So my bro and sil want to say that nephew is my son so we can bring him in.... But I really don't want him there... He goes to classes and I'm sure full of germs.... He's not yet 2 and I really don't want to risk my babies getting sick. I don't want a spinal tap and I sure as heck don't want my kids getting one. =(

Just tell him you really don't want a toddler in the room. Is this for childbirth or just until you're home? The approach depends on the situation. Personally, I would NOT want my brother, let alone his wife, in the room while I'm giving birth.

Tell him you want to use your hospital time for recovery. Then make EVERYONE uses hand-sanitizer while visiting, and make it clear visits should be minimal and short until you are through your recovery phase (if you can't come up with a more tactful way to keep him away until then.)

Ugh, that annoys the heck out of me as a staff member when people lie about having other kids when they don't.
You brother might get a surprise he doesn't like if the nurse checks the chart (we check the chart in my NICU and it lists names, ages, and genders of siblings). Make him aware that even if he gets past the nurses that your nephew will not be welcome to touch the babies until X age, if that is what you and your DH have decided.

That's really odd to me... are they just that anxious for your nephew to meet his new cousins? To me I would feel like they are making their own child a little more important than he is in this situation... your LOs' safety and comfort are way more important than a cute meeting in the hospital. Obviously that's hard to say though! If I were you I would probably tell them that trying to sneak around the rules and worrying about getting caught would stress me out, and I'd rather just play by the rules. If they do it anyway, I would ask one of the nurses to play the bad guy and send your nephew out.

@looch: because babies don't get immunizations until 2mos, if they get a fever, it's an automatic spinal tap to see if they have meningitIs or something....

I would definitely put my foot down about this. But if your nephew ends up visiting, tell him that he can't touch the babies anyway and give him a mask to wear?

Interesting, I wasn't aware that spinal taps were standard procedure for fevers for babies before the first round of immunizations.
With that info, I'd have to agree with Andrea, put your foot down and ask the nurses to be your first line of defense.

I would just tell your brother that you don't want your twins to have contact with other kiddos until they're older. He should understand!

Personally I think his nephew should be able to see the baby at least when you get home, I think you wanting him to wait 2 months to see the baby is a bit much. Think of it this way if you had a child that age and you had another baby would you separate them for two months?

Tell him your hospital's really strict (if it's the same one as your SIL's sister, then say they've recently gotten a lot stricter) and proceed with spinal tap examples!
End it with saying how they're now double-checking (like @MsMini mentioned) to avoid any complications.
It's a white lie, but it obviously happens so ...

@Mrsbells: they let actual siblings in. which is why my bro wants me to lie and say he's my son. even though he looks like my bro and SIL lol.

@tequiero21: Since it requires an action on your part (lying that he's your son), just tell the nurses that you don't have any other kids, and if someone shows up with "your son", they're lying.
And tell your brother that you're not going to lie because your chart indicates this is your first baby. If he pushes, just shorten your response to "no".
