You know, the soft plush kind with plastic parts and rings attached? I'm afraid it would break something (or break itself) in the washing machine.
DS's fav toy has been spit up on so many times that it's pretty gross

if you don't want to buy a lingerie bag, you could also use a pillow case and tie it closed (either with a knot if the toy is small, or a rubber band if it's bigger)
But as long as they're hard plastic, it probably won't hurt anything. It wouldn't be any worse than throwing tennis shoes in the wash.

I used a spray bottle with vinegar and water for toys that say surface clean only. Then hung them in the sun to dry.

Just rinse with really hot water and hang dry in the sun.

Most of those toys are actually safe for washing - I know I've washed our Lamaze toys in the washing machine.

I throw ours in the washing machine. Pretty much anything is fair game as long as there are no electronics.

I dump in soapy water, wring it out as best as I can and lay in the sun to dry.

I throw her toys in the wash on gentle cycle and let them air dry
