
C is starting in our school district's preschool in the Fall. It's $140/week for full-time and they start at age 3 and need to be potty-trained. They do part-time too, but Im not sure the cost.
ETA: Just found it. It's $70/week for 5 days, either morning or afternoon.

$176 per month for not potty-trained, 2 year-old, 2 days a week and 3 hours a day. It's a bit expensive for our area, but really good quality. We're happy!

The one she will go too when she old enough (I believe she can't start until she's 3 of course missing the first deadline by a month.) is 85/month. We have a public preschool but it's very hard to get into and I don't know if we will be in our city or our new location when she's pre-K.

@macintosh: We have very limited pre-k programs in select schools for very low income families, and a few for children with special needs. But the vast majority of kids do not qualify for free programs. If they did we would totally take them up on it! Education is tragically underfunded in NC.

I paid close to $300 last year for 2 days a week for 2 1/2 hours. This year its closer to $700 for 3 days a week for 4 hours.

@macintosh: ours is public in the sense that it isn't affiliated with a church. Our preschool is a non-profit and we pay tuition.

Ours is around $320 for 2 days/3 hrs. a day. She's starting in the fall.

@macintosh: my state doesn't have any sort of public option other than head start. There is a proposal before the legislature though for free, universal pre-k for four year olds.
I think most states that do have a public option gear it towards very low income kids. Or if it's universal they are public/private partnerships so they can still be private providers running the public preschool.
I really, really hope we get it passed! I was trying to get an idea of what we would have to pay but the few quality preschools in my area don't have websites that list the cost. Also there is no licensing standard for preschools in my area. So I would kind of prefer a daycare with a preschool (which do have to meet standards) but that tends to be more expensive.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Is that the definition of public preschool? I was thinking public = government funded. I may have been using the wrong definition...

@Mrs. Lion: that's what I've always meant! Maybe I'm in the wrong.

The preschools we are looking at are between $700 and $1,000 per month. It's horrible.
pomegranate / 3438 posts
We pay for full time 5 days a week but if we were to just do the preschool hours from 8:30-12:30 it would be $700/month for 5 days a week, $550/month for 3 days a week and $450/month for 2 days a week.

@macintosh: They don't exist here either. Public school starts at Kindergarten.

The Goddard preschool we're looking at for DS is $650/month for 5 - 3 hour days.
