And what type of pillows do you have (down filled? particular brand?)
For our 2nd anniversary, DH got me (us, but really me!) two sets of really really nice sheets, and now I feel like our pillows are not up to snuff! We got two nice pillows off our wedding registry two years ago...is it reasonable to replace them now? Or do pillows last a lot longer than that?

I actually read somewhere a while ago that you should replace your pillows every year, however I don't know how realistic that is! We bought higher quality hypoallergenic pillows with wedding gift cards a year and half ago and still use them, however we have been discussing replacing them as they are starting to get pretty flat.

I haven't replaced our pillows in YEARS, but I do wash them frequently. We have a few down pillows, a few with polyster fiberfill, and a couple tempurpedic pillows.
If your pillows are giving you the right support/sleep, I say replace em!

@jessiejo17: oh interesting! I feel like ours are also starting to get flat/lumpy..so maybe some replacements are in order.

Ours are starting to get flat/lumpy too and I'm exhausted to think about buying new ones! Buying pillows is one of the hardest tasks! It can seem lovely in the store and then you get it home and sleep on it and it sucks!
I even bought temperpedic pillows when we got our mattress a couple of years ago. They had them on all of the mattress models and were SO comfortable. Well after dropping a fortune on 2 of them, they didn't feel anything like the floor model pillows. We tried them for 2 weeks and gave up. I returned them and the sales guy said that they have to be "broke in" and that's why the models were so comfy. I'm sorry but for $150 a pop, I shouldn't have to suffer until they're broke in!
So I'm scarred for life and basically just DREAD pillow shopping.

@jholler25: haha oh no! that does sound stressful...do you find that tempurpedic pillows get really hot? That's my fear with them...I also like the fluffiness of down, so I think that's what we'll go with. My plan is to go to the store and say I need this size pillow, point me to the best one that's fluffy!

Never? We throw them in the wash before using. And wash them every once in a while.

@hilsy85: Hubby and I are pillow freaks! We also have 2 body pillows... haha!
@MrsBrewer: depending on the pillow, yes! I put in 2-3 pillows on the delicate cycle in my front loading washer, then toss it in the dryer with a couple tennis balls and make sure they're super dry so no mold will be growing. I have learned that some pillows aren't meant to be washed because I've had some turn into a cube - literally. haha!

I usually replace them yearly. We always get outs at Marshall's- Ralph Lauren pillows are about $20 each

@mrsjyw: oh wow so in that case we're definitely due for replacements...but if I'm going to replace them that often, it makes me not want to spend as much on nice ones. Grr. @crash806: Hmm good call, I should check out home goods or something.

@hilsy85: yep that's for the down feather ones.. ours seems to lose OOOMPH after that; or maybe we just have big heads? 
we did just purchase two "side sleeper" and two "back sleeper" tempurpedic/gel pilliows and those seem like they will last a couple years at least~

@MrsBrewer: I use medium or medium-low to expedite the drying process. Otherwise, fluff or low setting could take HOURS to fully dry.

Haha definitely not often enough. When we moved out of my starter apartment and I bought new bedding last year I finally replaced my 6 year old pillows. I did wash them regularly, but I don't plan on going that long again.
Like others I had to buy a special pillow since I'm a side sleeper - before I did that I was suffering with neck pain from our new fluffy pillows lol!

Can you wash fiber fill pillows without then getting lumpy? I wash my down ones regularly but I havent washed my new fiber fill ones.
Btw I've had an expensive down pillow break in the wash on me! Omg it smelled so bad!!!

@hilsy85: I just got one of the brookstone biosense pillows (side sleeper) and its amazing. You get the support of the memory foam, and the fluffiness of down all in one pillow.
We also have 2 memory foam 1 temperpedic and 1 not. My brookstone replaced my non temperpedic memory foam which I had for years and DH took it. Our temperpedic lives on the couch and is extremely old, and you can tell the foam is starting to break down. Its very soft and comfy to lay on...but we can basically mold it into any shape we want.

@jholler25: What time of year did you buy your temperpedic? They can get VERY firm/hard during the winter when it is cold and then it takes them a while to warm back up and become soft again. This may be what the sales guy was talking about. The store is probably kept at a certian temp year round and the pillows stay comfy. We discovered this when we were doing research about purchasing a temperpedic bed. All the reviews said to purchase in the summer when everything is hot/warm because of how long it takes the beds to come to "room temp" if you buy them when its cold.

@jholler25: happened to us too! We bought pillows for $90 from my chiropractor, but they were so uncomfortable! I hated them. We couldn't return them either. Bahhh!!!

It's been awhile ... years?! I do use thick pillow protectors that we wash with the sheets often and the pillows get thrown in occasionally as well.
