Tiger parenting is often referred to in a negative way... as in, the parents screamed at the kids for getting an A-.
I tend to think of it more in a positive way: where the parents encourage their kids to learn and to fulfill their potential.
How do you define tiger parenting? Do you think of it as good or bad?

Before I read Amy Chua, I thought like you did. Now I think of it more as bullying the child or belitting the child... but I'm not convinced that my new definition is right either.

Encouraging your kids to learn and fulfill their potential should just be called "parenting" =P

I believe most people think about tiger parenting as something negative? Overly demanding, unrealistic expectations, disregard for the child's own interests/desires/feelings etc.

I'd define it more as using techniques like belittling, humiliation, guilt, sometimes even physical consequences. I had a tiger mom (or tiger stepmom), and encouragement/fulfilling my potential wasn't part of it at all! It was more about molding me to fit her ideal and ignoring what I was really good at, and lots and lots of screaming.

Aside from the Chua article which brings up the dark side, I don't think it's always like that...or is it?
I could see a positive take on Tiger Mom as doing whatever it takes to make sure your kid has an advantageous environment to learn and thrive. But maybe we need to invent another name for that ...like ZebraMom.
