It's only happened once for us. We have a fenced in back yard, but we have idiot kids that live near us, and torment our poor dogs when they are outside Well one time when we let our dogs out (I didn't notice right away) but our back gate leading into our alley was open. I'm not saying it was the kids, but someone went and opened the gate without our knowledge....Luckily after I didn't see them in the backyard 5 or so minutes after letting them out, I ran outside into the alley, and there was an older gentlemen telling our 2 dogs to "go home" hahaha once they saw me, they immediately ran into the yard!

my lab mix is stuck to me like glue. even with the the gates or doors open he's never more than 5 ft from me. and he actually has a really good recall when we've taken him to dog parks and dog beaches.

my parents/childhood dog was a known escape artist and would get loose all the time. It was rough because he wasnt chipped and rarely wore a collar. He was picked up by animal control at the shore, one day we found him at our towns police station, we frequently had to chase him down our street, or coerce him in with promises of milk, lunch meat or rides in the car. If anyone is familiar with the breed he was shiba inu and its a pretty common trait for them.

Never, and even if she did get loose she wouldn't run off. We sometimes let her off the leash when we are out hiking, and she stays right with us.

Never. We don't even have a fenced yard, but she's always just stayed put.

Never. We just let him loose in our yard (we have a pretty big lot, no fence though) and he never goes beyond our property. He's a lazy English bulldog though and they tend to stick pretty close to home. He mainly just does this thing then lies on the back deck in the sun.

We have lived in our apartment for 3 years and our dog has gotten out of the backyard without our knowledge once. The yard is fenced in, but apparently there was a small space he was able to squeeze himself through to get underneath the porch, and from there a loose board he nudged aside to get out. It took me a good 30 minutes to find him and it was some of the worst minutes of my life because all I could picture was him having been hit by a car. Luckily he came back toward home and I nabbed him just around the corner. After that we went over the yard and fencing inch by inch and reinforced anything we even thought he could somehow bypass. He was still a puppy actually the time he escaped, and there have been a couple times since then either DH or I have forgotten to close the gate and not realized it until the dog was out, but luckily the dog knows now not to leave the yard.

Never. He has too much anxiety to run off, even when presented with the opportunity. Case in point: took my girls to the park with the nanny for an hour last week. Neither the nanny and I are sure who left last, but whoever did, did not close the front door securely. We came home and it was half open, due to the wind. Any other dog would have run off, but nope, not ours! He was hiding in the corner 🙄 At least I didn't worry about anyone being in the house (we still did a thorough check) because he would have let us know!

We have no leash laws in our town and dogs regularly roam free throughout the neighborhood. It's a very quiet street so at busiest times there may be 5-10 cars an hour, otherwise we can go hours without seeing a car. Our yard isn't fenced and he's usually pretty good about staying on our property, but every now and then he goes explore and comes back after 30-40 minutes.

As a puppy, a bunch of times. She was just nuts! Now, she has slipped out the yard door before, but she will just go to our front door and sit there, haha.

A few times as a puppy and when we've moved. We used to both be really long distance runners and would run in the woods. I got a bit turned around one time when I stopped to tie my shoe and was visiting family and had to call dh. Our dog just kept going till he got home.

Never. They spend most of their lives on couches.

Never. He was always a pretty timid dog who never strayed far from us, even off-leash. He's gone completely blind in the last year and sticks to the places he knows, which is the back patio and the first floor of our house. He is too scared to do stairs so I don't even have to worry about him going to the second floor. The only way out of the back patio is to the garage (we are in a townhouse) and since that is always closed (and he wouldn't climb the stairs anyways) there's no way he can escape. It has turned out to be the perfect setup for our blind pup!!
