i put some water in the microwave to steam it then wipe it down about once a week.

Not often enough, but I love the 50% vinegar solution in a microwave bowl and nuke for 4 min. Makes cleaning the microwave so easy.

I don't think I've done it for months! Although whenever we use the microwave we always are really good to make sure everything is covered, so we never have any spills or splatters

@mrbee: that's the only way I do it. Seriously heat it up for 5-10 minutes and all you have to do is wipe with minimal effort.

Not nearly enough. A tip I learned is to fill a glass bowl with water then add a few drops of liquid dish soap and nuke it for about 5 minutes. The soap is a degreaser and makes it so easy to wipe down when it's done.

I microwave a bowl of vinegar in it about once a week and just wipe it out. The vinegar steams everything right off! I am bad about covering food with a paper towel every time, but my husband isn't so I feel obligated to keep it clean since I mess it up

Just when I notice that it needs it. I will have to try the vinegar trick.

I clean our dishwasher with a bowl of vinegar too! You just fill up a small/medium bowl of white vinegar, set it on the top rack, and run a regular cycle. It cleans out any funky smells and our dishwasher seems to run/drain better after I do it.

When it looks dirty.

@grizz: Oh, you can do it with the dishwasher, too? So cool! Definitely need to do this because my dishwasher needs it!
